Story and Photos by Dan Skye

On Sunday, April 25, approximately 600 friends and family of Jack Herer gathered at Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills, CA to pay tribute to the legendary marijuana activist. Jack, who died on April 15th, was responsible for igniting the modern cannabis movement, convincing millions of people worldwide of the benefits of the plant.

Four designated speakers eulogized him: Kentucky activist/attorney and gubernatorial candidate Gatewood Galbraith, HIGH TIMES Executive Editor Dan Skye, activist and author Chris Conrad, and Jack’s mentor in the campaign for cannabis in all its form, J.J. Greenfields. Jack’s son Dan gave the formal eulogy and emphasized what a remarkable father Jack had been. Poster-sized photographs of Jack decorated the chapel. Later at the graveside ceremony, the congregation gathered for more expressions of respect for the great man. An OM circle was conducted at 4:20. Fittingly, buds and joints were thrown into the gravesite.

Jack Herer is widely considered to be one of the great thinkers of the past 50 years, a man whose zeal for revealing the truth behind this miraculous plant paved the way for the new era of cannabis freedom on the horizon. Jack’s final medical expenses and the costs of his memorial site are considerable. Please go to www.jackherermedicalandmemorialfund.org and help ease the burden. Pay Pal accepted.

Jack gave his all for the plant. Now it’s time to give back!

The Jack Herer Memorial site will be open for visiting in Fall 2010.

Jack will be missed. my whole life I have dreamed to meet the legend
since I was old enough to know who he was and what he stood for
he stood as an icon for a way of life We could have only dreamed of living.
Now it is up to us to do his will. He layed the first brick now we must build the monument
we can not let his cause be in vain. Today I found out my idol had passed.
My only regret is that he never passed to me.

R.I.P JACK
4/20 will forever be Jack herrer day to me.

how absolutely rude! and very dissapointing the lack of respect for one of the few great men we have been lucky enough to experience. And if your mother had taught u right u should have just kept ur mouth shut. Next time keep ur opinion to yourself or learn some respect.

My son was born, 25 years ago, with a partial cleft palate, I blamed my husbands previous drug use - he is a Vietnam Vetc and his stories and my limited education on Marijuana confirmed it. 15 years ago I received a message from God, telling me that Marijuana would benefit me more than the Psychiatric drugs the doctors were prescribing - of course I had to check it out on the Internet (sorry God) and the first reference I came across was Jack Herer and his book 'The Emperor wears no clothes', from this beginning I followed up on other writers/researchers etc, and realised God was right - Cannabis is a healer - for the people and the planet. Thank you God for the life of Jack Herer - he made my life worth living.

The man was an inspiration. Before I was originally introduced to this plant I was completely against marijuana. What this man did for the country to open our eyes to how great this plant truly is will never be forgotten. Fly High Jack, I thank you for all you did.

I had the privledge of smoking and taking with Jack on several occassions. I met him the night before he had his original stroke and I was there when he had it the next day. I was with Jack to smoke and talk again after his stroke and Jack will always be with us through his teachings and through everything he has done for us and for the plant. He was truely a remarkable man and I will remember him for the rest of my life. NOBODY loved cannabis more then Jack. RIP Jack Herer.

I'm 27 now and I have heard people talking about the Great Late Jack since my birth I always wanted to meet the Man I guess I never can now, but at least we can keep unravelling the mysteries of this wonderful plant together that he has spent a large portion of his earthly life to help us understand and appreciate.

It was one of the greatest honors of my career to be asked to participate in his memorial service. I'm left with a treasure trove of Jack photos and incredible memories. The rabbii at the service gave a thoughtful opening address: "We wait too lomg to tell someone how we feel"; "We wait too long to show love"; "We wait too long to change ourselves." And so on...
Let's not wait too long...
