Also Subcool, I thank you for always showing the linage of your strains. I will always tell the stories of mine the same way. Commitment like yours is commendable!!!!!!

this event was so lame.. i and my dispensary participated (at significant cost)only to find this event basically the same as every other "weed expo" we've attended in the past 2 years.. there was no love whatsoever for the marijuana, it was the furthest thing from a competition, which is what we had looked forward to.. we wanted to comare and compete with other growers, etc.. this event was a severe disappointment.
the awards ceremony was painfully bad, photocopied paper awards, it took forever in a tiny steamy basement, we were made to watch a horribly-produced video with terrible sound for way too long..
better luck next year but here are some pointers:
1. eating 30 edibles in 2 days does not instill confidence that you can judge these medical products effectively.
2. have a couple judges that aren't silly east-coasters out here for the week, enchanted by our 'weed paradise'.
3. make the event more about the entrants than about the vape vendors and ad dollars. have some info on the entrants, some pictures and information - this is why i came to the event, not to get more cheap handouts from jar and vape vendors.

$150 worth of parking tickets, and was told to go away and come back Sunday because it was too full(i drove from the south bay)... Find a new location that can actually hold some people.

At least I got to tour some clubs in SF after we were turned away.

No Water?! I would have died if it weren't for the kind folks who shared water with me at the event and concert. However there was plenty of free weed and edibles so I had a great time regardless. I also was bummed that I paid $50 for the Saturday night party that had no free food or drinks. Once again I survived by sipping others drinks and I did greatly enjoy the music. I didn't stay for the awards since I didn't get to sample but a couple types and my bud I brought from my LA farm was far frostier than anything I saw at the event. I will be back next year but expect mass improvements.

a friend from out of state bought a room at Le Meriden.
I drove 3 hours from up north..we smoked out all over that bubble. Nothing like the sound of San Fran wafting in your room at 4 am. Life and its offerings are what you make of it.
and that Elvis weed sure helped :)

If someone was from out of town or out of country, were they able to get meds? Did the doctors on site give reccomendations to everyone? I wanted to come from canada but was worried about not being able to access cannabis. I hope someone can answer me. I emailed ht a couple of times before the event with this questio. But no answer. I hold med card in Canada.
Thanks

As far as the Sativa winner thing goes,The grower that won said where the seeds came from and totally stated that. The guy did a great job!!! I'm pretty sure hes not the first to change the name of a strain.I hope everything gets straightend out because both deserve props.

I'd like to thank HT for there efforts after this mess it looks like they are deff trying to do the right thing now.
The two samples of Vortex tested within .016 of each others potency and the kid just out grew me I know lots of people I have taught that have better runs. I thought our Third Dimension entry by Happy Chief was going to beat me anyway :)

Vortex name was decided by 1000 growers who entered a Contest to name the strain with the Space like parents Apollo-13 and Space Queen the fans decided the winner so theres more history to the name and the strain than people may know.

I dont have a problem with someone buying my gear and winning a cup in fact I think its as cool as it gets.

Not some elite clone but from a seed from a pollen chucker hehe

Have to agree the event reeked of cannabis profiteering.
Sold my VIP passes for face value-glad I didn't go inside. it was overcrowded, sounds unsanitary public vape bags? NO WATER? wow you would think the event planner would have done that much for the crowd?unbelievable.
Hope the guys I sold VIPS enjoyed the event!

after throwing the cannabis cup in Amsterdam for 22 years, you would think High times would have a system in place. They don't. It gets screwed up one way or another each year. Why do you think this should be any different?

Jun 23 2010, 2:26 pm

Greetings to all.

First- Thank you HT! Thank you for taking the initiative to plan this event and execute it.

With anything complex, the first time around holds a learning curve.

I'm anxious to see how HT handles the customer service aspect for all of us that were inconvenienced by the poor planning and readiness for the HUGE turn out. After traveling 600 miles and paying $100 months in advance per each ticket- I got stuck in a line that wrapped past the freeway exit!

To make things worse, ticket peddlers were pulling people out of the line, selling an access bracelet for less than I paid, and walking them RIGHT IN THE VENUE! WTF?! That's just not fair- High Times you should refund or re-issue tickets for next year.

After finally making my way in to the event, I was teased beyond explanation by all of the folks that entered the cup. I went to this venue to experience and be a part of the highest grade medicine.

There was not even an opportunity to taste each entry and be your own judge.

Sooo... HT, consider a $100 entrance fee, with an extra $100 fee paid 4 months in advance which would guarantee 1/2 gram of each strain entered.

Those entering should be made aware of how much medicine they must have accessible to the pre-purchasers.

Would I go again? If things don't change, no way! Save your money, and read about it... there was nothing exciting this venue provided...

EVEN DANKO's grow class was soooo basic...

I know... I sound like a biatch, but I work hard for my money- this was an expensive trip that did not meet my expectations.

