Pot Penalties Harsher for Minorities

Blacks and Hispanics are much more likely to be burned by the system when it comes to simple marijuana arrests, a new study shows.

Even though blacks and Hispanics each account for 25 percent of Gotham's residents, blacks accounted for 52 percent of misdemeanor arrests for possession of marijuana in public view, and Hispanics for 32 percent, the study said.

The report, covering more than two decades, was first debated last August, but is now going to be published, with updated statistics, in the journal Criminology and Public Policy.

Dr. Andrew Golub and his colleagues at the National Development and Research Institute said their study revealed that blacks and Hispanics "receive harsher treatment at each stage of the criminal-justice system."

Paul Browne, the NYPD's deputy commissioner of public information, called it a "flawed study" that was underwritten by a pro-marijuana legalization group.

This is a lie, in direct contradiction of demographic data. Marijuana usage is within a couple percentage points of identical between white and black americans.

The U.S. is the most racist country in the western industrialized world. Black american males are far more likely to spend part of their lives in prison than blacks in South Africa under Apartheid.

Let us not forget that Marijuana is a "Black" drug and that minorities are much more likely to use. Also they live in areas that are generally lower income/ higher crime and therefore are more exposed to being caught. Studies like this show nothing. We need to know a lot more than it tells us.

The stats for this study are flawed. The study should compare the penalties that the different ethnicities get, not the number of arrests.

ie. it would have meaning if it said, 15% of whites were sentenced to prison for this amount of pot, while 37% of blacks were sentenced to prison for the same amount of pot.

It's not just drug charges, it's ALL crimes. Black and minority defendant receive the death penalty more frequently and are more likely to receive harsh first sentences despite committing the SAME crimes as whites. Furthermore why does crack carry a harsher penalty than cocaine???

There is a very beautiful gal in sculdary Virginia. She is seen from time to time by the local people of the small town. She is usually seen looking up at the clouds, or the moon and stars at night. She has no money however, and her skin color is of the lighter flavour, but due to the fact that she has no money, the bully police officers enjoy harassing her. She has been in jail so many times it isn't even funny. Why the police won't leave her alone is because she doesn't see any value in money, so the government's police force sees no value in her. Just yesterday, She was seen by my friend a last summer ago skinny dipping in the river. You could say that she was bear in sculdary that day. Ok, so the pun wasnt too good. My point is that the color of skin isn't as important as having money. Unless you run across a true racist cop.

Mortimer Quincy Snerd was on the traveling sales team when his Lincoln broke down on the road to Phoenix. The only place for miles happened to be a biker bar... where they didn't like his name very much.

After Morty got out of the hospital he presented his campaign idea to his mid-level manager. Those biker guys were ALWAYS getting hurt in bar fights, long achy rides and hangovers. It was untapped pastures of plenty!

Two-weeks later now it was a done deal. The new (OH NO!) "Bayer-in-skull" biker bar ad blitz was launched!

For instance a red line on the graph verses a black line depicting the actual corresponding incidents over time to compare one to another.
