Deleted Photo Sparks Fears DEA Hiring Mercenaries

When a California medical marijuana dispensary, Organica Collective, was raided last Thursday by agents of the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency and local police, the Los Angeles Times ran a dramatic story on the incident, accompanied by a set of photographs showing the raid and its aftermath.

According to the Times, witnesses described the DEA agents as “removing computers, medicine and money, and using a steel cylinder battering ram to get into the upstairs bedrooms.” When they left four hours later, all that remained was “trash, counters strewn with open and empty glass jars, piles of receipts thrown on the ground, upturned couch cushions, bits of marijuana on the edges of counters and an ATM with its doors torn open and emptied. … An outdoor vegetable garden had plants uprooted, along with marijuana plants removed by the agents.”

However, one particular photograph from the Times story has drawn more attention than anything else. That picture, which has now been widely reproduced at blogs, shows a long-haired man, wearing a Blackwater tshirt and with a pistol at his belt, passing a box marked “DEA Evidence” to other agents participating in the raid.

Blackwater, a private mercenary army often employed by the US government for security services and by local police forces for training, has drawn widespread criticism for its shoot-em-up tactics in Iraq and has recently aroused suspicion by its establishment of a private intelligence service and its growing role in global drug enforcement.

A medical marijuana website may have been the first to draw attention to the picture, noting, “We’re used to the DEA calling in help from various federal agencies and local law enforcement. But I guess none of their usual buddies were available yesterday because from the picture below, which appeared in the LA Times today, it looks like they had to resort to calling in Blackwater.”

The next day, Tim King of Salem-News.com gave wider distribution to the story, writing, “Are members of a disputed mercenary killer group now working with the DEA? A photo from the LA Times shows proof of one of two things; either Blackwater members are now working for the Bush White House’s Drug Enforcement Agency, or this semi-illegitimate band of rogue federal cops have worse discipline than any of us ever imagined.”

The photo has since been taken down by the Times, but it has continued to circulate online. Although there has been no previous suggestion of a Blackwater role in domestic drug enforcement, the single picture was sufficient enough to set off furious discussion at both left-wing and libertarian message boards and blogs.

I could go either way on this one, yeah he could be a mercenary questionably hired to do a police action on a target they had no reason to believe (that I can see) warranted, mercenaries, a swat team, or anything of the like. Just a warant, some cops to move people, and an evidence team would have done the trick.
Then again he could just be the kind of macho D-bag that wears blackwater T on the job while busting up a target in force to collect evidence (same kinda target described above, all they needed was evidence team and all that).

What I DO know is like "Where's The Badge?" Said I'd be interested to see how the other officers were garbed and if there are any more shots of this guy where we could definately see if he maybe had a belt badge or something.
Either way like alot of stuff the DEA does, its fishy as hell at least in the ethics arena if nothing else.

IF blackwater is working for the dea and
IF there are grounds for a law suit because of the actions of blackwater
The dea is liable for those actions as blackwater WOULD be working at the behest and under contract with the dea .
Don't think the dea doesn't already know this . This is one of the main reasons I don't believe it . It would be different if the pictured showed him with a gun to somebodys head or actually arresting someone .

Blackwater has immunity from prosecution in Iraq if they accidently or otherwise kill an innocint civillian there.
Many possibilities for similar immunities working drug war.It creates legal nightmare to attempt to sue government that hires them. Neo-con tricks and schemes.
It is a war after all-eh?
Just a thought

I don't get it ?

Aug 13 2008, 2:32 pm

blackwater working for the dea ? I understand any and all ramifications IF thats true . But what I don't get is this :
1) ya'll act like its a big secret thats been uncovered . Is it ?
2) Does this mean people will get caught that normaly wouldn't? I don't think so myself .

ps : I saw a bust where on of the cops was wearing a Remington Firearms tee shirt . Does that mean the dea has hired Remington ?

These macho brainwash victims that make their way into the bowels of tyrannical banking cartel strong arm agencies, love wearing tough-guy regalia. It seems like "Blackwater" shirts are the new barbwire tattoos.

These pricks don't have to be Blackwater, they just want to show off how macho and programmed they are.

But it also should not be ignored, that this nation is a fascist police state. The thugs running around with legal guns will do anything for money and when private industry conflates with government (Federal Reserve Act, 1913), say goodbye to freedom and liberty. The tyrants in Washington are most definitely looking towards the private sector to do their dirtiest work.

To goose64: I have an I love (pot leaf) shirt, and I deffinitely love (pot leaf).

