Cannabis Column – #46
Ten Reasons People Use Marijuana
Fri, May 16, 2008 2:12 pm

Jon Gettman is a long time contributor to HIGH TIMES. A former National Director of NORML, Jon has a Ph.D. in public policy and regional economic development and consults with attorneys, advocates, and non-profits on cannabis related research and public policy issues. On October 8, 2002, along with a coalition of organizations, he filed a new petition to have cannabis rescheduled under federal law. This column will track that petition's progress.
Ten Reasons People Use Marijuana
Why do people use marijuana?
According to the federal government’s Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) “marijuana is the most commonly used illicit drug.” ONDCP further explains that the “short-term effects of marijuana use include problems with memory and learning, distorted perception, difficulty in thinking and problem solving, loss of coordination, increased heart rate, and anxiety.”
Anyone unfamiliar with marijuana or marijuana users would find these remarks interesting. Why, given this description of its effects, is marijuana use so common, so popular? One might get the impression that marijuana users are a bunch of idiots to use such a drug, and that is, indeed, the impression that ONDCP intends to communicate. The premise of this description is that since marijuana causes undesired effects, the reasons people use it are that a) they are idiot thrill seekers and b) the drug must be addictive. After all, if it wasn’t addictive why would people take such a drug if it caused them to be so impaired?
One of the greatest misunderstandings about marijuana is confusing its acute short-term effects for its chronic long-term effect. That’s clinical terminology. It means that some of the reactions people get when they first experience marijuana create false impressions. Many of the initial reactions people have to marijuana change once they become more familiar with its effects. Many scientists have documented how marijuana’s effects on individuals changes with familiarity, and how many of the short term effects described by ONDCP no longer occur during subsequent usage.
The reason people use marijuana, though, is not because of the short-term effects described by ONDCP. People use marijuana because they find its effects likable, useful, and safe.
1) People use marijuana for relaxation. They find it a pleasant alternative to alcohol that enhances their ability to relax at the end of the day, or at other times. It has a calming effect, and marijuana often provides mental stimulation that distracts people from the vexing problems they’ve wrestled with at work, school, or even in their personal relationships.
2) People use marijuana because it enhances their appetite for food. Marijuana makes eating more enjoyable. It stimulates hunger, and it stimulates taste and digestion.
3) People use marijuana because it enhances their enjoyment of music and art. Marijuana doesn’t distort perception so much as it alters it, changes it, by focusing attention on the multi-layered characteristics of art and its overlapping meaning. Marijuana causes the mind to be more open to the creative stimulus of art and music.
4) People use marijuana because it enhances their powers of concentration. This may seem counter-intuitive, as marijuana is well known for helping the mind wander. But this is actually an important aspect of problem-solving, an ability to look at an issue, subject, or even a problem from different points of view. Marijuana doesn’t create difficulties in learning, thinking, and problem solving but instead it stimulates new perspectives that, if harnessed correctly, enhance concentration and understanding.
5) People use marijuana because it stimulates new and creative thoughts, sometimes with humorous consequences, and at other times producing insight or inspiration. Many people use marijuana because it contributes to an enjoyment of thought and deliberation. Marijuana users often appreciate nuances of wisdom and consciousness, and use their experiences with the drug as a source for spiritual insight.
6) And yes, people use marijuana because they like to party. Marijuana is also well known to contribute to social interaction. Marijuana use among groups of people stimulates conversation, sometimes interesting and yes, sometimes silly and mundane. This characteristic of marijuana use is one of the most frequently portrayed effects of marijuana in popular culture. Nonetheless, the ability of marijuana to stimulate and contribute to socializing is an important aspect of its popularity.
7) People also use marijuana as an aphrodisiac that, in various ways, enhances sexual pleasure. Almost all of the uses of marijuana described above can contribute as well to sexual enjoyment, including relaxation, stimulation of the senses, appreciation of music, and enhanced social interaction. As with alcohol the right amount of marijuana can contribute to sexual enjoyment while too much marijuana can make sexual relations utterly impossible by causing an individual to pass out.
8) This brings up an important reason people use marijuana, to help them sleep. Marijuana is a biphasic drug; it produces stimulation followed by a period of sedation. The attributes that enable marijuana to help people relax also help them get to sleep, particularly if they’ve had a stressful day. Aside from its effects on thought and perception, marijuana has analgesic properties that relax physical tension. Furthermore many individuals report that marijuana eliminates nightmares produced by post-traumatic stress, an attractive feature for war veterans of many generations.
9) Many individuals use marijuana as a source of relief from pain, both from the minor aches and pains of everyday life and chronic pain from serious injury and chronic disease. Scientists have documented marijuana’s activation of pain-reducing networks in the brain. Medical researchers and patients are especially excited about the ability of marijuana’s cannabinoid drugs to reduce pain without depressing heart and lung activity in the way of opiate drugs. For this reason many patients with chronic pain favor marijuana as an alternative to reliance on opiates. Not only do many find marijuana an effective pain reduction agent but they also find many of the effects described above to be preferable to the side effects of opiate drugs.
10) People use marijuana because of several other medical properties. For many individuals marijuana helps control the spasticity related to multiple sclerosis and movement disorders. Marijuana helps counter reduction of intra-ocular pressure caused by Glaucoma. The drug’s appetite stimulation properties are beneficial to patients whose medical conditions cause a loss of appetite, and marijuana is an effective anti-emetic, a drug that relieves nausea, particularly helpful for patients suffering from the nauseous side effects of chemotherapy. The beneficial medical properties of marijuana, or cannabis, as it is referred to in a medical context, have been recognized and accepted by several state governments. Regardless of the social and political controversy surrounding individual use of marijuana, the therapeutic effects of the chemical compounds found in cannabis are recognized by the scientific community throughout the world.
Marijuana use has risks and side effects, like any drug, and while many adults use it responsibly there are others who abuse it. Marijuana, like alcohol, requires many of the skills and the maturity of adulthood to use responsibly. Teenagers should not use marijuana, alcohol, or tobacco, nor should they use prescription drugs for recreational purposes. No one, adult or teenager, should go to jail for marijuana use. Even ONDCP has begun to recognize that many marijuana users, even teenagers, use marijuana as a form of self-medication to respond to various medical or mental health conditions. With teens especially, these conditions ought to be treated by medical and/or mental health professionals, and it may well be that in many cases marijuana use is not the best treatment. Nonetheless, the use of marijuana - for the reasons above or for any other reason - is not a crime.
Why do people use marijuana? Ten reasons they do are described above. Why do you think people use marijuana? Please use the comment section below to let us know.

