NORMLIZER - DECEMBER 2006

Silly Rabids: Drug Warriors’ rage against marijuana blinds them to the growing meth epidemic.

It’s hard to imagine, especially from a pharmacological point of view, why everyone doesn’t recognize that methamphetamine abuse is a major concern in our country. Yet oddly, our Drug Czar, John Walters, head of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), still refuses to concentrate his publicly reported annual budget of nearly $15 billion on meth—instead choosing to continue the government’s breathless, hysterical and now 69-year-old national Reefer Madness campaign.

On another of his now-infamous antidrug junkets, this time in Oregon, which according to government and arrest data has higher-than-average meth abuse, Walters was asked by a reporter from the Oregonian why he has concentrated on pot, not meth, during his five-year tenure. Walters responded by noting that marijuana remains the most widely used illicit drug, branding public officials who identify meth as the bigger crime problem “short-sighted” and claiming that most meth users he meets at rehab centers say they started with pot.

“People don’t want to hear about that epidemic,” Walters said. “They don’t want to hear that BC Bud and high-potency marijuana are coming into our country. We’ve got more kids dependent on marijuana than all other illegal drugs combined. There is a kind of blind spot here that I think has to be confronted: ‘Marijuana is okay. It’s all the other hard drugs that are bad.’ That’s silly.”

Clatsop County District Attorney Josh Marquis, however, quickly and plainly disagreed, reminding the same press junket that “methamphetamine is directly associated with violent and psychotic behavior. Marijuana is not.”

Walters later shrugged off local reporters’ and columnists’ suggestions that his timely visit to Oregon was part of the ONDCP’s barely veiled efforts to blunt local marijuana-law-reform efforts nationwide—specifically, in this case, a well-funded effort called Citizens for a Safer Portland, which is trying to make marijuana the lowest police priority in that city.

A few days after Walters’s propaganda visit to Oregon, Drug Czarina-in-waiting Mary Ann Solberg, the ONDCP’s deputy director, was enlisted for one of her many taxpayer-funded antimarijuana public-relations efforts, this time to obliquely oppose the SAFER campaign’s efforts in Colorado to remove all penalties and fines for possession of up to one ounce of marijuana. Spouting off in the Christian Right’s Focus on the Family daily newsletter (based in Colorado Springs, CO), Solberg wrote that marijuana “is not a benign drug, but a serious drug with consequences. To legalize something for recreational purposes, that we have documented does health harm to people, seems silly.”

“Silly.” Hmmm. Seems to me like that’s the exact same way we treat alcohol. But at least the ONDCP stayed on message.

Awh man I wish you were here. Got some bubba kush and it taste so good, way better than beer.
I suggest we leave the USA and form GANJA ISLAND! you can not change the minds of those who think marijuana is bad. Nixon had a message for the hippies and it speaks loud that you will never be a friend to any pollitical system. If you only knew how bad it was people!

IM A REGULAR ON THE DRUG TEST FORUM HERE AT HIGH TIMES, WE ALL NEED TO BAND TOGETHER AND CHANGE THE MISGUIDED OPINION OF MARIJUANA SMOKERS, START HERE FIRST PEOPLE, IVE BEEN HELPING A CRAP LOAD OF PEOPLE PASS THEIR DRUG TEST, IF WE CAN BECOME ACTIVE, CONTRIBUTING, RESPECTABLE MEMBERS OF OUR COMMUNITY, THEN WE CAN TURN THIS TIDE, ALL DRUGS SHOULD NOT BE LEGAL, CERTAINLY NOT METH, REMEMBER GOD GAVE US ALL SEED BEARING GREEN HERBS FOR OUR USE, THE BIBLE DOESNT SAY EXCEPT MARIJUANA,
i RECENTLY PASSED A DRUG TEST AFTER ONLY 7 DAYS CLEAN, WITH NO GIMMIC PRODUCT, JUST PLAIN COMMON SENSE, IM A RESPONSIBLE PROFESSIONAL INDIVIDUAL AND MARIJUANA IN NO WAY EFFECTS ME HARMFULLY OR ANYONE AROUND ME, ITS NOT MORALLY WRONG, SO WHATS THE BIG DEAL, FEEL IF WE COULD STAND UP TOGETHER, EACH AND EVERYONE, THAT THE STAGGERING NUMBER OF SUPPORTERS WOULD TURN THE PUBLIC OPINION, AND WE WOULD LIKELY SEE THAT WE ARE THE MAJORITY, BUT WHY ARE WE SO SILENT? ARE WE SCARED OF OUR GOD GIVEN BIRTH RIGHT TO FREEDOM? MAYBE WE THINK EVERYONE WILL FORGET ABOUT MORALS IF POT IS LEGALIZED, MAYBE WE WILL BECOME A NATION OF PSYCHO, MURDEROUS ZOMBIES BENT ON DESTRUCTION OF EVERYTHING, THEN AFTER THE LOSS OF OUR MORALS, MAYBE WE WILL LOSE OUR INTELLIGENCE, AND START SHOOTING METH AND SMOKING CRACK IN OUR SCHOOLS, ,AND TO THINK I FIGURED THERE WOULD BE LESS CRIME, MORE ROOM IN JAIL, MORE MONEY FOR THE GOVERNMENT FROM REGULATIONS,INNER PEACE AND A RENEWED SENSE OF PATRIOTISM AND PRIDE, MAN, MAYBE I ALREADY AM A ZOMBIE!

