Sky Picnic:
With a love of music, a penchant for exploration, and a history of elaborate and intense live performances, Sky Picnic bridges the gap between experimental and straightforward music. Described as “dark and eerie layered psychedelia” (Low Cut Magazine) and “highly textured psychedelic space-rock ... a major point of comparison is the Syd Barrett-era of Pink Floyd" (Brooklyn Rocks), Sky Picnic is laden with creative songwriting, solid musicianship and a vintage, yet modernized feel. Each live performance stands out as a one-of-a-kind musical trip that blurs the lines between music and art, with experimental instrumental breaks full of feedback, echoes and endless exploratory possibilities.
Chris Sherman (lead guitar/vocals) and Leah Cinnamon (bass guitar/vocals) founded Sky Picnic in early 2007. After recording some primitive demos as a pysch-pop band with various intermittent drummers, the two eventually evolved, finding their niche in a more progressive genre. Pete Meriwether (drums) joined the band in October 2008 to complete the trio. Sky Picnic has since released its first record (which has received high praise), gigged around New York City, put out an experimental live record, and has been hailed as “one of the precursors of this era’s Modern PsychProg movement” (IndepenDisc).
Sky Picnic’s debut EP Synesthesia was self-released earlier this year and was subsequently picked-up for distribution by IndepenDisc. Songs such as “Tea Break,” an ode to perpetual sleepiness, and “The Wise Man Lost His Head,” a dreamy psych song touching on our political landscape, are balanced by the menacing sounds of “Moons of Jupiter” and “Sequence IV,” the thirteen minute multi-part epic closer that “will melt faces” (Psychedelic Music Blog). Coupled with the aforementioned live performances, searing echo-drenched guitar solos, jazz influenced drums and pulsing fuzz bass, Sky Picnic re-creates the unique psychedelic experience that has been absent since the era of Sgt. Pepper and Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
