"Are you a marijuana user?"

By Rob Kampia

People involved in marijuana policy reform are inevitably asked the question, “Are you a marijuana user?”

Whether or not the reformer uses marijuana, it isn’t obvious how the question should be answered.

Of course, whether or not a particular marijuana policy activist uses marijuana has very little to do with whether our nation’s marijuana laws should be changed.

But to answer the question by saying, “It’s none of your business,” isn’t the way to go. Why? Because it comes off as rude and therefore isn’t effective if you actually care about making a positive impression on the person who asked the question. So your answer shouldn’t focus on how offensive you find the question, but rather on how to direct your interlocutor to the real issue – arrests and prison, arrests and prison, arrests and prison.

Interestingly, those of us who have been arrested for marijuana are in the strongest position to answer the question. Because I’ve been arrested, I can say, “Given that I was arrested and went to jail for marijuana...sure, I’ve used it.” This kind of answer points the conversation in the direction we want it to go – arrests and prison.

For people who haven’t been “lucky” enough to have been arrested, one way to answer the question is to treat the issue as the personal, private matter that it is. During MPP’s first ballot-initiative campaign in Nevada in 2002, a Newsweek reporter complained to me that one of our major supporters had refused to answer the question; the reporter couldn’t understand why someone who had invested so much, both personally and financially, in reforming our nation’s marijuana laws wouldn’t talk about his own marijuana use.

I responded by telling the reporter that he wouldn’t dream of asking a Planned Parenthood employee whether she had had an abortion. And, I continued, the marijuana question is even worse in some ways, because the Planned Parenthood employee wouldn’t be admitting to a crime if she were to answer in the affirmative.

And in thinking about the comparisons to another divisive social-change issue...

The marijuana policy reform movement bears a strong resemblance to the gay rights movement, in part because both began to coalesce in the late 1960s with distinctive cultures of likeminded people. So why has the gay rights movement been much more effective than our movement? Largely because the gay rights movement has incorporated the strategy of its members “outing” themselves: Many of its leaders quickly recognized the simple truth that it’s harder to demonize a group of people if you actually know (and even admire or love) someone who is part of that group.

The marijuana policy reform movement could have the same success if more of its proponents were to disclose their own marijuana use. It would then be much harder for our opponents to invoke the term “pothead” or cling to other pejorative stereotypes.

Of course, in publicly admitting to one’s marijuana use, could you be subjecting yourself to arrest and criminal penalties? No, because there’s a difference between disclosing that you currently possess/grow marijuana versus disclosing that you currently use marijuana. It’s a matter of wording, and the latter wording is the smarter wording.

In my opinion, it’s best for most marijuana users to come out of the closet, perhaps by saying something like, “I’ve used marijuana, it hasn’t hurt me, and it actually has a beneficial impact on my life.” More people need to hear this message from more of us.

And if you’re not a marijuana user – and many marijuana policy reformers are not – the question is a perfect opportunity to explain why marijuana policy reform isn’t about changing the laws for personal gain. Rather, it’s a serious civil liberties issue that everyone, not just marijuana users, should care about.

Back to the issue of outing oneself: I’m a marijuana user.

Sorry Antonio, but weed is NOT legal in Amsterdamn. It is TOLERATED, but still quite illegal. This is the biggest misconception of all time. The ONLY place on the face of the Earth that marijuana is ACTUALLY legal is the city limits of Denver, Colorado. Outside of there, it is ILLEGAL everywhere. Even in Denver there is a loophole on the legality, the damn FEDERAL laws override the city's law. So, basically, marijuana is 100% illegal EVERYWHERE (some places just "allow" the use).

I love all you Potsmokers out there! Ecspecially those who brave the elements outside the closet. So here it goes,an official daily for 30 years. The first 15 years of this lifetime was filled with second hand cigarette smoke until I found what pleasd me. I too have to admit maryjane has saved my life more than once. I would really love to see this God grown herb legalized before my time on earth is up.For crying out loud it was legal when my grandmother was born. I would like to hear more about the march on May 3rd,and what I could do to contribute. This has been a personal issue for over 30 years. For a sharing and caring person it has really sucked having to keep one of my greatest loves in the closet just to stay out of jail or not be fired from work,or even worse have it used against you by family,co-workers,bosses at anytime.Ya that's right had a boss who would send US out to break for attitude adjusment and 6 months later used it against me in the H.R.office.Now with the employment stigmatism it's just a big bowl of B.S. Thank you all for your openess and honesty. any suggestions on vaporizers? Good day and
God bless you Airborne.

