The HIGH TIMES 420 Campaign – 420 Your Friends to Support Federal Decrim

Thu, Aug 07, 2008 5:57 pm

The United States House of Representatives is now considering legislation to decriminalize possession and non-profit transfers of marijuana under federal law.

If passed, while not affecting state laws regarding marijuana, this would be important progress toward marijuana’s eventual legalization in the United States.

Federal decriminalization would acknowledge that the current policy of prohibition is unworkable and unsustainable, and would indicate to state governments throughout the nation that new policies must be developed.

It’s time to 420 your friends to encourage them to contact Congress and indicate their enthusiastic support for this legislation, technically referred to as H.R. 5843.

What do we mean by “420 your friends?”  It’s simple, and yet it’s the most revolutionary act you can take to advance the cause of legalization. Contact four of your friends, persuade them to contact Congress and indicate their support for H.R. 5843, and then have each of them contact four of their friends and get them to do the same. Reach out to four friends, and 20 friends contact Congress. (Do the math, you contact four people, each of them contacts four people, that’s five people contacting four people each… 20 in all.)  420 your friends, and you set off a chain reaction. Master this simple process, and use it when necessary to advance marijuana’s legalization.

This legislation is important. The title of H.R. 5843 is “To eliminate most Federal penalties for possession of marijuana for personal use, and for other purposes.” It was introduced by Congressman Barney Frank from the 4th District of Massachusetts. The co-sponsors are Rep. Tammy Baldwin (WI-2), Rep. Earl Blumenauer (OR-3), Rep. William Lacy Clay (MO-1), Rep. Barbara Lee (CA-9), Rep. Jim McDermott (WA-7), and Rep. Ron Paul (TX-14).

Here is the text of the bill:

“Notwithstanding any other provision of law, no penalty may be imposed under an Act of Congress for the possession of marijuana for personal use, or for the not-for-profit transfer between adults of marijuana for personal use. For the purposes of this section, possession of 100 grams or less of marijuana shall be presumed to be for personal use, as shall the not-for-profit transfer of one ounce or less of marijuana, except that the civil penalty provided in section 405 of the Controlled Substances Act (21 U.S.C. 844a) may be imposed for the public use of marijuana if the amount of the penalty does not exceed $100.”

You can identify and contact your congressional representative by going to the website for the House of Representatives. Enter your zip code in the search engine in the upper left corner of the home page to locate your congressional representative. Send them a simple message: “I want you to support H.R. 5843 to decriminalize marijuana possession under federal law.” It’s as simple as that. You can send them a more detailed message if you’d like, such as explaining why you believe this is good policy for our country, and why you support marijuana law reform. You can ask your representative to explain where they stand on this issue and why. But whether your Congressional Representative supports or opposes this bill, it is important for them to hear from you and know that you want them to support H.R. 5843.

Use the Thomas website of the Library of Congress to monitor the progress of H.R. 5843.  The bill has currently been referred to the House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security.

The best way to get the subcommittee to take action on the bill is to let members of Congress know that there is public support for this action. That is why you need to 420 your friends and encourage them to express their support to the Congress about this important legislation. And, while you’re at it, let your friends know about The HIGH TIMES 420 Campaign, where they can locate important background on national efforts to legalize marijuana and updates on important developments such as H.R. 5843.

National reform organizations such as the Drug Policy Alliance, the Marijuana Policy Project, and NORML are working hard to provide support and publicity for H.R. 5843. Each of their websites has more information about this important piece of legislation and their efforts to promote it. These groups also provide additional options and assistance for you to contact your representative. The 420 Campaign also provides a primer on contacting Congress.

Contact your congressional representative. It’s easy, and once you’ve done it yourself you can let your friends know how easy it actually is. 420 your friends now. Tell them about H.R. 5843. Send them the link for this column, or send them a copy. Encourage them to contact their congressional representative, and then get them to contact four of their friends and get them to do the same. 420 your friends. It’s simple, it’s easy, and it’s revolutionary. 420 your friends and advance the cause of marijuana’s legalization in the United States.

i think smokers and non smoking suporters in evry state should start a twice a month rally to protest the bullshit pot laws. no govrnment agency would be able to stop it and they would have to change something. we should all take wade's idea one step farther, evry time you get a bag within your regions growng season throw them out side instead of once a year. sure some cop will prolly find it and destroy it but as soon as they do more will start poping up.

Let the same laws and fines and several more, apply to legalized marijuana as is alcohol and cigarettes, it would generate money and jobs overnight. If grown at home for personal or elsewhere as a business, permits, licsence and taxes apply, jobs driving around each month like water, gas & electric co. who go around measuring usage of utilities, if you have more plants growing than you paid permit for, you get fined,a traffic or public law is violated and you have marijuana in possession, fine them as alcohol, personal use must have permit, there would be places designated by law to enable smoking, smoke where prohibited and be fined again, everything can help everyone, an irresponsible person can drink water and they are still irresponsible, it could save a nation, just my thoughts.

Well i don't know if it should be legal or not. I know that if everyone smokes pot atleast when working the country will go down hill. At the same time nobody tells me what to do so im gonna smoke pot illegal or not. But Wade H has a funny idea whether it will work or not. Either way i guess ill save my seeds till 420 and plant them in the everglades

The legalization of marijuana is imperative because it will benefit each in every American Citizen in one way or another. It is a cash crop, like tobacco...or corn. Regulation has always proven more effective than prohibition. If legalized, thousands will be needed to maintain the BOOM in demand. Closet smokers will finally be freed of their tombs and their wallets will open up like flood gates. In turn, manpower will be needed to grow and cultivate enough yield to meet the demand. Billions in tax dollars will be generated and the rest is basic economics. Yes, Dude, I agree, some people are just stupid. But, we can't make them wear a sign and so long as they can get their hands and brains on alcohol, xanex, oxycontin, prozac, dilaudid, etc., they're gonna do stupid shit. But, for those of us who participate responsibly, it's no different than a cigarette after great sex, or a cold beer during the Super Bowl. It's as American as apple pie and we should be able to partake without fear.

I don't know if anyboy but me realizes this but..If marijuana becomes legal..That could be the worst thing for this country..Cause then a shit load of people would be technically laid-off, fired or whatever the fact..People who sell this shit(we'll cal them dealers)will be out of business and jobs are getting harder to find and the dealers would eventually start selling harder drugs like crack, ac!d, heroin and all that shit meaning more worse drugs.. And the illegal part is whats fun for teens..And some people will wanna try it cause its legal now and alot of people we know shouldn't smoke this shit cause it can make them pretty stupid but thats a selected few(myself in a way)Now I'm not just against this there are reasons why it should and needs to be legal but to me an like all my friends are pretty glad its illegal and glad were also helping dealers out with there job.. which pays pretty damn good..but my name is Trevor. and I thought someon would bring this up..to me..I don't care weither its legal illegal or makes me a terrorist.. Getting high makes the boring. not so boring..

i am tring to spread the word as well for everyone to save there seeds and for all of us to take a stand together on april 20 2009 and go into the woods and plant them,or just scatter them along creek beds or river bends on the high sides.I firmly belive it is every beings right to use cannabis, i also belive if it is growing all over the place it would do no good to have it illegal anymore.I really think this could work if we all come together for the greater good of mankind. On 4-20-2009 lets all plant some seeds.By the way cannabis could clean the earth of our carbon dioxide problrm which would help with global warming.Anyways it cant hurt or cause any.God bless all

I was able to contact my Congressman Peter DeFazio, Oregon. Our laws are fair now, medically, but there still needs to be Federal changes.
