NORMLIZER - AUGUST 2007
LA hosts the 36th annual NORML conference.

At NORML’s first “People’s Pot Conference,” District of Columbia police promptly arrested a young man who had driven two days straight from Texas to attend the historic event when he attempted to dry his recently harvested, six-foot-tall marijuana plant on the highway-heated hood of his car. Compare his experience with that of NORML conference-goers at last year’s confab in San Francisco, where law enforcement and hotel officials condoned the private use of medical marijuana and vaporizers in “non-smoking” rooms.
This year, for the first time, the conference will be held in Los Angeles. Over the past few years, the Los Angeles area has seen a sharp increase in the number of medical-marijuana dispensaries. Recent DEA raids at these important facilities have put seriously ill medical-marijuana users at risk. Add the inflammatory remarks made by Los Angeles’ chief of police about California’s 10-year-old medical-marijuana laws—juxtaposed with the Hollywood City Council’s decision to make the enforcement of cannabis laws the “lowest police priority”—and you have the ingredients for an interesting political mix for the 36th annual NORML conference.
I cordially invite you to spend your Columbus Day weekend (Oct. 12–13) with NORML, HIGH TIMES and more than 500 like-minded citizens. Space is limited, and our deeply discounted hotel rooms always sell out. No serious-minded cannabis-law reformer or defender of the plant should ever miss the annual NORML conference!
—Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML
