Spy in the Sky Helps to Root Out Cannabis Farms

Fri, May 30, 2008 2:20 pm

Source: chesterchronicle.co.uk

Two detached Chester homes raided by police were cannabis factories being run by Chinese illegal immigrants. DAVID HOLMES reports on the battle against drugs which has moved into pleasant suburban streets.

CHESHIRE police are using their spotter plane fitted with thermal imaging cameras to find cannabis factory heat spots.

They pick up a rooftop glow from the heat generated by the powerful lamps used to grow cannabis.

The aircraft is periodically tasked with looking out for such premises and growers have been caught this way in the past.

Such properties stand out particularly at this time of year when most people have their heating turned off. Corroborative information would be required before police could consider mounting an operation.

Cannabis factories can also come to the attention of police because of incidents such as accidental fires caused by tinkering with the mains electricity supply or by strange behaviour reported by neighbours or landlords.

Informants within the criminal fraternity also provide intelligence.

Police say that many cannabis factories are run by illegal immigrants who are “paying back” those who helped them into the country.

Many are said to have shelled out up to £20,000 to enter the UK with debts repaid by working for those who made the arrangements.

They feel beholden to their fixer as they do not have the correct papers, may not speak the language and have no other way of making an income.

However, links in the network are kept deliberately weak and individuals left in the dark about the identities of their contacts so that they are unable to help police if arrested.

A cannabis factory was uncovered in Vicarage Road, Hoole, last year, where mature plants were seized with an estimated street value of about £90,000.

Residents contacted police with concerns about the smell coming from the address where people, believed to be of Chinese origin, were living.

A court warrant giving permission to search the address was obtained within hours.

Plants, growing equipment and drug paraphernalia were among the items seized but nobody was ever caught, although forensic evidence flagged up one individual already known to the police.

It's completly possible to induce flowering with two fluro's, but entirly impossible to be satified with the end result. You will be wasting your time and it will not be worth the chance you are taking by growing an illegal plant.

I am not sure about basements because 99% of homes in Florida do not have them and i've never lived in a home with one, sounds like a great idea tho. In the comment I posted the idea is to insulate a room within another room to prevent the heat reaching the main room, while keeping the main room cool it acts as a shield/forcefield of cold air to hide the heat of a the grow room. (This works like a dream)

More later Perhaps...right now those Mahi Mahi are callin my name...

"Corobative evidence was still needed before the cops could launch an operation" That said, the fly overs seem to provide a starting point and reason to sniff around if they think the house is to hot.
Good comments for cover (:

I appreciate hmmmm's time to write soo much about the subject. Thank you for giving everyone a solid way to protect against IR detection on a large grow op.

My questions are... Wouldnt the simplest large grow op room be situated in a finished basement (already insulated and drywalled)? And wouldnt having the room in the basement remove A) The need to worry about windows and prying eyes and B) only having to insulate between the ceiling of the basement and the floor on the first floor?

Where I live, most basements have poured concrete floors and concrete block as walls. This is all underground. So why would it be necessary to insulate the concrete if it is surrounded by the ground? And if you have a two story house with airconditioning wouldnt the cold air in the two floors above the basement conceal the heat signature of the grow room as well?

P.S. Thank you for confirming that flowering with flourescent lighting is a WASTE OF TIME! Can you say shwag??

How do I mask my heat emissions?
Note: Small grows (under 2000w) would probably not emit enough heat to warrant the effort or expense.

Note: Reducing grow room temperature will reduce heat emissions; however, the grow room will still be warmer than surrounding basement rooms.

This technique creates a false wall to contain cold air. Interlocking rigid foam panels prevent hot grow room air from contacting and warming house walls. Cold air is blown into the gap between the foam and the walls for maximum protection. The wall?s exterior will appear ?cold? to an IR camera, indicating a negative for internal heat.

· "Partial room" (insulate exposed walls only)
· "Room in a room" (entire rooms are insulated)

*Floor. Concrete foundations absorb heat readily. Build a sub floor to raise the entire grow off the floor.

*Walls. Use interlocking 1.5 or 2? foam insulation along all exposed walls. Place the insulation 1-4? away from walls, fit foam panels from floor to ceiling (some cutting may be required), and blow cold air into the gap. Seal seams and corners with tape. Cover walls with Mylar to reflect heat back into the room.

*Windows. Windows are essentially uninsulated, so you must fill the gap with insulation. Draw the curtains/blinds, add black poly behind, then add insulation.

P.S. Flowering with fluro's is a waste of time

You can flower with Flouro's. Your yeild wont be as much, but its better then having this kinda shit happen to you.

And its still debateable whether or not LED lighting is good for flowering stage. HPS is still the best in my opinion for flowering

You should only veg with flouro's not flowering

THERE ARE ALSO L.E.D. LIGHTS ON THE MARKET NOW THAT PRODUCE NO HEAT AND PUT OFF THE FULL LIGHT SPECTRUM OF THE SUN. FANTASTIC FOR INDOOR GROWING.

Most technologies like this can just detect heat coming off of surfaces of the house..( which, by the way, require a search warrant in the United States [Kyllo v. United States, No. 99-8508] ) a room that's insulated fairly well (especially over windows) MIGHT suffice.
I've never heard of that heat shield the other poster mentioned... sounds like a good investment if your appropriately paranoid ; )

Grow with Flouro's.
Its called a carbon filter.

They should have used the thermal shield from the 2008 Grow Guide issue of High Times. You should protect your invest from prying thermal imaging eyes by using this in any grow room utilizing "hot" lamps. And duh, always use an odor filtration system if you live in a suburban area.