Hopefully HT can get me back next year...

My wife and I attended the event on Saturday and I have to sadly confirm that the event was poorly planned. Although we did have a good time when we got in. I feel for the hundreds of people who were turned away. We got in line 20 minutes before the doors opened(11:40am) The line was long but nothing you would think that would take 2.5 hours to get through. The line moved 10 feet every 20 minutes, ridiculous. I was pissed once I got to the door and so was everyone else. I mean, people came from out of state to attend this event, bought tickets ahead of time to get turned away at the door. WTF HT?!! This venue was for weddings, seriously no joke.
HT, get it right next time and pick an appropriate venue. Maybe a expo center or fairgrounds?
Respect to Subcool TGA and Cannibus Cup winner "Vortex".

Thanks to high times for putting the amazing event on. I'm still feeling sureal that we have come this far. Way to go guys.

I only made it to Sunday, but the event was AWESOME. The vendors were nice and engaging, the crowd was cool and behaved, and the seminars were wounderful. A special thanks to George for all the years of work getting the information out to all of us. Seeing him live was something I never thought would happen. Also, Danko's presentation was very good. It was great to hear confirmation of the practices I use versus what one of the big boys thinks is best, and I did learn a few things. It looks as if the young stoners enjoyed the DJ outside. Just a quality even, especially for the first time around. You guys rock!

Can't wait till next year. If ya are scorching this year, come to tahoe and hang out. This is the most pot friendly city in California!

Thanks to all who attended, vended, entered and chilled! The video above should alleviate any controversy surrounding the name of the winning sativa. Clearly, even the grower acknowledges that he grew out Vortex from TGA/Subcool and renamed one of the phenotypes of the strain. Congrats to the winners and all who participated in this historic event! We have heard all of your concerns, complaints and suggestions and we're already planning bigger and better "extrava-ganjas" for the future!

The vendors were awesome! They made the event.
I just wish they had a water dispenser or vendor - I can't handle that chlorinated tap water in SF. Had to walk across the street to buy a $2 bottle from the gas station. HT should have advertised Bring Your Own Beverage.
When they announced the winning strain, we in the audience had no clue what strain had won. Only to find out after the event, that it was really TGA's Vortex. What an insult to TGA. Now you know why they have copyright laws.
Behavior like this will lead to stupid copyright laws in the cannabis industry.
This is not China.
NOW, STOP IT!

Jun 23 2010, 9:42 am

I completely believe there is no malice or conspiracy behind the judging at all. It was just very subjective and poorly organized. I was happy to see some unknowns win big!
HT has made a change on the winners page and that means a lot to us.
Based on how the event was run though we have made the decision to become main sponsors at another event.
Thanks once again to Danny Danko and Matt Stang who worked tirelessly to make things work. Matt especially gained my respect as a man doing the best with what he was given to work with.

Alot of people are complaining about the size of the venue and congested paths, but anyone who went to the first THC Expo (@the LA Convention center)knows that there were long lines the first day and the 18plus section was hard to walk through too. The first event of anything is a learning experience, and remember most the HighTimes people are from the East Coast not the Bay. You can't change a Venue over night, since desposits are paid in advance. We hope they add more seats and places for people to relax next year though. We had to go up and grab our own seats at the award ceremony.
As far as Rigging is concerned, we're proof that it wasn't. We didn't even have a booth, and when we heard there were over 30 entries we thought it was over.Third place isn't first, but the fact that a small collective out of Redding placed is testament to the fair judging. Our tincture IS potent and acts fast, so no matter how many edibles you have had You Will Feel the medication working.
P.S. we agree, Vortex is the Real name of the Sativa Winner and TGA should be given their credit. Name changing leads to strain confusion.

Jun 22 2010, 9:45 pm

Was sad to hear that the judges had only a few days to try all of the goods. We walked out when they said they tried all the food products in two days! I'm a real patient who knows you can't test more than two food products in a day! Better luck next time. I do expect the thc levels of all the buds and food to be listed asap so I can be my own judge! But you guys said that would be listed in the next issue. Keep trying hard and listen to your fans and friends

Attended the Cup last weekend and was happy to see it in the US. Hopefully the next Cup will be a little more organized and at a better venue, especially for those in the chairs. Congradulations G-P. In regards to an apology is due, for what, growing a better plant?

Keep it fair

Jun 22 2010, 3:42 pm

Renaming strains is not fair to breeders and the #1 for Sativa is just an outright insult to Subcool. Does HT or GreenBicycles want to be taken seriously? Renaming Subcool's strain that offensive name makes it near impossible to bring people in to this movement that are not gross little juveniles. While the rest of us are working hard to present this industry as the helpful, kind and mature industry it is, it gets thwarted by the idiots in the field. Grow up children or just get out of the way.

