Dutch Health Minister Says Marijuana to Be Exempt from July 1 Smoking Ban

Thu, Mar 27, 2008 3:23 pm

AMSTERDAM (Thomson Financial) - Dutch health minister Ab Klink said visitors to coffee shops will be free to smoke marijuana as long as it is not mixed with tobacco, after a smoking ban affecting all restaurants and bars goes into effect on July 1.

The minister was replying to questions tabled by parliamentary colleagues on whether coffee shops will become completely smoke free when the ban goes into effect.

Current tobacco laws in the Netherlands do not cover the smoking of pure marijuana or cannabis in coffee shops, he said.

Coffee shops also will be allowed to set up separate smoking areas for customers who want to smoke marijuana and tobacco, although staff will not be allowed to serve or do other work inside those areas.

Minister Klink said he would look into the ban's effect on coffee shops at the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009, including what percentage of coffee shops have opened a separate smoking area.

Hey you guys!.... I don't see what the big deal is I'm from America.... we don't get to smoke at all at least you guys have the great cafes even if you can only smoke tobacco in a certain section. At least you guys have the right to smoke marijuana here there is no way you could get away with that so just count your blessings and just smoke tobacco where it's ok.

TCB, sorry for taking so long to get back and I wonder if you will read this. Anyway, for FYI, I will probably vote Barack. It is not that I don't care about poverty and the like, it's just that if I am facing jail time, asset forfeiture and a criminal record, my priorities change.
With regards to Ron Paul allowing cutthroat capitalism, that's is what we have right now thanks to government corporate socialism which allows the company to be bailed out whenever the manure hits the fan (Bear Stearns). This seems fair to stock holders, but what about everyone else who makes bad decisions? By having corporate socialism, this allows these companies to make risky moves knowing they will be bailed out! It has alway been a misconception that Ron Paul wants to do away with Social security immediately. What he understands is that people are reliant on it. He also understands that it could be shored up if we stopped wasting our money on the military industrial complex. He also understands that if we keep raiding the fund and that if inflation rises faster then social security increases and if the value of the dollar continues to press the german Mark after WWI, retirees won't having anything anyway. I don't for a second believe that he thinks absolute privitization without select regulation is the way to go. I also know that he would need the approval of congress if he wanted to do as you say. As far as Supreme court justices, you are right---to a point. My problem is the answer to fascism always seems to be socialism and in the end the government always grows. I hate socialism as much as fascism. I just want to lead an uncluttered life free on people trying to live my life for me. I saw this bumper sticker and I think it is approriate: Vive tu vida i no la mia. Live your life not mine. Take care.

just quit smoking myself about seven months ago, it's been going great. Honestly it was only tricky the first few days and then after that, for about a month or so it would jut be hard if I was around my friends when they were smoking. Although there's nothing like a cup of coffee and a Lucky Strike over the morning paper, being able to run and shit again is great, let alone the cash you save. I figure with what i'd spend on smokes in a week can get me a nice fat eighth of the kind, or maybe a new piece.
So in the end, if smokin' is your thing, rock on, if you wanna quit the cancer stick, best of luck to you.
...either way, here's to the ganj.

TCB...re: Baked again

Mar 30 2008, 2:04 pm

Your grammar looks fine to me, Baked. I would never mention anyone's grammar unless they did something stupid, like insulting me and cursing at me for no valid reason. That's when the gloves come off, and I will use all of the ammunition they provide for me, usually in the form of bad logic, bad grammar, and a bad attitude. Their responses are usually the following:
1. They don't reply. What can they say when I've just held a mirror up to their own obvious flaws? It's staring them in the face, and they can't face it.
2. They reply with more curses and insults, while completely ignoring every point I've made, and every question I've asked them.
3. They go off on tangents, trying to justify their behavior by hiding behind things like "The First Amendment" and "The right to free speech", as if I'm telling them that it's illegal to say what they're saying.

Good luck with quitting the tobacco hobby. Any time I want to quit something like that, I find that eating more and working out every day is quite effective. When you stop taking a drug, you will have more overall energy, but people translate that into nervous energy and think "I need a drink/smoke/pill/snort to calm down", because they get used to suppressing that "nervous" energy with a drug. But when you feel that wave of extra energy coming on, working out will burn it off in a constructive, healthy way. Plus, you get that post-workout rush...endorphins are natural opiates. Trade your nicotine for endorphins (and maybe THC). I'm not saying it'll be easy, but you'll feel better AND stronger.
After years of taxing their systems with 'drugs', people forget what it's like to feel healthy, and they don't know how to deal with the high levels of natural energy that their bodies are capable of. Little kids know how to burn off excess energy, but adults are so clever that they learn how to forget what they knew as children.

