Cannabis Shown to Help Repair and Regrow Damaged Brain Cells

Scientists link cannabis use with a damaging "shrinking" of certain parts of the brain, which is remarkeable for a number of reasons, not least of which as recent as 2005, scientists were hailing the benefits of cannabis, and its ability to repair damaged brain cells. Quite the connundrum?

A team of Canadian researchers reported that cannabis use appears to spur the development of new brain cells in rats and to have further beneficial anti-anxiety and anti-depressant effects.

While it has been known for more than 100 years that cannabis does no discernible damage to brain cells, only in the past ten years have reports demonstrated a direct neurological benefit.

The results support the anecdotal claims of thousands of patients, contradict decades of anti-marijuana propaganda used to prop up the foundering Drug War and suggests more social benefits to be had by legalizing cannabis for adults.

Because many social drugs, including opiates, alcohol, nicotine and cocaine, have been shown to suppress the formation of new brain cells when used chronically, cannabis had been suspected of doing so in a form of “guilt by association.” However, researchers in Israel found that cannabinoid drugs are helpful in cases of nerve damage and trauma. The US Department of Veteran Affairs found similar results working with veterans suffering from PTSD in the 1980s and suppressed the results.

Now, a team at the University of Saskatchewan department of psychiatry in Saskatoon, led by Xia Zhang, may have found evidence the drug promotes new brain cells to form in the hippocampus region of the brain, which reduces anxiety and depression.

Zhang and his colleagues wrote in the November issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation that cannabis appears “to be the only illicit drug whose capacity to produce increased ... neurons is positively correlated with its (anti-anxiety) and anti-depressant-like effects.” The paper was posted online at the Journal’s website.

Rats in the study were injected twice per day for 10 days with HU210 -- a synthetic form of a cannabinoid found naturally in smoked cannabis. This is equivalent to “a high dose” of smoked cannabis, Zhang said, but given the variables of potency and cigarette size, he is not certain how many joints it would take for a human to match the dosage.

there is way more evidence that proves that smoking marijuna "shrinks' the brain such as your memory and fluid intelligience....

you are all foolish to get so excited about a few dozen experiments that prove that marijuna helps grow brain cells in the smallest part of the brain... the hypothalamus which controls your anxiety; there are thousands of experiments on marijuana that have all concluded negatively but none of you know that because you are not doctors with the proof right in front of your face as a matter of fact what do you do? work at a fast food restaurant or unemployed? you hear what you want to positively because you are deeper satisfying your inner wants...

that is why everyone who smokes marijuana regularly are "blah" all the time... your hypothalamus is being sent into overdrive....

get a life!

I know alot of people who might die of shock if they actually read research reports and articles like this.
But no they think just because it's a non-prescription drug it automatically has absolutely no positive effects when in reality the positive outweigh the negative

Well, at least I had a pertenant comment to go along with my quip. Mr. Lives in a cold dark cave with a colman lantern, a pile of weed, and a deep sense of self loathing troll.

I kid I kid. I do wonder if any one in alzhiemers / dimensia research has picked up on this though. This year there will be 8 million victims of that disease in the US alone.

Imagine something that could be part of a theraputic, AND patent treatment for the disease, and OMFG we can grow tons of it.......

never gonna happen
or will it?

Im sure he will lose sleep tonight b/c you dont believe him, "to below".
Hoooraaayyy, another news piece of university/medical advancements in cannabis that wont make a damn in the world?

Well, then why dont you email a link od the web published paper from the proffessional journal it was printed in to everyone you know?

Go tell it on a mtn. go sing it in the street. But dont sit there, joint in hand, and say "well there's nothing i can do *puff". Just spread the word, spread the information from the acedemic and proffessional sources that are irrefutable. Or sit there and eat chips....what ever choice you make, its the right one.

if what you say is true , why do you want somebody to approve or give permission ? Its against the law ..
so is :
speeding ..nobody does that on a daily basis ?
lying to a cop ... never happens ?
Cheat on their tax returns ... ?
Lie in court ....?

If what you say is true ...it shouldn't matter.
Why allow somebody to dictate your actions ?
The Gov. makes a big deal of it because people like you make a big deal of it .
hint : i personaly don't believe your story anyway .

Someone please tell the law makers in New Mexico about this so they can pass medical marijuana for mental health purposes, instead of only for patients who are dieing. Why have they made death a requirement for medical marijuana? I want to be comfortable in my skin and have a peaceful life while I am still here and so far cannabis has been the only way for me to do it. I am sick of all the pharma drugs they put me on that are only to sedate/control me, and have a million horrible side effects. I just want to enjoy what is left of my life with a smile and a light heart.
XOXO,
Stoney

As both a brain injury victim and a disabled veteran, where the hell were these results that the Army didnt see? I have seen a noticable change in anxiety control and depression. Now they've found out it heals the brain, thats a bonus side effect.

So?

Jun 10 2008, 4:09 pm

I'll bet we won't be hearing about that little known fact on Faux News or CNN.

We heard about it when it "shrinks" your brain after smoking 10 J's a day for life!

Ah well, peace.
