Street Prices of Cannabis, Ecstasy and Cocaine at an All-time Low

The price of cocaine, ecstasy, cannabis and other drugs is at an all-time low, clearly indicating that efforts to stem the spread of illegal drugs on Britain's streets are failing.

The data, based on a survey of more than 2,300 people last year, shows that cannabis resin sold for an average of �43 per ounce, down from 2004's figure of �45 - and a big drop from the 1994 average price of �120 per ounce. Even at this low price, the profit margin for the dealer remains high, at 169 per cent.

The annual survey of drug prices, to be released by the charity Drugscope this week, shows how prices remain low.

Cocaine, sold for around �44 a gram, is one of the less profitable drugs, with a profit margin of around 95 per cent.

Britain's continuing "pill-popping" culture, particularly in its clubs, is indicated by the falling price of an ecstasy tablet, which is usually bought for less than �3.

Amphetamines are also down in price, and cost an average of �9 a gram - yielding a 237 per cent profit margin.

Heroin was one drug that went up in price - from �38 a gram in 2004 to �58 a gram last year. Its profit margin more than doubled, to 152 per cent.

Illustrating the economies of scale underpinning the demand for drugs, dealers selling ecstasy tablets for less than �3 were still able to pocket �1.50 a pill.

There are a number of factors involved in what is rapidly becoming a "buyer's market", according to drugs counsellors. The decreasing purity of some drugs is one reason for the fall in prices, as dealers import drugs and then adulterate them with other, cheaper chemicals in an attempt to hang on to their profit margins.

Another more fundamental reason for the steady drop in prices is that traffickers are flooding Britain with illegal drugs, because demand has increased.

Home Office research shows that one person in 20 aged between 16 and 24 has used cocaine or crack.

CUT-PRICE HIGHS: How drug prices have fallen since 2000:

HEROIN: dropped from �70 a gram to �58

COCAINE: down from �65 a gram to �44

ECSTASY: fallen from �9 to less than �3 a pill

According to the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), Britain is one of the world's most profitable narcotics markets for gangsters, despite a long-running "war on drugs".

Soca aims to stem the flow of heroin from Afghanistan and cocaine from Colombia. It estimates that up to 35 tons of heroin are brought into the UK each year.

As a resident of Scotland i'd just like to point out.. The only reason Ecstacy is becoming cheaper is because the quality is far worse than it used to be.

Where you could buy a pill or two for 9 to 15 quid each before, you now have to buy up to ten for 20 quid to get the same effect.

At the moment, the majority of the ecstacy being sold in my area is pathetic and usually full of speed which in my opinion is absolute filth.

i got arrested in my mates car friday night , they found 2oz cocaine , 300 ecstacy pills and half oz blueberery cannabis. Nothing was mine as i dont deal drugs but i felt i had to admit to to something so i said the weed.
We got took police station, strip searched me n all that and put me in a cell, police believe i am drug dealing like my mate but obviously they dont care and didnt believe me.
They searched my house that night and my car to find bits of cannabis everywhere to total upto a large amount of cannbis and scales (which i use to make sure im not ripped of). I was left in the cell till 1.00pm saturday and i had an interview with several police n solicitors, i didnt want to drop my mate in the shit so i dint make him out to be a drug dealer but obviously denied ownership of the coke n pills and i dont take the stuff (as i am completely against the stuff you r a faggit if you take it). I am now released on bail (on suspicion with intent to supply class A and Class B) havent got contact to my mate, and have to report back police station in august.
This has ruined my weekend, i mite go jail for nothing as i am completly innocent, to police it looks bad finding a lot of bud but i keep telling them how much i smoke even my mum did but they dont beleive me.

Yeah. I live in Chicago and the price for bud is always different everywhere you go. In the suburbs it's like $20-$30 a gram (for not shitty weed), but in the city,I've seen people sellin for like 10-$15 a gram, same type of bud. I only smoke good shit. i've heard a lot of ?'s about prices in different areas. I live a few minutes outside of Washington DC, in Virginia and prices around here are...100 for an ounce of mids, 300 for headies. 80 per gram of blow, 700 for an ounce. 300 per gram of Heroin (85-95% purity). 10 per hit of LSD, 450 for a sheet (100 hits). mushrooms go for 25-40 per 3.5g, and 180 an ounce. PCP is 20-25 per dipper. ecstasy goes for 20-25 a pill on the street, and 8-12 in bulk. ...no idea about meth or opium prices tho

I have never paid more than 2.50 for a pill in the UK. It bugs me how people can serve sentences in jail for possessing a drug that is statistically less dangerous than alcohol and tobaco. fact. The government and teaching around drugs has to be truthful and need to stop over playing the dangers. Drugs will always be around so long as there is demand. Maybe we need to rethink are policies on the topic and update the drugs misuse act based on scientific evidence.

Back of the envelope: I take 10 mg Adderal (aka d-Amphetamine) for ADD per day. Just refilled legally 30 days x 10 mg = 300 mg for $50. UK street price for the same amount is $5.50 (9 pounds/gram). It's 10 times cheaper to buy illegal than legal even when you have a perfectly legitimate medical use.

Think about what that means: what other economic market can sustain 10x price difference? Only totalitarian societies (e.g. Soviet single seller, planned economies) have ever done so, and then at quite a cost.

Clear proof that the basic economics of prohibition inevitably doom it.
