Schapelle Corby Photos Seized in Raid

Fri, Dec 09, 2005 11:36 am

source: news.com.au

POLICE have seized photographs of Schapelle Corby with a man who has just been charged with marijuana smuggling.
The alleged drug dealer is pictured alone with Corby in some photographs and with Corby and another couple in others.

They were found during a recent police search of the alleged dealer's home in South Australia.

He was the target of a joint SA-Queensland police operation into a hydroponic marijuana smuggling ring allegedly operating between the two states.

The photographs were taken before Corby was charged in October last year with importing 4.1kg of marijuana into Bali in her bodyboard bag.

They were found in a raid that police believe helped bust a marijuana-smuggling ring operating between SA and Queensland.

A preliminary examination of the seized photographs has found they appear to be genuine.

The chance discovery of the photos comes as Corby, 28, is preparing to appeal against her drug-smuggling conviction and sentence.

Her lawyers last month lodged her appeal with Indonesia's Supreme Court in Jakarta.

They claim lower-court judges failed to consider evidence that would set Corby free.

But the Balinese prosecution team has said it plans to lodge a counter-appeal, claiming a recent Appeal Court decision to cut five years from the Gold Coast woman's sentence should be reversed and her 20-year jail term reinstated.

Balinese prosecutors are expected to seek access to the photographs seized by police in SA.

They will want them to try to cast doubt on claims by Corby in her trial that she had no connection with drugs or drug dealers.

The Balinese prosecution team is likely to request that police in Australia hand over the photographs and provide evidence about the alleged role in the drug-smuggling operation of the man pictured with Corby.

Corby's team argued somebody planted the marijuana in her bodyboard bag and said corrupt baggage handlers in Australia may have been responsible.

"I have never been involved with drugs," Corby told the Bali court during her trial.

"I don't like drugs. It's not my drugs. I wouldn't even know where to get the drugs from.

"I am not a person involved in drugs and I am not a person who might become involved in drug-smuggling operations."

The three Indonesian judges who jailed Corby for 20 years in May said she was legally and convincingly guilty of attempting to import drugs into Bali.

They said they believed the evidence of two Customs officers and two police officers who were present when Corby was stopped at Denpasar's Ngurah Rai airport on October 8 last year.

The judges said they gave consistent testimony that Corby was nervous when asked to open her unlocked bodyboard bag and actually slapped away an officer's hand as he reached for it.

Their evidence was that Corby said, "No, no – I have some", and that she confirmed she owned the items in the bag.

The judges said Corby's witnesses had failed to provide any objective evidence to back her story that the drugs were planted in her unlocked bag.

Members of SA's drug and organised crime investigation branch conducted the operation with Queensland Police that resulted in the Corby photographs being found.

They stopped a car near Burra, SA, in late November.

A search located a large amount of cannabis hidden in the boot.

An SA man in his 40s was arrested for possessing cannabis and has been bailed to appear in court at a date to be arranged.

Several residential and rural properties in SA and Queensland were later raided as a result of the November seizure.

Fifteen kilograms of hydroponically grown cannabis and almost $60,000 in cash were seized in the raids, as were the photos of Corby with the alleged drug smuggler.

A 60-year-old man and a 53-year-old man from SA will face charges of possessing cannabis and taking part in the sale and supply of cannabis.

Five men and two women were arrested in Queensland as part of Operation Co-Pilot.

A spokeswoman for SA police said that investigations into the alleged smuggling ring were continuing and that further arrests were expected.

Corby's father, Michael, was convicted of possessing marijuana in the 1970s.

Half-brother Clinton Rose has faced drug possession charges and spent time in jail for a range of offences, including breaking and entering, theft, fraud and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Michael Corby said in April that his daughter was opposed to drugs.

"She had nothing to do with bloody drugs," he said.

"She might have had a puff when she was in bloody Grade 10 or something, around the back of the schoolyard like kids do – I don't know.

"She's had nothing to do with it since, or any time as far as I know."

After having watched the HBO special on Corby, I'd say Indonesia is a corrupt shit-hole that conveniently didn't check for any proof or evidence surrounding whether this young woman was innocent. Instantly and seeming w/out listening to defense, a verdict was handed down that she's to be kept for 20 years?!?! Huh!?! No drugs in her system, no criminal record, and traveling w/family!?! Wow I guess that's how smugglers operate huh?! She doesn't speak their fucked up language, kept her and grilled her for who knows how long and say they have a confession?!? Many have fallen victim to the 'word tricks' of police, is it wrong to assume translations couldn't possibly be worked the same way? How does she even know her point is being translated correctly? Does she know what she's signing when she's been drilled for long periods of time in a tiny uncomfortable holding area for hours on end away from family w/no real answers or contact? Yay Indonesia! You're goverment is corrupt! Judges either bought or mad for underpaid bribery! Fuck the whole country, I hope a tsunami wipes it off the planet!!!!!