Pot is not legal b/c the government just cant control it to make money off it. ive seen people's life's ruiened from pot bgut only b/c of the laws that prohibit it!!! Ciggaretes and alchool kill people every day and are a man made substance. so why is it that a natural substance that hurts no one is illigal?? Ive been around allot of smokers, and the most it does it chills them out.It tends to make people a more happier and calm person. when the government can make some more money off us by pot then they'll leagalize it.

troy19BGoh4204Life put it so well in his responses. It is so nice to see some articulate responses on message boards normally spammed by seventh graders. I agree with everything troy says. It is a gift from god. I believe in God, I beieve that Jesus came to earth. I believe that pot harms no one. Using marijuana is a individuals choice. Some people may say that because I use cannabis I am not a chirstian. This is simply untre. Cannabis is a wonderful plant that has only brought healing and happinesss into my life. The only harm that has come into my life from the plant has been from the consequences of laws created by homophobic, racist, "christian" men who do not use the life plant. Peace to all of you. I hope the "reefer madness" attiutudes towards the plant will soon pass.

No political organization gets what they want unless enough people make a fuss, and the gay community uproared. It was a religious, political and sexual issue as well as others. The marijuana/drug issue runs centerstage to everything that our country revolves its power around. Marijuana and drugs characterize politics, money, mindstates, the oil industry and various other aspects. The government is trying to do their best to use it for there only personl gain, because there is no sense to their actions otherwise. Most of you know this. It was the same situation for gays; "In God we Trust". Homosexuality is a "religious sin" and America uses the religious model to control, so of course they were against it. The gay community has had much success, and the marijuana/psychedelic community is strengthening itself due to all the information available via internet.

I am a disabled Veteran that suffers from degenerative disk disease and from nerve damage through out my body. The VA in all its wisdom refuses to provide meds that work. If it wasn't for cannabis, I would have killed myself years ago from the pain. If the masses only new how useful this medicine truly is.

As the MAN HIMSELF, BOB MARLEY, once said...

"The more man smoke herb, the more Babaloyn fall..."

A statement with more truth in it then anything the United States government has ever said...

The government keep marijuana classifed as a "CLASS A" drug while alcohol and tobbaco both legal, drugs that own their own, kill motherfu**er's ver sinlge day in this counrty, every single minute. I'm not knocking either one of thoese either, personlly don't drink but have no problem with it, although i do smoke cigarettes everyday of my life. I personally thinks its biased, prejudice, arrogant, and ignorant to have thoese drugs leagle, and a plant SO NOT dangerous like pot illeagle.

troy19BGoh4204Life

Apr 1 2008, 5:42 am

Marijuana is one of the most beautiful and peacefull things ever created. God created it at the begging of time, and he wouldn't have done so if he didn't intend it to have a purpose. The only reason it became illeagle and remains illeagle is becuase of racism. The government will never even pass a bill about it because they don't want to have to face the truth about why it's outlawed.

Marijuana truly is nature's cure all, even if some of the healing properties are "just in your head".
As a part of my healthy active lifestyle, pot boosts my spirit when I am feeling low and helps me come to clear minded solutions where I might have made a rash decision.
Everyone is different but the green has saved me in so many ways. Keep growing and supporting tradition.

Marijuana is a wonderful piece of this earth and it is sad that our own country who preaches freedom is slowly being swallowed by corporate interests and a rotting of moral fiber. Spread the word to your friends and family, they dont have to use it, they just have to be smart citizens and make this country better for all of us. I will do my part and preach the truth and so should you. but one things regardless, I WILL SMOKE WEED TILL THE DAY I DIE, LEGAL or not..

once, i was asked by a deputy at intake if i used heroin. if i did, theres the chance i could have stampbagged my way through the weekend. as far as corporations ruling america, you gotta realize theres a firesale on american companies. theyre all being outsourced or bought by foreign corporations, so when they shutdown the factories and americans are out of work and buying everything a to z from foreigners, theres the excuse that the media mezmerized americans to the point of apathy.

Ignorance circumvents protesters from reasoning. If they dont know something and someone tells them something while posing as an "authority" on the topic, bandwagon approach is simple and effective. National Drug Control Policy Association likes it this way, so they dont have to do any REAL research... or heaven forbid actually admit they are fucking wrong.

I am a marijuana user and it has positively affected my life. I hope it does the same to all I come across.

Daves Nothere

The main reason most people do not admit they use is due to the Nazi tactics of this country. They do not want to jeopordize their families, jobs, and personal freedom. Ever since our criminal law system changed into big business, we are again forced under the corporate rule. Bend over and take it!
