Denver Residents Will Vote on Marijuana Legalization

Wed, Aug 24, 2005 12:31 pm

Share |

Denver City Council members held their collective noses Monday and approved putting marijuana legalization on November's ballot.

They had no choice.

The measure's backers had collected enough signatures to force the matter on the ballot - but city law still said the council had to give its approval.

Members lost no time in teeing off on the measure.

Councilwoman Jeanne Robb said smoking three marijuana joints was equal to smoking three packs of cigarettes a day. She said it also kills brain cells.

Councilman Charlie Brown warned that political opponents would be "lower than a snake's belly" if they tried to use the vote against members. Brown and others noted that almost 99 percent of marijuana cases in Denver are prosecuted under state law. The city ordinance would not change that, they said.

If there is strong opposition to the measure, it wasn't evident at the City Council meeting Monday night. Six people asked to speak at the announced public hearing - all in favor of the legalization initiative.

Dr. Robert Melamede, former chairman of the biology department at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs, said he's smoked marijuana for 41 years. He said marijuana-like chemicals occur naturally in the body and that the real thing might well save brains cells while slowing aging.

After the meeting, Melamede called some council members "flat earthers" for their alleged lack of knowledge about the substance.

The measure would legalize possession of an ounce or less of marijuana by adults.

The supporters' main argument Monday was that smoking marijuana was better than drinking alcohol.

That line of reasoning did not appear to impress council members.

Councilman Michael Hancock spoke out the loudest against the measure. He said he has seen firsthand that marijuana use leads to harder drugs and can be devastating.

Also Monday, the council reversed itself and voted not to put on the November ballot a measure that would make the city clerk's office an elected position and give it responsibility over city elections.

The measure passed on an 8-4 vote on first reading a week earlier, but support has slipped since then. Council President Rosemary Rodriguez decided to take the matter off the council's to-do list and spend more time researching the issue.

Also Monday, the president of the Denver Barbarians Rugby Club issued an apology for team members who were accused of acting like, well, barbarians on a flight back to Denver after a tournament. Paul Hoskins said the team will work at a fundraiser for crime victims.

Team members were accused of rowdy behavior on the flight, including allegedly urinating in the galley and on the walls of a lavatory.

There was a final twist at the City Council meeting Monday. For the first time, a sitting U.S. senator made an appearance before the council. U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar was there to promote the new energy bill passed by Congress.

They say weed leads to harder drug use. However, the harder drugs come from the drug dealers. If it was legalized people wont get it from dealers they would go to the stores.

If a none pot smoker, and a pot smoker were questioned on who used cocaine, what would be your guess if it had to be one of them? This is how the goverment labels Mary Jane as a gateway drug. Alcohol has been known to tear familys apart, and push humans to make irrational decisions. Pot on the other hand seems to mellow out ones personality, and cause him/her to avoid violence. TO really put thought into it, if every human were to be high at a single point in time, we could consider our society to be in a state of "utopia".

The only reason weed leads to harder drugs is that people are not smart and do not know the diffrence between weed and other drugs. To put weed in the category of coke or crack is totally wrong. Weed is not that hard of a drug and thats why it should be legal. Also weed does not kill brain cells like people think it does. The scientific evidence is there to show weed is not all that bad for you but the govt does not want people to know about this.

Anyone who says that marijuana leads to harder drugs doesn't know crap...the government has been feeding that into everyone's heads for years without any definitive statistics to back it up. I've been smoking for nearly a year now and not only is my anxiety wiped out, but my GPA is steadily going up and I'm more productive than ever! I finally found my cause in college, Technical Communication, and I couldn't have done it without smoking weed. I'm not kidding, I was so drugged on LEGAL meds to "cure" my anxiety that I just got worse...when I started smoking, I relaxed enough to form positive thinking patterns about life. Omaha, Nebraska (and the rest of America for that matter) is gunning for you, Denver! Help start the ripple that will free our country from anti-weed laws! :D

another note would be that i havent ever done any other drugs. i started at 11 i am 22. i had no interest and still dont.now my next door neighbor has been doing meth for about 3 months now.i knew her before she got hooked ,she smoked weed,we lost touch until recently
and she is only 18.when i saw her she had no meat on her bones and her face looked like she was 80yrs.
and only after three months.
she used to be very pretty.
i got to know her very well along with alot of other users of meth and other drugs
over time and realized that marijuana isnt the gateway, its our weakness of self control and the ability to know ones boundaries.and until we all start taking responsibility for our own actions, people of our kind will never prosper, and will only make our ignorant government think nothing different.so show them yourself!

Petition HHS to Reschedule Medical Marijuana
RESCHEDULE MARIJUANA NOW!
In 2002, HHS was instructed to review the Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis' formal rescheduling petition. To turn up the heat, Americans for Safe Access filed a Data Quality Act petition in 2004, urging HHS to recognize the accepted medical value of marijuana. Acknowledging marijuana's medical value is necessary to push the federal government to reschedule marijuana. But the HHS continues to stall - and we are demanding an answer now! Another year is too long for patients to wait for safe and legal access to their medicine.

