420 CAMPAIGN
Support Federal Decrim in 2008: Contact Congress NOW!
Tue, Mar 25, 2008 9:53 pm
Congressman Barney Frank is set to introduce legislation in the House of Representatives to decriminalize marijuana under federal law, and the focus of this year’s 420 Campaign is to demonstrate public support for this important and historic piece of legislation.
Most marijuana arrests in the United States are based on state laws regarding marijuana’s use and possession, and Congressman Frank’s proposed legislation will not change that. Nonetheless, for several reasons, it is of tremendous importance that this legislation receives the support of every marijuana user in the country.
First of all, this legislation would eliminate all federal penalties for possession of small, personal use, quantities of marijuana. Federal penalties for possession are enforced when marijuana use is observed by law enforcement on federal land, such as in national parks or national forests. Indeed some of the highest arrest rates for marijuana possession in the United States occur in vacation areas; removing criminal penalties for marijuana possession on federal land provides some immediate benefits for marijuana users by eliminating the danger of arrest in the heavily visited areas of the United States.
Decriminalization of marijuana at the federal level is also of great symbolic value. It sends a signal to state governments throughout the country that the federal government believes that marijuana possession should no longer be treated as a criminal offense. Of greater importance, it indicates that the US Congress has reached the political judgment that the public supports significant changes in public policy regarding marijuana and the law.
According to NORML, which has worked with Congressman Frank to develop this legislation, “this proposal would eliminate all federal penalties prohibiting the personal use and possession of up to 100 grams (3 ½ ounces) of marijuana. Under our measure, adults who consume cannabis would no longer face arrest, prison, or even the threat of a civil fine. In addition, this bill eliminates all penalties prohibiting the not-for-profit transfers of up to one ounce of pot.”
Congressional representatives are shrewd politicians. They are always on the lookout for issues that attract people to participate in the political process. Support for Congressman Frank’s decrim bill is an excellent opportunity for other representatives to appreciate the political benefits of using the marijuana issue to attract people of all ages into participating in the political process, and especially young people who, absent issues that directly affect them, might be uninterested in voting and/or supporting candidates for public office. Understand this – regardless of their party and political ideology your congressional representative wants you to like them, wants you to respect them, and wants you to feel like they are being responsive to your interests.
There are several easy ways to contact your congressional representatives. The 420 Campaign provides easy to follow instructions for Contacting your Congressional Representative. You can also use the BCR Guide to State Legislative and Congressional Districts and Maps to lookup and research your elected representatives – in fact, you should encourage the state and federal elected officials who represent you to support decriminalization of marijuana at the federal level. NORML has a Web site devoted to contacting your elected officials. The Marijuana Policy Project also has a Federal Action Center that will help you contact your representatives in Congress.
Contact your congressional representative, tell them you want them to support Congressman Frank’s forthcoming bill to decriminalize marijuana under federal law. Let them know that you favor marijuana’s legalization, but that you think that decrim at the federal level is a sensible policy that is long overdue. And, very important, if you've never contacted them before, let them know this is the first time you’ve written your elected representative.
HIGH TIMES will report more details about this legislation as they become available. But there is no reason to wait for more details to express your support for this effort. Contact your congressional representative right now and express your support for the decriminalization of marijuana under federal law. It’s the best way to support 420 in 2008!

however if industrialization occurs it might possibly save our economy. imagine the wonderful products that come from pot and the buisness it would produce. But god forbid the liberal communists let the working man get ahead! If that happens they might loose power as a new generation of change occurs with the building of wealth from the working man. Legalizing Marijuana
Jan 1 2009, 10:21 am
Cigarettes are legal (Drug) Alcohol is legal (Drug). They are taxed, that’s the reason they are legal, why not legalize Drugs and Tax them. It would cut down on Crimes and Deaths. (Think of all the Money the Government would make).
You Can't Drink Alcohol till your 21, You Can't Smoke till your 18. Put the Same Restirctions on Drugs. Tax it, Make the Government Money!!
Just a thought....

Dear Mr. Gorka,
Thank you for your letter regarding the decriminalization of marijuana.
I believe that drug use is harming our economy, straining our prison system and destroying the lives of our children. Drug use is tragic, but I do not believe that legalizing drugs like marijuana, even for medicinal purposes, is the best answer.
Decriminalizing drugs could make the problem worse. If drugs, like marijuana, are decriminalized, I believe their use would increase and more people would become addicted. To me, law enforcement efforts to decrease the supply of drugs and combat their use are one component of the drug war. We need to strike a better balance between education, enforcement and treatment to reduce drug abuse.
Thank you for taking the time to contact me. For more information on my work in Congress or to send me an electronic message, please visit the 21st District’s website, http://lamarsmith.house.gov.

What the goverment dosent realize how many pot smokers are out there and how they could sell jay's and blunts in gas stations and acually make huge profits off it. Those profits could go toward real crimes like rape and murder as well as support education funding and even help for the reasurch of alternative fuels. Somebody talk some sense into the goverment please!!!!

During alcohol prohibition prison populations sky-rocketed and alcohol went underground.Organized crime and gangs sold alcohol. The same exact thing is happening right now and has been happening four far too long. The idea of putting locking a person up for smoking pot or growing pot in their own home makes me sick.IT'S DEFINITELY TIME FOR A CHANGE.

For example, support Obama IF HE IS FOR the legalization of mary jane.
If a president ever played upon weed in a good way they'll get a great response from the smokers.
Not to mention if they did legalize it, statistically speaking, the nations debt would be diminished and we can get health care for all

However, I also have some actual responces addressing my cannabis issues(rare).
You know as well as I that unfortunatly, we are still in the minority here. Most cannabis consumers are to scared, apathetic, or for whatever reason, unwilling to take action.
When our elected servants get letters by the million(s), then and only then will they begin to hear us.
Thanks for your tenacity, keep up the good work.

Don’t laugh or mock it, just do it!
EVERYBODY who lights up, EVERYBODY who is tired of the gov’t putting their guns in our faces and taking our lives needs to participate!
EVERBODY!
On 4-20-08 we start mailing and we keep mailing until they acquiesce!
It’s not expensive, if we can afford the smoke, we can afford the nuts!
Why wait for the puppets at HT or NORML and the host of others who fight more for our money than our cause? Remember last years TV show, Jericho, which was canceled? The fans got it renewed by bombarding those who canceled it with peanuts, after the last line of the last show. What if we mailed millions of bags of peanuts to the white house? Lets freak out some politicians! It’s peaceful, it’s legal and there is not a damn thing they can do about it or, once started, stop, without ending prohibition first! Isn’t it time we did something besides acquiesces to their rules and play the voting game sham?
The rules:
1) Make the 'return' address the same as the 'send to' address. This forces them to deliver because they can't return the package to it's origin. If the white house refuses to accept the peanuts, the post office must contend with it. Which means the white house has to deal with it anyway.
2) Make the package half a pound, no more than one pound. We want lots of packages, not one big one!
3) Write in big letters 'END MJ PROHIBITION!' on the package.
4) Use ONLY the US postal service. Bringing the postal system to a grinding halt will help make the point! No point punishing UPS and the like.
5) Spread this around! Get everyone involved!
6) Ignore any protests of how terrorists can make use of it. Politicians have been ignoring us without concern for our safety. If they force us to live in fear, them let them join us at the table and share in the meal they prepared!
It has