The poisoning{which anyone who eats cooked or frozen food most definately has}has been very destructive to my pursuit of happiness my whole life.
This poisoning with symptoms of Fear,Hate,Anger and Suffering is well known throughout time by healers. The temporary remady for this enzymless poisoning has always been cannibis.
With the eating ,smoking and drinking of this remady I am able to direct my life so as to be happy.
I believe that while "High" I am my true self due to the absence of the symptoms.
The permanent cure for the poisoning from cooked and frozen food is a regular diet of pure nonfrozen uncooked organic food ,having been raised on cooked food I am very addicted to it and cannot seem to quit.cannibis is my only freedom for these terrible symptons.

Sorry to be so long winded but we all know how stoners can be when they are trying to prove a point, right? Feel free to skip over this comment because I intend to tell a story about my choices for smoking marijuana...
I have been smoking marijuana since I was 18, a while after I graduated. Gradually I became a daily smoker and now I pretty much just stay high. Sometimes I start to feel a little guilty about the amount of $$$ we spend on it weekly. But we have both worked really hard, full time + hours since we were 18 and we have been on our own together pretty much since then, we are actually proud of what we have. A 2 story 3 bedroom place w/ a 2 car garage that supports his VW hobby/business...and a 2 year old puppy. We have a fully furnished place and nice things, however we distincly CHOOSE not to live extravagantly. Instead of shopping for purses, going tanning and getting pedicures I spend my spare money on pot...ALL of it :oP We have an amazing business plan that we can't wait to move forward with, however we are both still maintaining our 40+ hours at our full time job until we get the specifics nailed down.
Bottom line is my BF and I completely agree with ALL of the above reasons and that is why we use it! We took 1 year off of smoking and proved to ourselves that we are MUCH nicer, happier (and HEALTHIER) people when we do smoke daily. Besides the fact that I am apparantly intolerant to alcohol and I suffer terrible hangovers no matter how little I drink...I much prefer the effects of marijuana to alcohol. Not to mention I hardly ever get "smoked over" however ocasionally we do smoke waaaay to much right before going to sleep and have a little trouble getting going the next morning, haha.
Marijana can sometimes help me get going in the AM, get through the daily grind, relax after work, calm my chronic nausea/vomiting (un-diagnosed for 8 years now) it relieves my frequent head aches and as for my BF it is the ONLY thing that helps him w/ his ADHD, Anxiety/Depression. He is a much nicer person in general and our relationship is undoubtedly enhanced by the fact that we smoke together. PLUS it is an AMAZING way to get together with your friends and have fun, tons of fun! It always stimultes such interesting conversations and create so many great memories to last a lifetime.
Overall it makes me feel better and it makes me appreciate, life, people, the Earth, and even existence on a waaaaay deeper level than I ever had done in a sober state of mind. It makes me want to seek truth, question the media, the GOVERNMENT, our country...When I am stoned at home I love to go on wikipedia and expand my knowledge. My absolute favorite topics are conspiracy theories, the cascasia movement, marijuana, outer space/the universe, and religion. You could spend hourse getting lost on that site if you really want to learn about something. It's a great thing to check out when you are bored.
Please believe in these words and do your absolute best to live by them; Seek your own truth, Educate yourself, Experience the Earth, Love your Friends and Family and spread positivity into the world everyday!!! You have to find your own happiness, remember to remind your loved ones how special they are to you everyday. Let's TRY and make this a better place to live!

