Thousands of Marijuana Plants Removed from Sequoia National Forest

Raid and removal of plants were a combined effort of Federal and State agencies.

SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST — More than 26,000 marijuana plants were removed by the combined effort of Federal and State agencies over the past week from public lands located above Springville. And officials are saying that in addition, there is plenty of environmental degradation caused by the illegal activity.

On July 31, officials found and removed more than 7,000 feet of irrigation tubing, more than 2,000 pounds of garbage and hazardous waste, more than 200 pounds of fertilizer and two gallons of pesticides.

Additionally, a large amount of vegetation had been cut to build infrastructure in the camping area.

The materials were dismantled and removed by the restoration team to prevent the growers from returning to the area.

According to a news release by the Join Information Center of Tulare County Sheriff’s Department, growers can live in remote locations near the sites for months at a time and officers have come across camps with exercise facilities, tree houses, barbed wire fences and numerous firearms. The camps often contain cooking and sleeping areas within view of the cultivation site. Some of the camps have tents, hammocks and sleeping bags on the ground and some have been found with large overhanging tarps.

The news release went on to say that numerous bears and other animals have been killed over the past few years by marijuana growers.
In addition, herbicides and pesticides are used to remove competing vegetation and gnawing rodents.

The chemicals, human waste, and garbage often end up in rivers after winter rains, the news release said. Irrigation systems remove water needed by fish from small streams, and soil compaction in the gardens lead to erosion.

In 2007, more than 760,000 illegal marijuana plants were seized on California’s Federal lands managed by the Sequoia National Forest, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Bureau of Land Management.

After watching the story of this on CNN, it was really funny how the head narc spoke of the danger to the enviroment the operation caused. Do you think the enviroment would be better off if industrial hemp was not outlawed? How much more old growth forest would we have?. An incredible statement, by another brainwashed individual.

herbicides& pesticides???????
what kind,,i have always been of the assumption you dont need these for cannabis growing
garbage left???
if this is true i am quite disapointed in who ever was camping there ,,cannabis growers should be ones who help heal the earth,,not be like other humans and leave crap laying round. wonders how much the officers stuck in their pockets during cleanup
wonders if the officers tried smoking the leafs while there at site

Here's a quote from the DEA website

"Truth is, marijuana is not just a plant. Marijuana smokers use the dried leaves of the plant called Cannabis sativa"

And they claim the pro cannabis culture is spreading lies and misinformation. Hope you guys enjoy smoking those "dried leaves".

Yet another great example of people, totally ignorant about cannabis, stealing tax money to run a bureacracy that bleeds the US of all the funds they can squander.

It's funny they would list "enviromental degradation". I guess they forgot that the made the number one fibre in the world , hemp, illegal, and encouraged the world to do so , in the name of synthesized fibre.Manufactured by Dupont. This issue just gets stupider by the day. What a pack of lies, I guess they think everybody is stupid.

Legaleyes hits the nail on the head.
Less damage to National forrest/Parklands.
Plus for the revenue minded local government. They could issue Sq foot(indoor) Sq yard (outdoor)annual permits to grow at home. Perhaps an electrical inspection and small fee, for everyones safety.
Forget taxing the weed. The revenue from the sales of grow supplies would add billions in revenue to state and federal coffers.
Not to mention the savings from enforcement/ incarceration costs now squandered.

Taxes

Aug 3 2008, 11:13 am

ok i believe your numbers are good but i though i would add what the government would be making if they put a 20cent tax on it they would make it legal and sell it. They would have made $1,123,200,000 off it that is 1.12billion dollars if they made it legal. We wouldn't have any econoic problems and just think the government would be making like 1000x that because of the property they have under their hands

the government in america is just a group of fashish straight edge emo pussies at are greedy and don't want to get their hand dirty if they legalize it with the problems with it (that don't exist) the only problem is it's not legal i personally think it's time for a revolution and a greater change in the way a governemt should be ran here in the united states

sorry to hear that the forest got shitted on..but uhhhh if the other naturally forest green stuff was legal and allowed to grow say....in the back yard.....then maybe this shit wouldnt have happend right..of course not... we have to be so secretive about growing naturally occuring plants around other naturally occuring plants.. america isnt so natural are they...

Mmmm... Let's see...26,000 plants...(I COULD use the governments numbers to figure this up but I think I will just keep in within ...say...100-yards of reality) @ 3 Lbs. a plant, (its outside in what is probably pretty good soil w/ irrigation, plus I'm not counting the slash, the trim, the trunk, the rootball, the growing pail and the tractor I drove in on like the government might accidentally figure in when telling the media how much they "rescued" from the streets) that would come to 78,000 lbs, now let's see if you get about 16 ozs a Lb that would get youuuuuu..... 1,248,000 ozs. DDAAMMNN!!
Okay, as we all know prices can be all over the place depending on where in the country you might hail from, what time of the year it is among other things but lets just say...for on oz the going is $300.00, okay? So in a perfect world the potential income for this crop would be ( as an old businessman this is normally where I would subtract the overhead, the cost of the irrigation pipe, food and drink for the people helping you maintain 26,000 plants, the loss you occur while everyones sits around the table smoking joints and cleaning & processing, the gas it takes you to get to your plants, the baggies for sales and any other expenses you might incur, but, you were getting the water free that you should be paying for just like the rest of us and though it might not
REALLY even out I'm zeroing out that column).... Drum roll please.......$374 MIIIIILLLLIIION 400 THOOOUUUSAND dollars ______________Sorry, I went into a little bit of a coma.

My question is this, How much do you think State & Federal would pull in in taxes for this amount plus be able to help these people with a real medical need and dare I say........people like me who have no real medical need but still on occasion enjoys staying home with my "Baby" and having a beer, a bowl and a movie, thats right, I said it right out loud in front of GOD and everybody!!!!

I'm just saying!

(My biggest fear is that I F'd up the calculation. LOL, If I did, post the correct calc, I'll acknowledge, then we can move on. But, ya get the point I'm going for, right!)
