A Different Kind of Tea Party
Marijuana consumers present a $14 billion dollar check to the US Treasury to represent "tax and regulate" boost to economy from legalizing cannabis.

What would America’s 25 million regular marijuana consumers do with $14 billion? How about pay taxes – gladly.
That’s the message the Executive Director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) delivered on tax day, April 15, during a press conference on the steps of the General Post Office in Midtown Manhattan, along with an oversized $14 billion check made out to the US Treasury Department.
The check total is a conservative estimate of what American taxpayers spend every year to maintain marijuana prohibition. According to the report "The Budgetary Implications of Marijuana Prohibition in the United States," Americans spend some $6 billion annually on marijuana-related law enforcement. Taxing and regulating the production and sale of cannabis like alcohol products would eliminate these costs, while raising an additional $8 billion in new tax revenue each year, according to the report, which was endorsed by Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman and over 500 other accredited economists.
Supporters of a “tax and regulate” approach to marijuana gathered at the General Post Office (441 Eighth Ave) at 4:20 PM to formally present the check.
"On a day when so many Americans lament having to pay state and federal income taxes, we're representing America's millions of otherwise law-abiding cannabis consumers, who're ready, willing, and able to contribute this huge sum to our struggling economy, while providing truly 'green' jobs and allowing police to focus on more important priorities. All we ask in exchange for our $14 billion is the right to enjoy pot responsibly and in peace.” – Allen St. Pierre, NORML's National Director
“I would like to ask all Americans to stop for a moment on tax day and ask themselves if this $14 billion could be better spent than on an endless, pointless, counterproductive ‘war’ against a largely harmless plant. We’re eager to start a rational, reasonable debate about changing the marijuana laws, because that’s a debate we know we’ll win.” – David Bienenstock, author of “The Official High Times Pot Smoker’s Handbook”
“Marijuana is unquestionably America's number one cash crop. At a time when millions of Americans are out of work, we need to legitimize this multi-billion dollar per year industry and help families get back on their feet, instead of arresting over 800,000 of our own citizens every year for possessing a plant far less harmful than alcohol.” – Danny Danko, Senior Cultivation Editor, High Times Magazine

$750-$1,000 tax stamp per plant!
And today you're averaging 4 oz per plant indoors? I plan on averaging 5 lbs per plant, outdoors. So, leave the stamps, I can manage that.

We can already see that isnt workin.RE: 1937 marijuana tax Act. Taxin is destroyin!
NUMBER: 1798
AUTHOR: Daniel Webster (1782–1852)
QUOTATION: The power to tax is the power to destroy.
ATTRIBUTION: This quotation comes from the words of DANIEL WEBSTER and those of JOHN MARSHALL in the Supreme Court case, McCulloch v. Maryland.
Webster, in arguing the case, said: “An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy,” 17 U.S. 327 (1819).
In his decision, Chief Justice Marshall said: “That the power of taxing it [the bank] by the States may be exercised so as to destroy it, is too obvious to be denied” (p. 427), and “That the power to tax involves the power to destroy … [is] not to be denied” (p. 431)

Your Right of Defense Against Unlawful Arrest
“Citizens may resist unlawful arrest to the point of taking an arresting officer's life if necessary.” Plummer v. State, 136 Ind. 306. This premise was upheld by the Supreme Court of the United States in the case: John Bad Elk v. U.S., 177 U.S. 529. The Court stated: “Where the officer is killed in the course of the disorder which naturally accompanies an attempted arrest that is resisted, the law looks with very different eyes upon the transaction, when the officer had the right to make the arrest, from what it does if the officer had no right. What may be murder in the first case might be nothing more than manslaughter in the other, or the facts might show that no offense had been committed.”
It seems dc wants us all to blow each other away.
Killing is wrong assholes.

Intellectual Stoner
Apr 22 2009, 12:42 am
Amen to Finny. That is all I can say about that. I understand your frustration man, but keep in mind that your language minimizes how other intellectuals view your opinion; not that I personaly care, language is language to me.
I get what the fake 14 billion doller check represents, although it seems to have confused the majority of these bloggers. It is a representation of what the government would save each year, by not pursuing a war on drugs toward a drug that causes nothing more than a pleasent aroma, delayed cognitive function, and oh my, you may get the munchies. This figurative 14 billion isn't even considering the money the government could make when it taxes legal marijuana sales, because you know they are going too (that and air eventually, once they figure out the right "bill" to propose for that). For the people that posted comments suggesting that the marijauna advocates stop "messing around" and write the government a real check for that sum, to present toward the legalization of marijauna I say this to you. Let us take a moment to reflect on that thought process. First of all, I don't know about everyone else, but in my mind, it sounds like that would constatute as a bribe, not a good first step toward an obviously very touchy subject. Secondly let us ponder the funding it would require to amass 14 billion. Fellow stoners remember, that is a 14 with 9, count them 9 zeros behind it.
Dont get me started on the possible health concerns, because personaly I believe there has not been enough research on the subject to warrant any significant health related problems, and how could there be, when we are talking about researching a substance that is illigle. Mind you everyone, the government is so worried about the health of its citizens... But that same government allows cigerettes, with who knows what added to them, and for what reasons (how does fiber glass enhance tabacco?), alcohol, which is correct me if I am wrong, one of the leading causes of death in our country every year, and lets not forget about fast food chains, which are what, one of the suggested leading causes of obesity in America today, and one of the suggested top reasons for the growing numbers of childhood obesity.
I guess I can at least consider the governments position on the subject. How do you legalize a substance that has been made illegal for centuries without the fear of people lobbying for the legalization of other illegal actions or substances. Mind you again though, we are not asking for the legalization of coke, crack, heroine, or other extreme narcotics... I think we can all agree, marijuana supporters and non-supporters, that the US would not benefit from becoming an Amsterdamian haven.
I say this though, wasn't gambling, in any of our states once illegal? Does anyone remember the prohibition era on alcohol? Will the people who govern our country learn nothing from the mistakes of the past?
In closing I apologize for the length of my comment, and for those grammer hounds out there, for any mispelled words, or improper grammer/sentence/punctuation structure. I do not smoke cigarettes, cus they are bad for my health, and wallet, I drink only on the rare occasion that I go out, but never to excess. I start with a shot of Henny followed by 2-3 beers max. But Mary J., ahh, sweet Mary J. She is my night cap, the sweet nectar that awaits the end of my day. After I work a full days work, and attend to my family and children, yes, I have children, I enjoy a nice fat blunt at the end of my day, after the kids are to bed and no longer at play.
Pot smokers, there are some of you out there that are making the rest of us look unintelligent, lazy, and downright bad. Please stop, I would one day like to be able to enjoy my evening smoke, without the fear of being arrested and going to jail for it.