Besides, even if it were meant to be taken literally I have actually fainted from smoking too much pot on numerous occasions. It's actually pretty scary and I can always feel it coming. My BF always catches me and kind of slaps me out of it, to be honest. Weird?

Marijuana, the all-natural remedy, known for its medicinal properties for millenia is the ONLY treatment to bring relief with NO harmful side-effects.
Just because Drug Company lobbyists have such a strangle-hold on our policy makers, we must seek treatment illegally, risking arrest and prison. ALL BECAUSE CORPORATE AMERICA DOES NOT GIVE A DAMN ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE BUT MAKING LOADS AND LOADS OF MONEY!
Now, THAT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!!

In the Indianapolis Suburb that I live in the Cops are the ones Trafficking all of the "Drugs" into town, then they bust you for them. But they (the Police) run around Molesting 15yr old girls, and murdering those who stand in their way or know to much. The police are the organized crime syndicate of our generation, and I feel truly sorry for anyone that would whole-heartedly believe anything that any government agency would tell them...
There is nothing wrong with marijuana, but it is safer to bust pot-heads than Crack dealers, or meth-heads, and the police know this...
I believe that their are good cops out there who know that responsible marijuana use is not anything to be Concerned with, and they would rather bust Drunk drivers, child molesters, and meth labs. But at the Same time there are Mangina's on the Force that think they are big tough guys by busting marijuana user's and otherwise wrecking responsible tax-paying citizens lives

IT'S ALL ABOUT MONEY!
There are plenty of studies showing the pros/cons of this 'plant'. If it was up to the pros outweighing the cons, then pot would be legal and cigs, alcohol, and almost all of your pain killers, 'scrip' or not, would be illegal.
There are plenty of studies showing that legalizing wont increase crime and other hard drug use. Thanks to the Dutch and Canadians, (who have not turned their countries into some post-apocalyptic outcasts to society), this evidence is something that can even be experienced. Take a trip to Amsterdam and see if you get killed or greeted with a smile when you visit a 'coffee-smoke shop'. (prob be the nicest people you'll meet while your there.)
And Cops aren't all bad. Believe me we have all had our run in with the picked on nerd that group up to be a cop and is taking revenge on the citizens of their community. But Police are here to protect and serve. Trust me if your house is broken into or you got car jacked the first number you would prob dial would be 911. Right?
Unfortunately the PD is currently responsible for upholding the laws against even the most mature and safe uses of Pot.
I know quite a few Officers that have nothing against pot and know the truth.
We need to focus our energy not on hating Cops or Lawyers or Political Reps., but contacting the right people in the right way, and getting the truth out. Awareness = Understanding. This country is run by its people. But only when we are United. Think about it.

Bashing cops is not an answer either. They are after all doing their job. I believe the problem lies with the government and people who are too closed-minded to see the truth yet believe the stereotypes they have seen and heard.
The stigma of pot smoking is causing so much trouble. Have any of these "law makers" actually seen what alcohol can do to someone? Have they witnessed an oxycontin overdose? Have they ever had a migraine so bad that they wanted to put a bullet in their head? Yeah, people can overdose on anything, but I have yet to read of any high-by shootings. I have never read of anything remotely close to the drunken state that alcohol can cause. Drinking is not a problem for me, but I don't like how people act when they're drunk or the feeling I have the next day or the occasional hangover. I avoid that with pot.
The whole atmosphere of pot-smoking is more calm and relaxing. Why is that a bad thing?
i got high, no one died.

Marijuana is not right for everyone, some get paranoid and can't handle it.
No one should have to be paranoid, though. It should be legalized, and personally, I think cigarettes should be illegal. Marijuana doesn't kill you or have any major harmful effects, and cigarettes kill people everyday.

I think the war in Iraq would be over in a few weeks if they gave everyone some pot and brownie mix. The big corporations dependent on war don't like this kind of thinking - it hurts their bottom line too much. Corporations are like a shark, but instead of an eating machine, they are nothing but a money making machine. They are destroying the earth, and yet corporations actually have more rights than human beings.
Sorry to digress, but you can see there are powerful money interests who never want to see something like this legalized. It hurts their bottom line too much. They would rather see everyone miserable and the earth slowly destroyed, just as long as they are making money.