this is one cop...

I am a police officer and pot smokers are the least of my concerns. I have pulled people over who had marijuana and let them go, hell it is'nt even worth the paper work. I have found that people who speed are more of a threat due to the traffic death rates in my county. I even have a friend who smokes pot.

"alcohol is ok. all other drugs are bad." -that's what we're saying right now. Does it make sense, or is it silly too?

If you needed workers in your prisons would you rather deal with Meth Heads, Crack Heads, Murderers, Rapists, Child Molesters, Alcoholics (all you can drink in most federal prisons, homemade wine. The guards actually walk around with breath analyzers. TRUE!) or Peace loving easy going Pot smokers? UNICOR federal prison industries needs workers. Thousands more are needed. About one third of Federal Prison inmates work in UNICOR. MONEY! Nobody wants to join so this is their idea of drafting. There are millions of potential peace loving smokers who fit the profile. This is why minimum mandatory sentences are so important. If you get a ten year sentence they know they have a worker for over 9 years. They actually calculate this shit. Business you know. If you are homeless, fairly old and not getting any anyway then you might consider Federal Prison. Great Food, medical care, nice place to sleep, air conditioning, heating, Cable, Tennis in alot of places, steady job in UNICOR. Yeh, get you a BITCH and try to start a family. Protect your money from pick pockets.

They say legalizing Marijuana is silly and harmful to your health but yet Alcohol and Tobacco are legal yet they kill millions of people annually, don't they see the potential of a natural plant that has over 400 chemicals in it of which a quarter have not even been studied yet??? Thank the lord i dont live in the US, what happened to democracy and voting power, seems the US dont give a damn about it's citizens!!!!

It's not that most these kids are dumb and uneducated wich is the reason why they are doing harder drugs its mostly because of drug testing. I know alot of teens that went to different harder drugs in the wake of getting a new job. Cocaine only has a what 3 day window they can catch you I dont know any meth heads or acid trippers so cant tell you about them.....

Yep. The Feds are all concerned about appearing as though they are waging this noble war against this great evil that naturally grows out of the ground and makes you feel good. The addictive, destructive, and truly harmful drugs are not focused in their war because they are convinced "smoking pot will lead to other, harder drugs." Right. Thats like saying flies cause garbage. Lack of education and knowledge concerning drugs leaves people in a position where they might try harder drugs out of curiosity, because they don't know much about it. It seems to definitely be the case with the younger crowd. I see more kids doing E and smoking meth with each passing year. The Feds themselves, in a predictable turn of hypocrisy, said themselves last year that pot usage amongst high-schoolers was diminishing. Well, guess why? They are choosing harder, more illicit drugs in lieu of pot. Many that I know never touched pot, and went straight to E, meth, acid, and even over-the- counter drug abuse like robitussin and dramamine. The Feds will continue to ignore the facts, facts like pot never made anyone die simply by smoking it. It's not addictive like crack or meth. It doesn't make you psychotic or depraved, and you don't hear of people dying of "marijuana" overdose. Even while it seems some progress is being made in freeing the weed, there are plenty of people in congress still trying to undo it, and further the reefer-madness.