Apr 21 2009, 1:23 pm
We need to grow and sell weed to pay the taxes we already face. Property Tax, License Renewal Tax, Vehicle Registration, and Inspection tax, Gasoline Tax, Phone Tax, Internet Tax, Sales tax, prepared food tax, Interstate Tolls, plus many other taxes.
Taxes suck!!!
Apr 21 2009, 1:18 pm
This is a reply seen below.
War on some drugs is horrible and people are suffering because of it. This does not mean we should justify something with taxes.
For one the land the weed is grown is taxed, The Electricity is taxed, In some cases the water usage is taxed. So with these taxes already in place why pay another tax for what you are growing using the already taxed land, electricity and water. P{lus the phone calls you will recieve from potential buyers. you pay a tax on that phone line too. Seems to me the government has too many hands out.
When is the last time you heard of a tax being repealed or lowered?

When warmongers lead the people, people suffer and die.
When will it end? Is there any hope of decency returning to the states? Will anyone have any sympathy for us as a nation if we are ever in need of any kind of help from Countries outside the states? Or will we be spit on, and set on fire and dragged around? If we do not show compasion for ALL people as a nation, then what happens when the karmic bubble bursts?

First, if weed were legal not only would the DRUG LAW CREATED CRIME at the Mexican border cease. The price of weed would drop. There would be enough annual savings now wasted on weed prohibition. To prevent the need for a weed tax. And lets not forget sales tax on vaporizers, bongs, etc., would amount to a hell of alot of revenue. Without having the government meddeling in our weed affairs any longer. That is the essence of FREEDOM.
That said. I am flattered that you were so hitting on me. But I am married.
There should be a few spelling errors in there for you to complain about.

First of there is a reason weed cost $45 an eighth, $280 an ounce or w.e. prices are in your local area...beacuse its illegal
even if it was taxed pices would go down to the actaul value of cannabis and the plant it self.
At a tax of 550 an ounce the most likley retail price would stand at $80 and ounce which is $100 cheaper than prices now.

I know it sounded weird the way I worded it, it's hard for me to explain.
I'm pretty sure that people would have no problem with paying a reasonable amount more for legal weed, rather than paying less and risk getting arrested. And without their main product, lots of organized drug syndicates would collapse.
Btw you spelled existent wrong. Ben Franklin lived in a completely different world than the one we live in now.

Pay more for weed to be safe?
What kind of warped logic is that? The danger is caused by prohibition.
Legalize and the border violence becomes almost non-existint. No need for taxes to stop that. Just a change in the law would accomplish that.
Ben Franklin warrned about trading liberty for safety.

You ask what we are to do when poopie shit is the more affordable weed to purchase then say the higher quality bud.
Well, I would have to say that is some quandry you thought of, if perhaps this weren't already a case in the black market!
Lower grade weed will without a doubt be less expensive. Higher grade weed will without a doubt be more expensive. If you want better bud, you pay more. This is similar to the alcohol industry. Sky Vodka costs more than a bottle of Vladimir Vodka for obvious reasons. If you want better vodka, you have to pay more. If you want better quality anything in our society, YOU GENERALLY PAY MORE!
If you would like to know more, just ask around.

The mental stress you refer to is not always exacerbated by marijuana use. At least the stress is not maximized to a point of say, psychotic tendencies or schizophrenia . The people with the likelyhood of this happening, should already be under some kind of treatment, unrelated to marijuana use.
Besides the point, i think the actually percentage of americans with clinical schizophrenia is about 1 percent. Fear mongering is supposed to be a prohibitionists tactic. So, are you truly an activist or are you a narc? I smell bacon and its on your fat doughnut munching ass.

Funny me. I thouhjt it was about freedom.
ya everyone knows that there will be a tax if/when legalized(even me). But to allow the government to determine how much the tax will be is insane.( we will need a consent of the goverened clause before any tax increases be imposed) Take the $50.00 per OZ tax proposed in a California bill.
Thats way to much. Anything above $1.00 per gram or $20.00 an OZ when purchasing an OZ. Is acceptable, but is still to much. In my opinion.

You say you want a revolution? You can count me out. Taxes pay for plenty of important things like postal service, roads and schools. Just because you don't agree with everything they're used for, doesn't mean they're inherently wrong. Legal and taxed pot would be a huge step in the right direction for all of us who have been oppressed. You'll come around eventually. Until then, don't say we didn't try.