Please go to http://www.demaction.org/dia/organizations/asa/petition.jsp?petition_KEY=107

Or http://www.safeaccessnow.org/article.php?list=type&type=144

We, the undersigned, urge you to answer the Rescheduling Petition and the Data Quality Act Petition immediately with no further delay. The health and safety of thousands of patients are depending on your response. “

"She said it also kills brain cells."

THC does not kill brain cells. It does however thicken the walls of brain cells, fills the space between the synaptic vesicles within a brain cell and the space between the brain cells. This slows down the process of communication between cells. It doesn't kill them. This process is directly related to the heavy, long term use of marijuana. No documented, conclusive, long term impairment is associated with this process. To avoid the risk of cancer associated with inhaling smoked products, vaporize your marijuana. Enjoy.

I welcome your posts. I love debate!

A "user"? Definitely not.

A supporter? Definitely YES!!!

If you read the book "the Emperor Wears No Clothes" by Jack Herer or watch the movie "Grass" by Ron Mann, you yourself will begin to be educated about how Cannabis Hemp Marijuana once benefited America and our planet, and she will once again - mother cannabis. You are just another misinformed citizen until you do get educated about the "tree of life"... Jah bless!

I haven't smoke pot for some time, because I do not support the illegal drug trade or the profits that the dealers make. I support national legalization, because that will benefit America and the rest of Earth. If I could buy from a local grower, I would... other than that, ixnay my good chap!

Until that day of legalization, I fight for our freedom...

Aug 25 2005, 2:23 pm

Dear Thinker, I heartily agree with EVERYTHING you said.....you are so right!!! The issue of whether or not to legalize IS largely based on money and their lack of control over marijuana growth. I don't believe it's lawful to tax someone for growing a plant but if we don't allow taxing, they'll never legalize weed. There are alot of ideas already being circulated: selling marijuana right alongside produce at the grocery store, selling it exclusively at coffee shops, treating it the same as alcohol and cigarettes or my idea, just paying a yearly tax on growth and sale amount the same as we pay on any other earned income. I don't mind supporting our country or the WORTHWHILE programs of the federal government. I don't mind "being a citizen" but I DO MIND not having my rights. Just because marijuana may not be EVERYONE'S drug of choice, doesn't mean it should remain OUTLAWED. If it weren't so pathetic, it would almost be laughable. EVERYONE has a drug of choice.....whether it's alcohol, gluttonous eating, cigarettes, prescription painkillers, sleep meds, etc. We do a number of LEGAL things that eventually take a toll on our bodies.....all for the sake of some peace of mind. We're not wrong, we're HUMAN. As a society, to deny someone the right to use a God-given plant just because it may not be their drug of choice is hypocritical in the EXTREME. Sir, please keep posting. Obviously our country could stand more wisdom. PEACE

To further what's been said about tobacco and meth vs. cannabis, I used to smoke a pack and a half a day, and like somebody else said, I felt like crap all the time, even when I had a smoke in my mouth. I had to smoke at least once or twice an hour to feel ok, and even then, every time I opened the pack, it wasn't exciting, like packing a bowl, but just habitual. There are some TV specials on meth out there, and you should see these people. After a couple of years of using it, it makes 25 year olds look like they're 45...it wastes your body away. I know some folks who've been stoners for 30-40 years now, and they're some of the most healthy and lucid people I know.

So don't try to lie to a third of the American population, Uncle Sam, because they know the truth. The results are out there, and have been for decades. The government has been choosing to ignore the facts and attempt to keep it illegal. Why? Because they know it's going to be a difficult thing to control home growing when they decide to tax and regulate. The thing I don't get is, we tax and regulate alcohol, and I can brew up to 200 gallons of spirits a year without a license to do so. I probably wouldn't need more than a pound a year (and that's an extremely generous estimate) for personal use. We gotta fight for legislation like that too, when it comes around.

I personally take particular offence to this comment.
This is complete bullshit. This report was actually done by British Scientists a few years ago. They said that smoking a joint was worse than 15 cigarettes. THe reason for this was supposed to be that joints do not have filters like cigarettes. WHAT A LOAD OF SHIT! Tabaco contains fuckloads of chemicals like Tar, NIcotine and Carbon Monoxide...Fucking carcinogens. HOw many carcinogens does weed have???? Annointing oils use by prophets was actually made with nine pounds of
cannibis (kaneh-bosom in hebrew) along with several other herbs and an olive oil base. According to scientific research, the oil would actually be absorbed through the skin, along with a large amount of the THC, enough that it could cause hallucinations. Not only that, but apparently the insence they burned in the temples (like much of the ancient world) was cannabis based, enough that a person sitting in the temple, inhaling air in this smoke filled temple would actually be able to be "stoned" from it.
So we know who the righteous really are. Toke on.

There was a study that was released not too long ago that showed marijuana prevents lung cancer. So people going around saying that 3 joints is equal to 3 packs of cigarettes is criminal and instead of being a public health message it is the biggest public health disservice imaginable. By telling a marijuana smoker this who would have been in no danger of getting cancer now figures that he or she might as well smoke cigarettes on top of smoking marijuana since marijuana is already so bad for you. And I must say that the guy who called the people flat earthers was right on, what an excellent way to describe and catagorize these people who are so ignorant.

They say marijuana leads to harder drugs. Isn't it the person who makes that decision not the marijuana?