I have been to many Medical events and this was not one of them. No access was made for those on wheels and when the winning Entry was submitted the name should have been rejected outright.

We spent 10 years creating The Medical Strain Vortex and to have it renamed so offensively was a slap in the face. The HT crew worked really hard for us and I thank them but as usual the low rent way things are thrown together tainted the taste and feel of the event. I notice the BC banner above my text they were nice enough to slam beers until they were drunk enough to crash into our display booth and break a banner display.
They didn't bother to show up on sunday Jill was ready to knock em out.
You dont have scummy looking people getting wasted to the point falling down at any Oregon Medical Event and we don't make patients wait in line.

WE had a blast and made a ton of new friends and gave away tons of buds tincture and seeds.

Way to put a good face on the first ever cup with the HT name. Way to pass on good manners to the next generation as well. I can't even tell my daughters the name of the Medical Sativa??

Oh thats right I can, Its Vortex by TGA

concerned entry

Jun 22 2010, 1:34 am

was looking forward to this event for months. but even as a entry having donating 40 grams of medicine and $500 in entry fees.. you'd think that they would have given us badges for easy entry. maybe even an actual seat at the awards ceremony. we didn't expect a red carpet but falling in the shadows of the large crowd was a bit disappointing. as much as i appreciate high times for throwing the event i am equally disappointed with their efforts to keep it MEDICAL.

P>S> i believe subcool seeds is owed an apology for the unnecessary name change of their strain the vortex. . leave it to us to name the strains. the actual breeders

me and my brother in law had a GREATTTTT time. my only complaints were that the terra was obviously way too small but hopefully that will b easily fixed next year. and i wish the seminars were closer together, because i wanted to see them all but i only made it to two of them. danny danko's cultivation seminar, and the cannabusiness seminar with an awesome pannel of pot vets. i fully enjoyed both seminars but if i sat there for the wait in between the rest i wouldnt hav seen anything else, and by the time i got back there were no more seats left.

Next Year= Bigger convention center w/a closed door seminar room at least twice the size of this years.

all in all great experience, thanks High Times

I heard a lot of grumbling from vendors about the size of the event, the narrow spaces, and the fact that it was scheduled for Father's Day (which explains the lower turnout on Sunday).

I was happy to see that a couple of the really bad people-flow problems from Saturday were corrected for Sunday (specifically, moving the Hash Bar out to where you didn't have to know somebody to be able to find it, and moving the MediThrive trivia game out of the narrow hallway at the bottom of the stairs). It shows that the organizers noticed, and corrected when they could. This is promising for future events.

Funny irony: the winners for Best Booth were complaining loudly all day about where they were placed, because they weren't able to utilize their flatscreen presentation like they wanted to!

Jun 21 2010, 5:13 pm

I went early on day 1, and the line was way too long, with not enough staff to get people inside without a long, long wait. Seeing as this cup is also for medical patients, it was poor planning for those who cannot stand in line for 90 mins plus. That being said, I did stand in line, got in, and had a great time and would like to see if high times can make next year much better! I would recommend a much bigger space, as getting around and through the crowd was work in itself. I enjoyed myself in the patient outdoor area, but was surprised and kind of weirded out to see two different people passed out on the ground (with crowds gathering) within 30mins of each other, and this was all before 3pm. I've never seen cannabis do this to anyone ever, so I can only imagine those people had other things going on with them. Thanks for trying High Times, let do better next year!

My boyfriend & I went to this event. WOW!!! Great idea - shocking that High Times would not anticipate the turn out and the TOTAL cluster at getting in the doors! I was very excited and to attend, but sadly disappointed! Sounds like the 2nd day was much better. I felt very bad for anyone who was handicapped in attendance. I think High Times fell very short on this event overall. No disrespect- just giving my honest feed back! I love High Times - get it together for 2011!

I was there pretty early on day one and was in the door reasonably quickly, but, I watched the line all day, from one end of the 215 area, and it sure seemed to move slow. The venue was way too small and the event was over sold, for the size of the area. Having said all that, it was a great time just perfect in the 215 area. The Green Door sno- cones were fantastic and all the sample hits, tokes, whiffs,or suck it outof a bag high times were high. Enjoyed running into people I had stood in line with and sharing another taste of whatever. Man my clothes and self smelled very strong of just smoke ect. Great time look forward to next year.

Wish I coulda been there, but as a student on the final stretch on my internship to pass school I dont have the time or money to get there from PA :/ But I'm just wandering about the biscotti winning first, cus Im a pastry student and biscotti are some of the nastiest things ever, so Im intrested if anyone knows how it tasted, cus it had to have been pretty epic.

The line sucked on day 1. Patients should not have been subjected to that wait. The venue also seemed rather small. Was pretty chill. I think I was in line with Travis and Katie!

I am disappointed growers and breeders were not able to compete for the cup. These clubs only purchased overgrow from members, why do they get the award?