Baked again

Mar 30 2008, 1:38 am

To TCB: I really don't believe that this person posting under "vote Ron Paul" is an actual voter. Ron Paul is a libertarian . I do agree on some of his policies. He reminds me of Ross Perot in a way. At least we don't have to worry about him running as an Independent.
Any person that says (or types) words like "faggot" in any form, is hiding the inner "gayness" themselves. You know...trying to be cool in front of everyone.
And about proper spelling and grammer? Well, I suck. And I'm pretty baked also so that doesn't help. It is the right thing to do to correct someone when they need to be corrected. Just hope they listen and learn from it.

TCB...re: N3v3f Str8

Mar 29 2008, 6:14 pm

Somebody has to at least try to teach the so-called "stupid kids" a lesson (and I don't think that "stupid" is limited to any particular age group--plus I'm not convinced that Vote 4 Ron Paul is "just a kid"). If I don't do it, who will? If I'm teaching important lessons to people, I don't consider it a waste of time. Even if they don't get it, maybe somebody else will. "Lighten up"? That's just another way of saying, "Go with the Status Quo", or "Don't even bother trying to make things better". That certainly isn't what High Times magazine is all about, and we will not achieve cannabis legalization with those old, pessimistic attitudes. TCH is about inspiration and optimism, not defeatism and pessimism. The November '08 election is going to be the past vs. the future: John ("Let's stay in Iraq for 100 years") McCain, or Barack ("I inhaled plenty of times, and I think cannabis should be decriminalized") Obama. Those are going to be the only real choices, everything else is a 3rd party protest vote, and doomed to failure and single digit results. I'm going for the guy who inhaled and wants to get us out of Iraq. He's also a former Harvard law professor. John McCain is more of the same when it comes to conservative, Republican policies that have put us into our current economic recession. If we don't change course now, we will experience the next Depression, the first since the 1930's. Maybe that will help us relate better to our parents, grandparents, etc.

TCB...re: Suggs4Drugs

Mar 29 2008, 5:10 pm

I'm encouraged that you're trying to be fair, and you make some valid points. But why should I be concerned with insulting this guy's intelligence after he called me (and many others on this site) a "faggot" and then accused me of being some kind of "agent", whatever that means. No, Suggs, your heart is in the right place, more or less, but when somebody starts taking shots at me like that, I have to put them in their place. It's not just for me, it's for everybody on this website. Either this guy can't handle his weed, or he's getting some lousy stuff, otherwise he wouldn't be so ignorant and hostile. Either way, I will not tolerate that kind of hostility and disrespect when I don't deserve it. If people want to throw that kind of shit in my direction, they will get back exactly what they deserve.
Unjustifiable anger, hostility, intolerance and the like are not what I expect from cannabis consumers. In fact, I expect just the opposite. But I appreciate your effort to mediate the problem.
Meanwhile, Vote 4 is free to reply to my posts, if he has the nerve, but if it's not an apology, you can bet that I will continue to verbally bitch slap him. Being stoned is not a valid excuse, especially when the behavior never changes. How many times are we supposed to forgive such blatent hostility that is aimed directly at us? Something tells me that you wouldn't put up with his insulting attitude if he was talking to you, and you'd be right. This poor, stupid bastard probably gets his ass kicked on a regular basis.

Suggs4Drugs

To TCB:
Normaly it would be okay to tell somebody off for using bad grammar. But we are all stoned and talking on the Internet, and you know how kids are, they take shortcuts while typing, kids and there aim...
So while I do agree with your argument with RP, I dont think its fare to insult his intelligence.

TCB...re: Vote 4 Ron Paul

Mar 29 2008, 2:12 pm

I forgot to point out that you spelled my initials wrong. It s/b TCB, not TBC. You only had 3 letters to deal with, but you still managed to screw up the order. When you were a kid, did they teach you your ABC's or your ACB's? Your post was only 3 short sentences, yet you made 3 grammatical errors in addition to spelling my initials wrong.
1. S/b a comma after TBC (s/b TCB).
2. You used the word "your"' instead of "you're".
3. You did not capitalize the 1st word in the 3rd sentence.
So, tell us, Vote 4, how are we supposed to take you seriously when you write like a pissed off first grader who suddenly realized that he can curse and scream at people without getting his ass kicked? You're completely safe, aren't you? You can talk like the big, strong, tough guy you aren't. If we put you into a crowd of real people, you'd never talk that way to them. Without your anonymity, you wouldn't be safe, and your brave facade would disappear faster than your writing skills. But take heart, Vote 4, there are plenty of angry, stupid little boys on this site that you can play with, and you can yell and scream at each other and pretend that you're all tough guys.
Meanwhile, you can continue to give Ron Paul a bad name with your insulting attitude that only turns off any potential voters who come across your brain damaged postings.
When Ron Paul loses in a landslide, you can thank the bad attitudes of people like yourself, although your ego would never accept that, so you'll probably blame it on those "sheep, faggots and bitches" who for some strange reason weren't convinced by your insults that Ron Paul was the best candidate.
The best thing you can do for Ron Paul is to stop talking about him. You're making him look bad.