The Australian police offer to do forensic testing on the bag and Corby's defense refused. Meaning that she was afraid more evidence might arise implicating either her half brother or dad was involved. She is guilty, but 20 years in jail was a stupid sentence. Remember 3rd world country citizens are not the brightest and it shows in their legal system.

The Indonesian legal system is very corrupt and selective. It works great for traffic violations: just give the pig Rp. 20,000.- and you're on your way. There are emissions laws, but they are never enforced---city busses just pour it out. Last Idul Fitri, the police raided and confiscated beer from local vendors; I bought beer from the police station as local vendors were 'out-of-stock'.

Indonesia is a very lawless country and if you get caught in 'legal' issues with the government here, it's a much bigger issue.

Walk into any Indonesian disco and drugs are easily available---even from the waiter/waitress! They want to make an example of a foreigner and place blame on foreign influence (they also know that a foreigner may be in a position to pay a very large bribe in foreign currency---law here is extortion!)

You know, if everyone who posted and read this site were to walk into a police station with an ounce, and light up a sample, the resulting confusion combined with already overcrowded holded facilities would shut things down. Crime in other areas would pick up if all cops become "busy." If this could be done in big cities, thousands of people a day would be arrested. Most of those people work, of course. with so many workers missing, not only would the governmental bureaucracy gunk up, but the stock market would too!

Yep. More like a clear understanding of non-addictive medicines like Cannabis, and very addictive sustances like opiates, cocaine, amphetamines, etc.

Drugs are kind of like alcohol divisions - you have wine, beer and then the hard stuff like scotch, gin, whiskey, vodka, everclear, etc.

Cannabis is more like WINE, in its therapeutic use. But our stupid classification of scheduled drugs treats Cannabis Marijuana like it is METH, when it is not.

Again, it is all about greed, power, lies, and control.

If the DEA and local law enforcement did not have easy POT BUSTS in this country, they would be out of a job.

well that sucks,... i was truely hoping she was innocent. it's sad,...i know we shouldn't have to hide , but acts of stupidity like this does not help the cause. if she loses her appeal,..she could face the death penalty again. that law down there. kinda double jeopardy like. in closing,...take time to reflect on the things taking place around you,..stay aware of your nieghbor and remember to not buy into the goverment charged fear campaign. what we do is not a crime, no victom no crime.

A picture tells a thousand words....but if miss read then those words are worth nothing. It's a family photo... made out to be some kind of bullshit evidence.
A picture can be very misleading. If my grandfather was a drug smuggler and I had my picture taken with him should I be labeled a drug user?smuggler?or a dealer?
That picture should not be used as evidence against her what so ever....Digital photo's or photo's loaded into a coputer can be manipulated perfectly.I have done art work on my computer using photo's and I can make seamless additions to any photo...Give me that photo and I'll put Bush in it holding a pound of weed ....flawlessly!Bit for Bit....then let Bush explain that one to the Bali dicks!

The point here is not whether she had or didn't have cannabis. The point here is that CANNABIS IS NOT MORALLY WRONG, AND DOESN'T HURT ANYONE. Everyone should be allowed to "transport" cannabis. Should we ban WATER just because INHALING WATER CAUSES DROWNING?? NO. Should we ban surfing just because some people drown and some are eaten by sharks? NO. Should we ban cars and other vehicles just because sometimes they crash and/or burn? NO. Should we ban fast food just because some people become addicted and get fat and have heart disease from it? NO.

It's all about choice. Anyone ever seen the "SWIM AT YOUR OWN RISK - NO LIFEGUARD ON DUTY" Sign? There should be a global effort to inform all people that Cannabis is a "swim at your own risk" type of thing. If you are responsible with it, and take precautions to avoid accidents, YOU WILL BE OK.

I see what's happening

Dec 9 2005, 12:13 pm

They are getting punked by the unjustice systems that be...

Acting like they don't support marijuana in order to get her out...

Sigh, the truth needs to be spoken.

LEgalize it.
