Philadelphia Police Say Marijuana Costs $100 Per Joint
Tue, Jan 15, 2008 11:24 am
Today, police laid out 16 pounds of the stuff they said they confiscated from a high-level dealer who supplied the suburbs…
Police put the value of the marijuana at $812,000. On Tuesday, as the probe continued, investigators seized 12 pounds of hallucinogenic mushrooms worth $614,000 and more than $439,000 in cash, police said. [Philadelphia Inquirer]
Really?!? Let's do the math. $812,000 / 16 pounds / 16 ounces / 28.3 grams = $112.08 per gram. That's a hearty marijuana joint for $112. The same formula finds them valuing the mushrooms at a whopping, and oddly similar, $113 per gram.
Just look at High Times Magazine's Market Quotes for marijuana to see that the highest street prices come nowhere close to these wildly false numbers. A gram of the very best pot can fetch $25-30, usually less. It is literally as though they calculated the value of the seizure and added a zero at the end (actually that's currently my best guess as to what happened here).
This is what we get when reporters simply pass along claims from police regarding drugs. Law-enforcement's lack of expertise on certain drug-related matters, combined with their incentive to exaggerate their own achievements, creates an obvious imperative that the press seek to substantiate such claims before offering them to the public.
This announcement from The Philadelphia Inquirer that marijuana costs $100 per joint is just a perfect example of the media's ongoing failure to provide responsible coverage of the war on drugs.

But, I almost never get a response when I call them on some bit of stupidity. This is one of those cases. I've heard nothing from the reporter.

On another note, to whoever it is that keep saying to use a ctrl key combo to copy and paste. Copying is not a problem. I can copy from any source, even the comment edit page.
However, any time any ctrl key is pressed (I tried this on three other PC's as well as an Apple) a window pops up imediately on hitting ctrl (or the Apple key) saying "Ctrl key pressed!" and there it sits, doing absolutely nothing else until that window is closed. One never gets to the "v" to complete pasting.
This is NOT a problem with anyone's computer. It is a problem with how the style sheet os implimented.
I accept that this is not a "conspiracy". It's just bad programming, if it is not supposed to be there.

The way I figgure it...if the war on drugs is effective, then there are less drugs available. If there are less drugs available, then the price goes up. If the war on drugs wern't effective, I would still be paying the same price a bag as I did ten years ago.
Wait, now I get a discount for buying in bulk. Yay America!!!!

I'm pretty sure he knows that already . Anybody waiting for advice from you to make their CHOICE has a problem anyway . And it is a CHOICE .
I also wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a reporter to acknowledge to you , that he needs to pay attention . Most likely , he is saying "who is this dumbass and why does he feel I owe him anything ." I'm sure you are somebody somewhere .

IF you are a regular toker, it could be weeks before you can give anything approaching a "clean" urine. Are they going to wait that long? And you have to live in fear that one day you know they are going to test you again, without warning. That's sheer torture.
I know you like the job, and more importantly with your family, you absolutely need it. I can't agree that they are great people to work for, or they would not be torturing you with such a pissant "offer".
I used to suggest that fellow tokers just not take the piss tests. Better to be able to explain that you were fired because you refused to give up your rights than that you got fired for having illegal drugs in your urine.
Now, I'm not so sure that not testing is always a legitimate choice.
Having a wife who is recovering (we agreed years ago that I could talk freely about it, in order to help others), I understand the further pressure on your life from the drink. Please don't start drinking again.
I wish I could tell you to keep toking, but that would jeopardize your job.
Pperhaps you might think of looking for other work. It is not too hard to find decent jobs that do not piss test. Many Fortune 500 companies have stoppped testing because they realized that they were losing the best and brightest to a retarded policy.
I have not heard back from the reporter. I know he read the email, as I got the confirmation of delivery and receipt upon read return. I don't believe the newspaper made an error, other than totally accepting everything the piggies said without question.

I recently had to take a (witch hunt) random pi$$ test at a job I've been at for 4 going on 5 yrs.
I had a + result. I told the company that I work for that I wasn't going to stop smoking and thats that.
Well they really are great people to work for and cut me a deal, I just have to give them 2-3 clean urines and they will be off my back until another random or an accident causes me to go again.
The thing is this, I have a wife and 2 small kids who depend on me for support.
I was ready to risk it all to stand up for my rights.
I am a former heavy drinker who's life was in shambles (as a drinker) now I'm doing better then ever before. When will this government open it's eyes and relize when they take jobs from honest, hard working folks they are destroying lives and creating criminals?
I don't know what I would have done if they would of told me I was fired, but I did know this, it would of been something that would receive media attention, (nothing violent) I'm not that kind of person.
I wouldn't go shoot up the place or anything like that, just something so people will know what happened and how Marijuana Prohibition is destroying lives..Thanks to all who took the time to read this.