Control your anger, or it will control you.

About what I expected of you, Vote 4...insults and conspiracy theories and bad grammar. No facts. I'm some kind of agent now? The agents, if there are any, are people like yourself, spewing hatred. You don't even understand Ron Paul's political platform(s). All you understand is that "Dude, he wants to legalize weed, he must be right about everything else..."
By the way, your 2nd sentence should read "TCB, you're a faggot..." You missed the comma, and the apostrophe between 'you' and 'are'..."you're", not "your". You are as lazy grammatically as you are politically. I have often thought that people who spew such hatred, like yourself, are the real agents of discontent, sewing the seeds of hatred on this website. Are you a narc, or some fundamentalist lunatic who hates the idea of people thinking for themselves? Once again, you and the others have avoided my main point; you cannot convert people to your cause by insulting them, calling them "faggots" and "sheep" as you have in your previous postings. Ron Paul is a far better man than you, and would condemn your posts. Ron doesn't want people like you representing him. He would be ashamed of what people like you are saying in his name. Go back and read my posts from 'Ron Paul Blast from the Past' 1-28-08. I'll stand by my previous statements.

First, thanks for laying out your opinions without being insulting and cursing at me. If you go to the 'Ron Paul Blast from the Past' article from 1-28-08, you will find a number of discussions between myself and several Ron Paul supporters where I give my specific views (if you're interested). For some reason, the RP supporters were mostly insulting, hostile and vague, rather than giving any specific facts about Ron's platform, so your reply was a breath of fresh air. Let me go thru it and give you my take on what you're saying.
I disagree with your views on the ONLY platform for pot smokers. Unlike you, I am concerned with many other issues, including the ones you mentioned. The problem I have with Libertarians and Republicans is their desire to deregulate and privatize everything they can get their hands on. This is the Ronald Reagan/Bush Sr. and Jr. thinking that got us where we are now. I don't want to lose gov't protections in favor of letting corporations police their own operations. Ron Paul's answer is, if you get food poisoning or injuries from poorly manufactured goods, take it to court. As I have said repeatedly in my previous posts, I don't want to spend the rest of my life chasing down corporations and fighting their legions of superlawyers.
As far as pro-marijuana candidates, Barack Obama has advocated decriminalization. That's the first step towards legalization, and more palatable to the average voter than completely ending the drug war. Personally, I don't want heroin and cocaine legalized, just cannabis.
Then there's the Supreme Court issue. Do you want John McCain or Barack Obama to choose the next 2 or 3 S.Court appointments? If we get 4 more years of Republican rule in the form of John McCain, you can look forward to a Depression, and how important will pot be when you're living on the streets? Not as important as the economy. I agree with the issues you listed, but for me there are too many other crucial issues.

TCB, it is amazing how so many people who smoke marijuana won't support a candidate who supports legalizing simply because they don't like other aspects of their platform. I have news for you, the ONLY platform for pot smokers is legalization!!! Any other issue is subordinate because frankly I can't give a damn about health care, poverty or the environment (or any other perrenial issue for that matter) if I am in JAIL. By the way, Ron Paul supports ending the Patriot Act, know your customer banking regulations, ending the Iraq war immediately, ending our participation in the IMF and World Bank, ending the drug war, ending surveillance creep, and bringing the troops home from the 140 countries around the world and using that money to shore up social security, medicare and other entitlement programs. How as a liberal can you not support that. Just because I don't support 20% of a candidates platform (ie abortion, global warming) doesn't mean I shouldn't vote for him, especially when I only agree with about 20% of what the other candidates have to offer. For me it's a no brainer. Stop voting against you own best wishes and vote for someone who actually will allow you to shoot for life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Don't come on a pro-marijuana web site and dismiss the only candidate left who would keep you from being a criminal.

Mar 28 2008, 1:26 am

Do you really expect to convert people to your cause by calling them all "faggots" and "sheep"? If Ron Paul drops dead tomorrow, will you lose all hope and give up? Ron Paul isn't some kind of savior, and neither is any other politician. There is no ONE person who's going to come along and magically SAVE us all. That's not how our political system works. Educating potential voters is crucial to the political process, but you're not going to educate anyone by calling them "faggots" and "sheep". It's a simple idea; most people just don't like to be insulted. If you insult people, they will be far more likely to resist your ideas. You are sabotaging your own cause with your own bad attitude.
P.S. I don't hate Ron Paul, I just don't agree with most of his political viewpoints. He is a conservative Republican, and I am not. Just because I agree with his pro-cannabis legalization stance doesn't mean I agree with the rest of his political platform. I am a liberal and he is a Libertarian, two very different political viewpoints. If you don't know the difference, listen to Air America, especially Thom Hartmann. Libertarians are not liberals, they are conservatives!
