Brain Center For the 'Munchies' Found

Cannabis is well known for increasing appetite. Now scientists know why.
Scientists have found the part of the brain that makes cannabis users crave pizza, chocolate and chips.
The discovery of the part of the brain that creates the 'munchies' could help to develop pharmaceuticals for anorexia or obesity, with minimal side-effects.
Australian researcher Dr Paul Mallet of the University of New England in Armidale and team will report their rat study in the journal Neuropharmacology.
"Because smoking cannabis increases appetite, it was believed that this was somehow related to the effects of cannabis on some brain centre but that was until now not identified," says Mallet, a biological psychologist.
"We've actually identified which part of the brain is responsible for THC's [the active substance in cannabis] effect on the stimulation of appetite."
They injected THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, into a specific region of the brain's hypothalamus, known to control feeding behaviour, called the paraventricular hypothalamic nucleus (PVN).
And they found it stimulated the laboratory animals' appetite.
"What we find is that these rats get the munchies," says Mallet.
The cannabinoid system
The brain has long been known to have a cannabinoid system involving receptors that react with both THC and a naturally occurring substance called anandamide.
Mallet and team are part of a research effort focused on trying to understand the reason why the brain has evolved this system.
"It's very unlikely we evolved a brain cannabinoid system so that we can get stoned at parties," says Mallet.
So far the cannabinoid system has been found to play a role in perceiving pain, motor control, storing memories and feeling hungry.
And it's this last role that has led to the development of new pharmaceuticals that could either stimulate appetite or suppress it by either blocking or stimulating cannabinoid receptors.
Getting specific
The problem is that cannabinoid receptors exist throughout the brain and play different roles in different parts of the brain.
This means that many of the cannabinoid pharmaceuticals being developed have unwelcome side-effects.
"For some individuals they experience pleasure, about four out of five individuals. But for one out of five individuals cannabis is quite anxiety provoking," says Mallet.
Now that his team have pinpointed a specific part of the cannabinoid system that is involved in hunger, this may pave the way for drugs that are more specific and have fewer side-effects.
"We've given the pharmaceutical industry ... a bit more evidence," he says.
He says future drugs could perhaps be designed to target cannabinoid receptors that are found specifically within the PVN of the hypothalamus.
Mallet says there may be other areas of the cannabinoid system that control hunger.

But I'd bet ot many of you know what it could do for global warming. Did you know that if the
U.S. grew Hemp, that it could produce enough paper to prevent any trees being harvested for paper production. Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't trees the pathway by which out air is cleaned of carbon dioxide, and other harmful chemicals which are rapidly adding up to cause the hole in the ozone layer.

Watch some of the television commercials about new drugs coming out. Do I really want to take an allergy medicine that could give me a blood disorder? How about a heart medicine that could cause lymphoma? Or maybe an acid reflux medication that could cause rectal bleeding? The "possible side effects" sound worse than the ailments!
I've self-medicated with cannabis for a number of ailments for years, and the only side effects I've had were occasional munchies and fits of laughter. Science says my brain knows just what to do with these chemicals...
Conversely, I've had a number of friends go on treatments with "new drugs" on the market, and they've ended up worse off for it.

And I disagree with Mallet about brain cannabinoid systems.
I believe smoking, eating, and vaporizing Cannabis is actually good for people - because Cannabis is natural and therapeutic for the human mind, physique, and spiritual self.
There is not a single "laboratory designed" pharmaceutical that permanently heals any part of the human body - not one.
All pharmaceuticals have dangerous side-effects on the human biology from mild to damaging, because they are made from chemicals or opiates.
This is also why the pharmaceutical industry uses "lab rats" to make sure their chemistry is not fatal to humans, and in many cases the chemistry is FATAL. Thousands of people die each year in America alone from pharmaceuticals, but not from Cannbis.
Who needs a PHD or license to understand this simple truth?
Pharmaceuticals are "short cut" drugs, and I would not consider laboratory chemicals a "medicine".
Why design poisonous synthetic appetite stimulants (pharmaceutical) when all we need is to make Cannabis oils, elixirs, tinctures, or "THC butter" for edible goods? We did before 1938 Marijuana prohibiton, and Cannabis worked very well then.
It is all about control, profit, and greed with Pharmaceutical industries.
These "educated" scientists are making good strides in the wrong direction - we already know that Cannabis effects certain parts of the brain that stimulates appetite, that's what we have been saying for years - just like global warming - and maybe somebody is starting to finally listen, but not entirely.

I'm not religious myself, but I do believe in karma, and that things in the universe tend to balance out. Does this mean that we're the only ones who truly are enlightened enough to use this part of our brains? Munchies aside, I still think it's worth it!