Otherwise, I agree with mature, the only fact I see in this picture is a shirt with Blackwater on it, this being the information age taking something and making it anything you need it to be is always a possibility.

You poor thing . Jumping to conclusions because somebody wants you to , like a little trained monkey . Let me put your mind ( or whatever is left) at ease .
The only fact this article addresses is a guy wearing a blackwater t-shirt during a drug bust . Thats it . Everything else is conjecture ( that means guessing ) aimed at people who don't know any better , such as yourself .
Now this MAY turn out to be true , and it could just as easily go the other way . That IS a fact .
Now run along and play , look both ways before crossing the street and let the grown ups talk .

What concerns me is the DEA RECRUITING done on local commercials on tv. It just means more of a police state. Google it. That in its self is startling. Who care if they hire blackwater or not. The fact is they are hiring, and there is alot of hungry people who will go for the job no matter if the job is moral or not.

Paranoia is contagious . If this was such earth shattering news I'd expect some one with some credentials to address the subject . But all I see is OOOOh Blackwater could be & OOOh Blackwater might be , OOOh we is victims.
If it is true , I say so what ? The DEA is going to get you NOW 'cause they use Blackwater ?
Play your cards RIGHT and you won't see the DEA or Blackwater anyway .

ahem...

Aug 9 2008, 1:05 pm

Did I say clean shaven? no, I said haircuts. as for your suggestion that some cops go undercover with gangs and need to look different, why is this guy helping move evidence instead of doing his undercover work, if that is what he does. and one more thing, this "a shirt is just a shirt" buisness, like I said before, why would anyone buy blackwater shirts, blackwater is one of the most controvercial private security companies today, you think he just wears it on the job because he likes them or out of irony? not to mention the other evidence that PSC's have been used in the drug war already, this isn't unheard of at all. In anycase if you choose to believe that a man wearing a blackwater shirt and no badge isn't a blackwater employee that's your decision, however, I believe that the evidence clearly points to the conclusion that he is infact a blackwater employee. people will have different interpretations of things like this from time to time, so I won't push you to see things my way, even if I'm right, I just want to point out the facts that lead to my conclusions, which is what I was doing.

not all police officers need to be clean shaven 24/7 some do infiltrate gangs and need to appear to be anything but a police officer, as for the shirt, well its a shirt and im pretty sure People have shirts that say I LOVE NEW YORK, but do they really love new york?

IF that is you real handle, who said anything about old ladies? I was talking about the fact that the police and the army both require haircuts to prevent the ol' "pull their hair and slit their throat" trick, it's SOP. So considering this guys hair, it's more likely that he works for blackwater, not the police.

dear john

Aug 8 2008, 11:10 pm

Aug 8 2008, 6:00 pm

Actually, It does add up . The dea doesn't always wear a uniform . This t-shirt really means nothing . I'd have found out more info before writing the story myself .

where's the badge?

Aug 8 2008, 5:06 pm

He isn't wearing police uniform, or a swat team outfit, or DEA gear, I don't see a badge on his belt, the only offical thing he's wearing is a gun belt and a blackwater shirt... So, what, is he just a really big fan of blackwater? and is it "casual dress code" day at the police station? also, don't they make police cut their hair so it can't be grabbed during a struggle? doesn't quite add up.

Breaking into an ATM which is a banking machine, and can be connected to the FDIC, I think it is against the law to break into these machines. I wish someone would start a company to be raided on purpose and film what is actually being said. these fake ass DEA helpers...is it ok to kill them if they raid your shit, because there not a fed nor a cop, it's a vigilant jerkoff who is getting paid. I understand the rational and paranoia but anybody can buy a black water teeshirt . Just google blackwater teeshirts and look at how many people are selling them . Does that mean the DEA isn't using them , no . It also doesn't mean that they are . Slow news day ? ...maybe

note : Blackwater is also a training facility where law enforcement personnel get training ...... Naww , that would be to simple and makes to much sense .

umm

Aug 7 2008, 9:13 pm

I'm wondering what it takes to make someone join a ate group like the dea. Is it that they are just hungry and starving? Is it that they have loved ones that needs the money for an operation? Or is it that they're just hateful people who love to inflict harm on everyone they see? The amazing thing about the picture is that the guy LOOKS like an ordinary guy. I sure wouldn't want to be in a dark alley when he or his friends were there. I think he's the type who would have no compassion on anyone, if he would take away medicine from people who are suffering. May this war end soon.
