Portland Will Vote to Legalize Marijuana

Mon, Oct 15, 2007 10:48 pm

Petition signature collecting starts next Friday. 27,255 signatures are required by July 7th to get Measure 8 on next year's ballot.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland, Oregon could be the next major U.S. city to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. Measure 8's ballot caption explains that it, "Assets criminal penalty exemption for possession of marijuana in Portland."

The measure would allow possession of less than an ounce of marijuana for people over 21. Possession of less than an ounce at this time is a misdemeanor.

The ballot measure would not decriminalize pot, activist Parker Bell told reporters, it would legalize it, which means that the measure would bring commerce and money into it.

The opponents of Oregon's medical marijuana program, passed twice by voters, have been very active in recent weeks and months preparing legislation that could overturn the voter endorsed law. Police in Oregon have also been busy conducting grow raids all over the state. The DEA also moved into Oregon, bringing more pressure and scrutiny on the program. Since moving in, the federal agency has tried without success to subpoena the names and personal information of a number of OMPP patients.

It is widely suggested by anti-drug organizations that medical legalization laws are a front for proponents of total legalization. Now Bell is going to try to see what Portland voters think about exactly that, though it is not clear if it is a direct reaction to increased police intervention.

Portland would not be the first U.S. city to remove pot from the crime dockets, in fact there are about a dozen, including Oakland, Seattle and Denver, which have passed similar measures.

But in Denver, people quickly learned that their own mayor had no apparent use for it. He quickly reminded voters that marijuana was still illegal under state law, and they would still be arrested for it, in spite of the new city law.

So now you have city laws being passed that states won't recognize, and state laws being passed that the federal government doesn't recognize, as in the case of medical marijuana.

Opponents of legalization say it is a bad idea to legalize marijuana because of the message it sends to kids. Others contend that the children of peaceful people who smoke marijuana should not be denied their parents because they were arrested for possessing and smoking a natural substance people have used for thousands of years.

Petition signature collecting starts next Friday. 27,255 signatures are required by July 7th to get Measure 8 on next year's ballot.

A real cause

Nov 4 2009, 10:54 pm

legalize it for the sake of the people with brain cancer. the real reason for legalizing it. people are only voting yes so they can get it easy for their own non medical related needs such as getting high, which shouldnt be the cause of legalizing it. the real cause should be to help the sick not help the druggies who dont know what the hell to do with their life. VOTE YES TO HELP OTHERS

I hate to say it, but I've gotten to the point where I believe that voting has NO effect whatsoever on the government. You honestly think a corrupt government takes these figures into consideration. they do whatever THEY think is right no matter what the public believes. they do whatever THEY think is better

getting low in denver

Oct 19 2007, 1:42 am

Its true the euphoria about the law we passed in denver last year was shot down by local fuzz, but we are still fighting. The local election question 100 would make Marijuana the lowest priority for law enforcement in the city. Its not perfect, but it is a start, now if we could only start doing this on a national level. Vote YES on 100 Denver!!

god, I'm sure am glad I was born in California (or as our governator would say, "Kollyfourniia, arogh@#@! get to the choppa!".) damn, only one state away its like going back to the eighties. When I was a kid, I didn't care what drugs were. I had junk food and video games, nintendo, genesis, super nintendo etc, etc. I've been to Amsterdam too on my honeymoon, and its completely normal over there, the dutch rule! And you thought wooden shoes were the next best thing.

I spoke to the Federal Government and they said "fuck you too "

fuck the federal gov't

Oct 17 2007, 9:42 am

fuck the people who say "for the children"
fuck the people who like to take away our freedoms
fuck our shit for brains president
fuck the police
and fuck people who think their way is the only way. marijuana has been used for thousans of years in almost every culture and nothing bad has happened. if the dumb-ass federal government cant see that legalizing pot would give them much more money to combat drugs that really are destructive like heroin, meth, and cocaine than they should be replaced by inteligent leaders. GET OUT AND VOTE, IF YOU DONT YOU LET THE GOVERNMENT MAKE DECISIONS THAT FUCK US ALL

Didn't children in the Kentucky 4H clubs raise the nations hemp seed supply durring WW2, you know the big one.?
Seems that those children survived the experience.

oh shit...

Oct 16 2007, 5:41 pm

...not the "sending the wrong mesage to the kids" again!! The "kids" in this country are unable to think for themselves! That's when you need to worry about your rights, when they are protecting the fucking kids! That's going to happen to the internet if the feds have their way, they already have the "drug war" protecting the little fuckers and it ain't doing any good, in fact it makes them more likely to use and sell drugs and pot. Oh well, you all know that line. The rest of the population is clueless.

I had a epiphany once .
They last a lot longer when you fed and water 'em regular .

marleys ghost

Oct 16 2007, 3:22 am

i just had an epiphany. the federal government supplies a handful of people with medical marijuana. yet when states enact medical marijuana laws, the feds claim jurisdiction over states rights. this is a violation on civil rights on a federal level. the supreme court has heard a case for states right on this issue, and ruled in favor of the feds. so any legalization for medical marijuana based on a civil rights standpoint,on a national level would have to go through the executive and legislative branch.

Im glad to see these kind of initiatives going on. I am heavily involved in the push for medical marijuana in Michigan and am invested in all pro marijuana organizations. But, i feel that we need to preach decriminalization and not legalization. I believe in medical marijuana and i personally used marijuana until a recent run-in with johnny law. But full legalization does not rub me well. It leaves to the state the means to overtax this wonderful drug and to a corporation the rights to synthesize it and take away from the clandestine growers. Everyone uses the argument that "the gov. could tax weed and make money from it" like it is a good thing. If they are going to spend the last 50 years denying us a naturally growing plant and persecuting us for our use of it, why should we let them take our money for it. Within the idea of decriminalization marijuana is simply left out of the books. Not legal, not illegal, just like a plant should be. Instead of legalizing we must form a regulatory organization that would ensure that marijuana was not being sold to minors and that the quality of sold marijuana is legitimate. If we are going to end this prohibition we must do it on our terms. "Weed the people"

Aww Shucks!

Oct 16 2007, 2:24 am

A measly misdemeanor ain't no crime anyways!

Okay, we'd better keep it repressed though. You know, for the kids!

I don't know. Go ask Alice! Feed you head!

These laws might not be honored by the state of federal government but they are symbolic chunks out of the wall of oppression. Just as they slowly chipped away at the berlin wall all those years ago, so shall we.
