Burning Question: Who Today Supports Marijuana Prohibition?

The No. 1 question submitted to NORML’s popular Web page: Who today supports marijuana prohibition? Answer: No single individual within the US government bureaucracy or any private entity is responsible for America’s misguided war on marijuana. Rather, it’s a complicated, well-funded and self-interested anti-cannabis cabal.

To make a long story short, those who most strongly support and benefit from the status quo (and in many instances seek to enhance it) include:

�Federal and state government bureaucracies that are nearly wholly dependent on cannabis prohibition, namely the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the many anti-marijuana divisions within the national-security apparatus, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Department of Justice (DOJ), Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), US Customs, the Department of State (DOS), the Department of Defense (DOD), the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

�Law-enforcement personnel—from local sheriffs to the US Attorney General—who aggressively lobby against marijuana-law reform, both as employees of the government and as private citizens. On the other side, NORML has been working with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (leap.cc), helping them to persuade their strongly prohibitionist-leaning brethren, both active and retired, to speak out for needed marijuana-law reforms.

�Industries that benefit from and actively support cannabis prohibition, including alcohol and tobacco companies; the pharmaceuticals industry; the health-care, life-insurance and drug-test industries; and defense contractors who lobby for expensive high-tech marijuana-law-enforcement budgets to fight the War on Drugs.

�Government-funded so-called “parents’ groups” and other front groups against marijuana and marijuana- law reform, including National Families in Action, (nationalfamilies.org), Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (cadca.org) and the Drug Czar’s Free Vibe (freevibe.com).

�Government-funded so-called “education” propaganda campaigns, such as the Partnership for a Drug Free America and the Drug Awareness and Resistance Education (DARE) program.

�Uninformed, biased and/or grandstanding politicians seeking headlines, re-election, lobbyists’ dollars or protection for government spending programs.

�Currently, according to polling done by NORML, only about 20 percent of the US population is strongly and/or morally opposed to marijuana use and will not in any way support any substantive reforms in marijuana laws.

Daunting as all this opposition may seem, marijuana laws clearly need serious and immediate reform, and in time reason, science, adherence to the US Constitution, free-market principles and good policymaking will lead the way out from the darkness of nearly 70 years of prohibition. One of the most important and difficult endeavors for groups like NORML involves encouraging stakeholders in policy change (i.e., HIGH TIMES readers!) to get involved in their own liberation. I believe that weed should be legal because the establishment should'nt be allowed to legislate or control what I do with my body. Next they'll be telling us whether or not we can pierce or tatoo ourselves, or what we can and can't eat. The prohibition of marijuana was brought to us by the same stubborn conservative minds as the cuban embargo. Neither really helps anyone.

Why don't more people speak out for legalization and hold protests? I love tokin up and I do all the time so dont assume I'm an enemy. All that I'm saying is that if we want something done about this war then we have to stand up together and give ourselves a voice.

It's not about fighting to get high. It's about fighting for your freedoms. Cannabis is a plant since the beginning of existence. It's not a drug. It's the perfect plant created by the creator with many valuable uses. It can be used to create fuel, food, medicine, rope, clothing, etc. Take a look at www.jackherer.com, and www.norml.org. This is a serious issue. We have over 500,000 people a year dying from deaths related to cigarettes and alcohol. In over all it's years of use, there is not ONE SINGLE death related to or caused by Marijuana alone. dank makes an interesting point. Perhaps we should initially regulate it much like alcohol and make necessary adjustments according to true science. For example, I used to work in a factory and the best forklift drivers were the ones that were always smoking. I think it helps some people get into what they are doing.

This dilemna is simple, legalize marijauna. The only conflict is how to manage it. The problem is not legality but regulation. Like tobacco, put a limit on age between 16-18. Also regulation on what you can or can't do while under the influence, and where or not you can smoke or use. There are only positive outcomes in the future. If we are responsible there can be no negative fall out. We have gone as far towards the negative as possible, all that's left is legalization and the true actualization of a beautiful thing. And when it's all over...salute the dutch.

based on what I can see the American government has a point in desiring to crack down on the slime of the earth. Like my friend said, things are way better here. Pot heads are usually cool and respectable people, representing the entire spectrum, cross-section of our culture. I have dozens of friends that are in all types of responsible positions here in canada and when weed is sanctioned this far, so too does the negative culture around it vanish.. It is my opinion, as the article made me feel, that the entire "drug" problem is fabricated for monitary gain. I know that when weed is accepted in a micro-culture, then the negatives vanish. It is my opinion that, while Mary is a drug as is coffee etc, when used as a social tool in the manner of wine and beer by responsible persons then the whole idea about it being bad in society falls flat on its face. Everyone that has ever tried it knows that and I do agree with my canadian friend twin, don't know her personaly, Canada is special. Chief Justice John Marshall, a strong federalist, set the patterns for supremacy of federal government when he interpereted the "elastic Clause" (Article I, section 8, Clause 18)of implied powers. This is one ABUSE we the people must CORRECT. The Constitution states the limits and reconfirms it in the Bill of Rights (Ariticle IX and X). Realizing there would be abuses a protection against it was added (ArticleVI, clause 2).
