Mavs' Howard Admits Offseason Marijuana Use

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Dallas Mavericks forward Josh Howard admitted on a radio show Friday that he smokes marijuana in the offseason.

The wide-ranging comments came in advance of Dallas' Game 3 against New Orleans in the Western Conference quarterfinals. The Mavericks lost the first two games on the road, but won Friday night, 97-87.

"Everybody in the media world and the sports world knows NBA players do smoke marijuana," Howard told The Michael Irvin Show on the local ESPN affiliate.

"Most of the players in the league use marijuana and I have and do partake in smoking weed in the offseason sometimes," Howard said. "I mean, that's my personal choice and my personal opinion, but I don't think that's stopping me from doing my job."

Howard was averaging only 13.5 points on 26.9 percent shooting through the first two games of the series after averaging 19.9 points during the regular season. He had 18 points on 5-of-16 shooting on Friday.

The 28-year-old Howard said during the interview that Mavericks owner Mark Cuban or head coach Avery Johnson hadn't said anything to him about the marijuana issue.

"I think they of me as far enough as a mature person and as a mature adult to handle that," Howard said. "I'm not going to put myself in a position to fail as far as that type of situation. If that's me, that's what I'm going to do when I'm by myself on my personal time. I'm not trying to get involved with anything or anybody else that's going to bring me down."

It's not known if the NBA has the ability to suspend Howard for his comments.

Under the NBA's drug policy, players have to undergo four random tests every season from October 1 to June 30. A player who tests positive for marijuana use isn't subjected to a suspension until a third strike. Upon a first positive test, the player is required to enter the league's marijuana program. For the second such violation, the player will be fined $25,000. A third positive test results in a five-game suspension. Any subsequent violation, the player will be suspended for five games longer than his immediately preceding suspension.

Did you know that the NBA didn't start drug testing for weed until after Michael Jorden retired?

I was wondering if anyone might know where I could find something on the web that came on mtv in the early nineties? I haven't been able to find it. Their were old guys in suits, and one old guy says "you claim mtv as your source" and as rump shaker is being played in the background, another old guy says "boom-a-boom-a-boom and a zoom zoom?" and another old crotchety guy said "whats it mean?" I might have it on a cd somewhere, but haven't found it yet, and its kind of bugging me...:)

the reason they want to keep track of all this is cause there the best athletes in this sport when you think of it there supposed to be like a healthy icon for kids and young adults growing up... its not right for a kid to brag about there favorite player smoking Maryjane....and the who other thing is the media using and writing things like this article to spark hopefully a hug controversy about athletes and drug us...

i hope you get shot in ya 4head

I don't think the league should be able to do anything about his comments... look at Rasheed, he's been busted on I-5 right outside my house like 3 times, damon stoudamire, well the whole blazers team at one point was known as the jail blazers for there countless appearance in court for marijuana misdemeanors... at least he didn't admit to shooting himself up with steroids right??? if anything wouldn't non-partakers consider that a competitive disadvantage?

Pot is not a performance enhancing drug. I don't understand why it's tested for in professional, college or high school sports.

He's a Mav, but his heart is with the Nuggets and Blazers.

this just goes to show you that drug testing all together is wrong in the occupational field.. if your capable of doing your job without letting whatever substance use of your choice is affect your ability to perform, then really whats wrong with it?? it's done on personal time and i'm pretty sure i'm free to do what i want with my free time as long as its not hurting anyone else..this is america right??
