On Sunday, February 12, the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup culminated in the presentation of awards to the top products of the medical cannabis industry of Greater Los Angeles. A crowd of 500 filled the plaza of L.A. Center Studios to witness the first-ever cannabis competition that HIGH TIMES magazine has staged in Southern California.

Comedian Rob Cantrell kicked off the show and stars of the cannabis industry presented the awards, including HIGH TIMES Freedom Fighter of the Year Debby Goldsberry.

Also on hand to present the award for Best Sativa was the entire crew of Odd Future. Flesh-n-Bone and Layzie Bone from Bone, Thugs & Harmony took the stage to present the Best Hybrid Cup and revved up the crowd with their own impromptu pot rap.

Medical marijuana pioneer Dennis Peron took the stage and told the crowd that the age of legal medical cannabis is “coming soon” nationwide. The HIGH TIMES Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to the late, great Jack Herer who history recognizes as the leader of the modern cannabis movement. His son, Dan, accepted the award and warned the crowd against becoming complacent – that there is still important work to do.

Overall, the event was an enormous success and the HIGH TIMES crew was gratified with the warm, friendly welcome that the event received. In June, the HIGH TIMES Medical Cannabis Cup returns to the San Francisco Bay Area for our third event in Northern California.

Thanks to all vendors and judges and all of the new friends we’ve made throughout the great state of California, our nation’s cannabis capital!

If someone told me that in the year 2012 we would be having events like this and a magazine that advocates smoking pot, back in 1970's. I would have laughed my nuts off. But, here we are, and baby we've come along way.

I just hope to live long enough to see it go legal.

It could happen in the next couple of years, yell and monkeys will fly out of my butt, too!

Oooooh, and they called it the "devils weed" but God made it so that was bullshit from the get-go.

When's someone going to bring back the Sid, acid, LSD, trips, now that was some real "FUN", take a trip and never (repeat) never leave the FARM. I bet if we had a bunch of recreational drugs to do, we wouldn't have time to wage a war of crime, we'd be too busy trip'n. Isn't LA, LA, LAND a great place to hang out?

Patrick—The people that told you that are wrong. I know, because I was one of the people doing the checking. There were two tables where we were checking med cards and photo IDs all day on both days. There was a roped off path from the card check table that led to the gate of the medicating area, and there were 2 guards posted at that gate all day, both days. We can't help if some people manage to slip through, but I assure you that paperwork was being checked and that out of state and non-patients were not given the wristbands needed for entry. Don't believe those who are spreading disinformation in order to discredit the event.

If that is so, then how did out of state residents get in to buy cannabis? I have been told by numerous people that no doctors note was needed. It was a free for all.

That is bad for the community and I hope high times will fix it next time.

Incorrect Patrick, patients were being verified thoroughly to ensure all laws were being abided by.

That's not a beer in Dan's hand, it's the plaque he was presented for Jack's lifetime achievement award.

Is it true that medical recomendations were not being checked and verified(as required by law)and that marijuana was being sold to just anyone, even non-California residents? If so, how do you get away with that?

Got to love that pick of Dan Herer drinking a BEER.
What a great image to show the community.
Jack would be proud.

I wonder where Mark Herer was?

I guess he couldn't get them to pay for his flight and lodging so he just said screw it.

Recognizing Jack and his achievements was fantastic...but people seem to forget that Jack had a wife and no will.

It would be nice if the Herer family looked after her and helped her if she needed, but they seem to shun her.

Jeanie was Jack's muse.

We all miss Jack..
