Stoned: Oliver Stone Busted on DWI and Drug Possesion

May 29, 2005 -- LOS ANGELES - Conspiracy-loving director Oliver Stone had only himself to blame when he got busted at a police drunken-driving checkpoint - the location had been announced to the public in advance. The Oscar-winning director, 58, was busted on suspicion of driving while intoxicated and drug possession after he drove his Mercedes into the police snare on Sunset Boulevard at 11:45 p.m. Friday.

Hollywood's favorite crackpot conspiracy theorist voluntarily submitted to a field sobriety test, and cops say they found drugs in his car - although they wouldn't identify Stone's alleged substance of choice.

Stone, director of "Wall Street," "JFK," "Natural Born Killers" and the 2004 box-office bomb "Alexander," was released after posting a $15,000 bond seven hours later.

Eight other drivers were arrested at the checkpoint, which was part of a statewide crackdown on Memorial Day drunk-driving partiers.

"There were no incidents. He was very cooperative," said Beverly Hills police Sgt. John Edmunson.

He's had practice. In 1999, Stone ran into similar problems when Beverly Hills cops, suspecting he was driving drunk, pulled him over and found hashish in his black Mustang. He had been swerving over the yellow line while driving on a winding canyon road, according to a cop who spotted him.

He pleaded guilty to drug possession and DUI, and was ordered into a rehabilitation program.

Stone, who has said publicly that he kicked a coke habit in the 1980s, has been vocal about his support for legalizing drugs. In a 1993 magazine interview, he proposed dismantling the Drug Enforcement Administration and legalizing cocaine and heroin.

The Vietnam vet has won best director Oscars for "Platoon" and "Born on the Fourth of July," which were both about Vietnam.

He recently set tongues wagging by joking at a press conference that he wanted to make a film about the life story of Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher - starring Meryl Streep.

Stone's agent, David Styne, didn't return a call for comment yesterday.
