Malaysian Court Sentences 2 Thais to Hang for Marijuana Trafficking

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: A Malaysian court sentenced two Thai citizens to death by hanging for marijuana trafficking, a lawyer said Tuesday.

The Kuala Lumpur High Court convicted Masoh Daloh, 35, and Romuelee Yakoh, 46, on Monday of trafficking 75 pounds of the drug, said their lawyer, Naran Singh.

The men were arrested in 2002 after they were found in a car with 34 slabs of marijuana, the lawyer said. The judge ruled the defense failed to cast reasonable doubt on the prosecution's contention that the Thais intended to sell the drug.

Both men appealed their convictions and sentences but no date was immediately scheduled for a hearing.

Malaysia's use of the death penalty has come under renewed attention after human rights group Amnesty International last month accused Malaysian authorities of being secretive about executions.

The Southeast Asian country has a mandatory death penalty for various offenses including drug trafficking, murder or crimes using firearms.

Malaysia has hanged more than 200 people, mostly its own citizens, for drug trafficking since capital punishment was implemented for the offense in 1975.

The country's Bar Council has campaigned in recent years for the penalty to be scrapped, describing it as barbaric, inhumane and an insufficient deterrent.

The Malaysian government has denied covering up details of executions, and insisted that the death penalty remains necessary to curb crime.

Ya now, the U.S. has at one point...sentenced a man to death (don't think he has been executed yet though) for selling heroin and other hard drugs so a death sentence in the U.S MAY not be too far off if the drug laws on Canibus doesn't change soon.

Shit, if McCain becomes president...we may just be killed for possesion one day...let's hope not...

Yes, the death sentence may be somewhat harsh but if you know the penalties and still smuggle the who is to blame? I feel that if you know the sentences before you smuggle then carry on regardless, knowing the consequences then you cannot complain or cry "its unfair" you did it to yourself.

I think that the death penalty should be given to sex ofenders, pedophiles and serious preditorary criminals. Anyway, i"m off to smoke a spliff.

Sad state of affairs when 2 men have to die for selling and or smoking a plant, the US is not far off “case and point” I was just released from Federal prison (DEA operation Raw Deal) Yes I had my life turned upside down for Steroids and was busted with a small amount of smoke, my family and I have been turned inside out for personal choices “no violence” The Steroids and smoke have caused me to be a prisoner for 5 years of my life not to mention all my money, home and vehicles have been taken. It’s time to make changes! BTW I have never hurt a person in my life, well ya myself according to the Feds .

Actually Reaper Grim may be right.
If you get caught, your going to die, period.
But if you kill the police, you have more of a chance to get away, and if you get caught, well hey, either way your going to die, so atleast you tried, and you got corrupt police off the street.

Sir, this does not help. You should also do a little research into why Amerikkka's Asian colonies do these sorts of things to their own people, who they also force to work for next to nothing in sweatshops making cheap goods for the American market.
You're right when you say "there is a reason you're all living in third world nations and squandering around in poverty."
But you're wrong about the reason. After these countries were "given their independence" by the European governments, the new governments are still using a European style legal system instead of a justice system and the system cynically referred to as "representational" democracy, i.e. parliaments, presidents, congresses, senates, etc., instead of real democracy. The people in those countries have no say over what happens, just like people in America really have no say at all. The stupid racism makes me think that you're some kind of police agent provocateur.
