Ten staffers laid off following the departure of MPP’s Chairmain of the Board and primary financial contributor.

By David Bienenstock and Richard Cusick
Billionaire philanthropist Peter Lewis has left the Board of Directors of the Marijuana Policy Project (MPP), after resigning his position as Chairman of the Board. In a related development, yesterday ten out of twenty-nine MPP staff members were laid off. MPP Executive Director Rob Kampia told HIGH TIMES, "The purpose of the downsizing was to ensure MPP's long-term health and financial stability.”
According to multiple sources, Lewis has already assembled a panel including former Executive Director of the ACLU Ira Glasser, Americans for Safe Access Executive Director Steph Sherer and former Nebraska Governor Bob Kerrey, and tasked them with advising him on moving forward as a supporter of marijuana law reform.
Lewis was the primary financial contributor to MPP and helped it become the best-financed marijuana law reform organization in the world. In 2007 alone, he contributed $3 million to the organization.
“Peter is giving no more money this year,” confirmed MPP director of communications Mike Meno, adding, “He already gave $900,000.”
“We're now at the level we were at in 2004,” Kampia said, “meaning six departments, 19.5 people on staff, lobbyists in six state capitals, and revenues of $2,300,000.” The executive director maintained that, “MPP is more stable now than it was in 2004, because our revenues now come from 9,000 members, rather than huge checks from a few people."
Meno also confirmed that Allison Green, Kampia’s long-time chief of staff who helped found the organization in 1995, resigned from MPP on June 1.

I say all this not to nay-say anyone, but come on guys and gals, grow up a little and please stop being so ignorant. We need to show people that marijuana smokers are not violent people who act on rage and hate at first site of something not being to our liking. Of course I don't mean this to everyone, but you all know who you are. This also goes for people who are thinking of writing more comments that are just a complete waste of cyberspace.
Why don't you all get together with other like minds in your community and go door to door to see how your neighbors feel about marijuana legalization. See if you can get their email to inform them about upcoming bills that will go through Congress or the Senate and advocate to them to write to your elected officials, as well as informing them about people that are going to run for an elected office so that we can make sure we have the right people in office. There are so many ways to better help our cause than saying fuck this person, fuck that person, fuck you. Yes, there are morons out there, but you should have realized that by the time you started going to school. As I'm pretty sure we're not allowed to throw email addresses around here, I can only ask that you visit my blog.(Which is currently only in it's beginning stages)

I will soon post some ideas that you can use to help get the change flowing. You all can be the voice of the nation, it's just a matter of taking responsibility. I wish you all great fortune and a life time of peace and love!

What sickens me most is.... women are, and should be considered by all, the equal of men. But liberal feminazis are constantly trying to have it both ways. You sit there and use your loaded terms, he preyed upon them, these vulnerable women, etc. Guess what I would say if my female boss hit on me and it made me uncomfortable? "I am not into you. Stop being creepy." Simple as that. Instead these "victims", adults capable of making their own decisions, are somehow incapable of standing up for themselves because they are a girl. TRUE misogyny, thrust upon women, by women, ostensibly for their own good because they are too "vulnerable" (because, after all, they are just poor little girls) to tell old dude to piss off, but have no problem telling every dip shit reporter alllll about his dirty jokes. *rolls eyes* If you sincerely want to advance the role of women in society, stop acting like whiny little bitches who are incompetent of handling their own affairs, and then in the next breath complain about how you are paid $0.77 for every $1 a man makes

Ha ha. I see that the boycott must be working. I will put it simple for ya. If there were a sexual assault(rape). There would have been criminal charges. But since there was nothing but a false accusation of rape. (Supposition upon supposition.) The accusers apparently didn't want to catch perjury cases. There was no case. So the accusers hiding behind this DEA rag's yellow journalism. Still accomplish their goal of divide and conquer, thus setting progress back by crying "He fucks sheep". I hope you narcs are proud of yourselves.

There's a difference between hooking up and sexual assault.
There's a difference between consent and the lack thereof.
And -- based on your comments consistently seeking to dismiss the seriousness of what Rob did to the woman, his organization and the movement -- there's a difference between you and someone who has any idea what the heck they're talking about.