For those who read this, and feel Marijuana should remain illegal, do me a favor please,

I posted this once before, and got laughed at and since I’ve already got my foot in my mouth I figured, people can only laugh just so hard. I think it’s a good idea and I think it will work, I hope you do too. I don’t have the connections or voice to get it started. If it could be announced, with conviction, to a large enough audience it will take a on a life of it’s own! Isn’t it time we did something besides acquiesces to their rules and play the voting game sham? It’s peaceful, it’s legal and there is not a damn thing they can do about it or, once started, stop, without an ending prohibition first!
Do you remember last years TV show, Jericho that was about to be cancelled? The fans got it renewed by bombarding those who cancelled it with peanuts, after the last line of last seasons show. What if we mailed millions of bags of peanuts to the white house? Lets freak out some politicians!
Here are the rules:
1) Make the 'return' address the same as the 'send to' address. This forces them to deliver because they can't return the package to it's origin. If the white house refuses to accept the peanuts, the post office must contend with it. Which means the white house has to deal with it anyway.
2) Make the package half a pound, no more than one pound. We want lots of packages, not one big one!
3) Write in big letters 'END MJ PROHIBITION!' on the package.
4) Use ONLY the US postal service. Bringing the postal system to a grinding halt will help make the point! No point punishing UPS and the like.
5) Write letters to the editor, pass among friends, and make news with vast amounts of peanuts, whatever we can do to get people mailing peanuts.
6) Ignore any protests of how terrorists can make use of it. Politicians have been ignoring us without concern for our safety. If they force us to live in fear, them let them join us at the table and share in the meal they prepared!
Any ideas you can add?

Steve Kubby, ran as Libertarian candidate for Gov of CA. Very public about his cannabis consumption. Fled to Canada when the piggies went after him and Michelle Rainey.
Sister Somailla (dang, I have to check the spelling of that) is a co-complainant and medical marijuana researcher specializing in lupus and cancer research in CA. I think she spent some time in jail for it.
Todd McCormick - already spent time in jail. He wrote a book on growing medical grade cannabis.
I am in an advertisement in HT for being a sponsor of the Mayday Marijuana March. I posted some of my other credentials.
BTW, about ten years ago, when cops tried to bust me for pot and ran up against my intellect, realizing they had no bust, decided to assault me. They threw me on the floor and jumped up and down on my back. As a result, I have so many protruding disks and other damage that I am in constant pain, except when I can toke up.
Fuck the police. What's the worst they can do? Kill me? attack me again? Instant martyr. Fuck the police. In my entire life, I've only met a small handful of cops who were not worth the dirt they were standing on. Fuck the police.

Even more irresponsible is accepting what police say about teens in emergency rooms. The statement is not supported by a fact check of hospital admissions. It also ignores that there is no such thing as a marijuana overdose. Someone having a bad reaction is not an overdose, except in the minds of law enforcement, who have a vested interest in exaggeration and lying.
I don’t really expect a reasoned response, let alone a correction to the article. Just be aware that you make yourself a public example of drug war stupidity when you parrot police fantasy without question. Although a correction would be a nice step toward correcting drug war idiocy.

High Times, which is read all over the world, has a much higher rate of publication than the Philly Inquirer. You’ve just made a complete world wide ass of yourself and you are being ridiculed world wide for your apparent stupidity. Count yourself as extremely lucky that the Inquirer does not attach a comment section to the stories, as do other reputable newspapers. You’d be getting torn to shreds right now. I guess that explains the lack of a public comment section.

I am the president of the Delaware Cannabis Society, and have been since 1968. I am one of the patients in the Class Action Lawsuit for patient protection languishing in the Federal District Court, and I am also featured in the book by Joan Bellow, the Benefits of Marijuana (Richard S. from Delaware). Perhaps that lends a little credibility to what I have to say on matters regarding cannabis.
I just read your story, Police seize high-potency marijuana, arrest 2 men.
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/breaking/news_breaking/20071128_Police_seize_high-potency_marijuana__arrest_2_men.html
Where is your head and where are your fact checkers?
You said, ”police laid out 16 pounds of the stuff” as well as, ”the value of the marijuana at $812,000” . Since you wrote that without pointing out that that makes the street value of a single joint $112 per gram, and High Times Magazine has a market report on Philly putting the price of AK47 or even indoor hydro that can be even more powerful, at a street value of about $25 to $30 per gram at the highest, I have to ask why you published the police report without questioning their highly inflated valuation?
The fact that you also write that, "He wasn't selling this stuff on the street level. People would come and buy pretty large amounts of marijuana." only makes the statement about the price even more ridiculous, since it is clear that none of those buyers would be paying anything like $112 a joint.
Your failure to do simple fact checking, and point out the difference between police fantasy and street reality and actively participating in the obfuscation is a clear demonstration that you lack credibility. It paints you as both a semi-literate reporter and as irresponsible. That does not even begin to address that a responsible reporter would point out that without prohibition law, the criminal profit would simply not exist.

It was so funny to read the amount of money marijuana was valued at. One case from B.C. gave a value of over $200,000.00 for a pound of pot, while another valued a pound and $3,500.
There is absolutely no protocol for pricing marijuana in court cases it seems. Whatever sounds good at the time goes.
