Netherlands Bans Magic Mushrooms

The Dutch government is banning the sale of all magic mushrooms after a series of high-profile incidents involving tourists who had taken them.

The decision will take effect within several months, said a spokesman for the Dutch justice ministry.

A major Dutch producer of the psychedelic mushrooms said he stood to lose millions of euros as a result.

The Netherlands is famed for its liberal drugs policy, with marijuana openly sold in licensed cafes.

Magic mushrooms, more properly known as psilocybe, contain the psychedelic chemicals psilocybin and psilocin.

"We intend to forbid the sale of magic mushrooms," said justice ministry spokesman Wim van der Weegen.

"That means shops caught doing so will be closed."

Currently in the Netherlands the sale of dried magic mushrooms - in which the psychoactive chemicals psilocybin and psilocin are stronger - is banned but fresh mushrooms are allowed.

This is because it is more difficult to ascertain how much of the chemicals fresh mushrooms contain. But Mr Van der Weegen said this was exactly the issue.

"The problem with mushrooms is that their effect is unpredictable. It's impossible to estimate what amount will have what effect."

Calls for a re-evaluation of the drug grew after a 17-year-old French girl jumped from a building after eating magic mushrooms during a school trip to Amsterdam in March.

Other incidents involving the drug have included an Icelandic tourist jumping from a balcony and breaking both legs and a Danish tourist driving his car wildly through a camping ground, narrowly missing sleeping campers.

"It's a shame, the media really blew this up into a big issue," said Chloe Collette, owner of the FullMoon shop, which sells magic mushrooms in Amsterdam.

She said all the incidents had involved magic mushrooms in conjunction with other drugs.

Murat Kucuksen, whose farm supplies about half the magic mushrooms on sale in the Netherlands, said he stood to lose several million euros as a result of the ban.

Users of fresh mushrooms experience effects ranging from giggling fits and intensification of colours, lights and sounds to, more rarely, hallucinations. Negative effects can include vomiting, and anxiety.

anyone who jumps off buildings while trippin on shrooms must have had mental issues, i've seen people break down and cry and become angry because they couldn't stop their trip, but shrooms make you analyze your life, its an out of body experience for a few hours, and they know that prior to taking the drug

the bitch was stupid for jumping. I have ate so many shroom I was seeing car floating, huge blobs of floating around, building growin and shrink, I even blacked out and would wake up still talking and tripping about 3 minutes later. The mushrooms didn't make her jump. There is a story behind it nobody is telling.

If you read more articles on this across the web they say this girl had a previous history of mental illness or some problems with depression...someone like that should be doing no drugs/alcohol and things like mushrooms are definitely the last thing someone should be doing. I bet this was a suicide under the influence rather then thinking she could fly..

It could rejunvenate Aging since people are going to strongly trip from it. Feeling the intense fear of Aging with powerful stimulants inside the body would probably re-write your Genetics, your Dna Codes. I did indeed read it. I was posting from my experience in traveling there, and elsewhere.Posting in haste however.
The sterotype worldwide is that of the arrogant loud-mouthed Americans.
I probably should have phrased it, "Probably, mostly,but not noted...
Were getting disparaged alot of late in other parts of the world.
Some justified, some not.
Part of the problem is that when we travel to more progressive landscapes as Amsterdam. We tend to give the impression that "We are just here to get high man".
Dont care about your customs,culture etc. Where is your McDonalds at?, I cant eat this!

The Dutch folks oughta grind shrooms to fine powder and just mix it with herbs. They'll be super high, feeling the influx and they ought spread the wealth of "the experience". There is nothing wrong with a good trip. Grind the dry mushrooms into powder, that would be drizzling and awesome; just find more creative way to consume magic shrooms under the nose of Dutch authority. Besides, there are plenty of people who could use a nimble trip. Just triple height of the high for higher maintence bodies. There are a population of dudes that need their boost. I can speak for them. Sometimes, it is amazing that there will be a day when substance distribution has become forbidden and that day is apparently today.