Its far as one can get from a free love society.
Get real dude. Even free love hippies have their boundaries and know the difference between a one night stand and sexual misconduct. You don't see THIS kind of fallout from the rest of Rob's conquests. This one was different -- for you to be so sure that it was the power of Rob's attraction is laughable. Were YOU there? Did YOU hear her crying in the early morning hours?
She has to remain quiet because she was paid handsomly for her silence. Tell me how many "innocent" men offer large payouts to silence a victim when they are confident that there's nothing to hide?
Those close to her who were witness to her distress know what happened and could not, in good conscience stand by their boss after watching years of inappropriate language finally fully actualize into serious misconduct.
Do you REALLY wonder why Peter Lewis is making "such a big deal?" out of it? Because even Peter Lewis knows Rob is a scoundrel and has had enough.
sex-crime?
Jun 16 2010, 7:38 pm
My question is why is Lewis so freaked out about it? Was it a deliberate fake event to create trouble? If so, Lewis took it seriously. Maybe he felt he was being ripped off or something. The medical marijuana movement ought to be called, the "supply-side" marijuana kind-bud movement before it's completely legalized.
@Joe
Jun 16 2010, 5:21 pm
Their intention was to remove a wart from the movement because it had been there far too long and was growing more disgusting every year. Unfortunately, the outcome was not what anyone wanted:
* One victim of a sex crime - with the perpetrator unscathed and still in power.
* Seven others who stood nothing to gain by speaking out against it and leaving their beloved jobs behind in protest... simply because it was the right thing to do.
* Numerous other great people who left "quietly" (in that they decided to bow out gracefully, without making a stink about Rob). However, most everybody knows they left because Rob is a bad leader and a vile, callous and selfish ego maniac with a long and sordid history of inappropriate and offensive behavior, and they wanted no more association with him. A few of his longest, most dedicated colleagues all suddenly decided to (willingly) abandon the organization. Coincidence? I think not.
* 2 prominent board members resigning upon Rob's imminent return from his leave of absence and continued refusal to step down or resign.
* 1 Chairman of the Board resignation who also decided to pull the funds he had committed for the remainder of the year. Yes, Peter Lewis has given quite a bit of money to MPP this year already, but lets not forget he is a man of his word and fulfills his commitments. Year after year he committed to -- and followed through on -- a monthly payment schedule on an annual basis. But he abruptly ended his monthly giving upon Rob's return and is now following through on a new commitment: To STOP his monthly donations to MPP, thereby reducing his annual giving to the organization to less than half of what he had given in prior years, with no promise to give again in the future. The result of which immediately up-ended important state campaign work, resulted in numerous layoffs and a halted the grants program. MPP would have you believe they still have Peter's support. Really? Does resigning from a board and ending a long-time planned giving schedule sound like support to you?
* 14 total layoffs over the course of two months, immediately following Rob's return. 4 of whom volunteered to be laid off in May, followed by 10 more who were forcefully laid off in June.
* Additional people jumping ship, including the Chief of Staff and others who know when a ship is sinking and recognize when its time to find a life boat elsewhere.
"The purpose of the downsizing was to ensure MPP's long-term health and financial stability.”
Ah, rest assured that the organization is safe and sound now everyone. Rob has done what he needed to do to ensure the future health of the organization [and himself] by losing some of his best and brightest.
Half of the people who worked for MPP one year ago, are now in unemployment lines as a result of Rob's gross misconduct, but HE HIMSELF is still sitting pretty, collecting his paycheck, and callously acting like this is no big loss to the organization or to the movement in general. He still has HIS job after all.
“We're now at the level we were at in 2004,”
How nice that you set your organization back 6 years Rob...good work! But do you really think you're at the the same level without the likes of Aaron Houston and other shining stars you had on your team in 2004? Was MPP's reputation as damaged in 2004 as it is in 2010?
In 2004, MPP was a respected organization on the rise. Now it's gasping for air as it tries to salvage its reputation, stay relevant in the movement while other organizations are doing [more] impressive work, struggles maintain its donors and does its best spin job to assure the public that it's still worth supporting in the wake of a shameful public relations disaster when it's quite literally, half the organization it was one year ago.
I would say, not only has MPP been set back 6 years, but they have yet to see all of the fallout that is still to come from their damaged reputation and the resulting loss of their superstar staff and donors.
Don't blame the victims or the messengers, Joe. Blame the offender and remember that shit flows downhill. The one at the top is avoiding the sewage, but all the others under him are drowning in his shit.
Good luck MPP. You did great work until one person's ego got in the way of all common sense and took everyone's hard work, accomplishments and reputation into the shitter.

All it would have taken was for Rob to realize, "Hey, maybe I shouldn't sleep with someone who works for me after she's been drinking -- I've even been warned specifically about doing so," and none of mess would have happened.
No negative press coverage. No employees speaking to the press. No settlement. No departure of dozens of employees, including department heads and the Chief of Staff. No layoffs. No Peter Lewis taking his money and influence elsewhere.
It all derives from a colossally stupid and selfish act on Rob Kampia's part.
