Is Doctor-Prescribed LSD and 'Shrooms on the Way?

New indications that illegal hallucinogenic drugs like LSD and psilocybin could become credible prescription medicines some day.

It might sound far-fetched, but just a decade ago it seemed unlikely that the prohibited and mildly hallucinogenic drug cannabis would become a mainstream pain-killing medicine.

But it is happening: Cannabis pain-killing pills and sprays are being developed to help people with multiple sclerosis, cancer and Aids.

Now some scientists and psychotherapists think more powerful psychoactive drugs like psilocybin, found in 'magic mushrooms', could have a future as medicinal agents for a number of conditions.

In the US, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved, but not funded, a pilot study aiming to see if the euphoria and insight of a mild psychedelic 'trip' can ease the physical and emotional pain experienced by thousands of terminal cancer patients each year.

Charles Grob, Professor of Psychiatry and Paediatrics at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Centre, California, and lead scientist on the cancer-psilocybin trial, said: "There is great potential. A significant patient population may gain benefits from these treatments."

Professor Grob will be one of the first scientists in 25 years to administer psilocybin to a person in a therapeutic setting.

He wants to see if people's lives can be improved if psychoactive drugs are used under carefully controlled conditions.

Past success

In the past it seemed to work: in the 60s, cancer sufferers reported less anxiety, a reduced fear of death, better moods, and surprisingly, even less pain in the weeks after treatment with LSD, which is similar in structure and effect to psilocybin.

So, what will happen during a 21st century psychedelic therapeutic session?

The subjects will lie down wearing an eye mask to screen out distractions and headphones pumping in gentle music to fully immerse them in their journey.

"We are going to let the patients guide their own experience by reacting only to their needs," said Professor Grob.

"We are there to hold their hands and talk if they feel the need, but we will not overtly attempt to take it in any spiritual or religious direction. It is up to them."

The rationale says it is better to let the drug gently lift the veil, divorce the association between mind and body and let the patient enjoy the full-on experience as they wish, than interfere in a way that may be incompatible with the patient's psyche.

UK perspective

Could this ever cross the water? In the 50s, 60s and 70s, Britain and many European countries were active centres of psychoactive drug research.

Dr Kate Law, of the charity Cancer Research UK, said: "With full, informed consent, we have no problem with it in principle.

"These patients are adults and people make their own choices. It is right that we look at these chemicals with the same stringent standards as we do for other drugs.

"People shy away from the fact that other powerful drugs like heroin are used when caring for cancer patients, many of which have side-effects of their own."

However, Dr Law said Cancer Research UK will only support this type of research if there was an analgesic effect -- and the preliminary results suggest the overall procedure did not confuse or harm the patient.

Could the drug experience provide the patient with a greater delusion and a more fantastical escape?

Would it allow patients, perhaps already in denial, to become even more withdrawn, hidden, aloof even?

Dr Ken Checinski is a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists and senior lecturer at St Georges Medical School, London.

Balance

Although he does not represent the RCP, he says his opinions may be typical of many psychiatrists. He says it is a question of balancing the benefits and the risks.

"In terminal care the patient has a right to be pain free, but also has a right to go about their business in the usual way during the final weeks of their lives.

"It's unacceptable to be made psychologically unwell during this period.

"But most drugs also have a medical use -- amphetamine and cocaine derivatives, opiates, tranquillisers and now the cannabinols -- so there is no reason why we shouldn't consider using the serotonin agonists (hallucinogens).

"However, governments should provide funding for this type of research, not vested interest groups."

The scientific use of mind-altering drugs has often been controversial. But Professor Grob and his scientific allies have fought long and hard for a reconsideration of the hallucinogens as serious medicines.

A not-for-profit collective of like-minded scientists, groups like MAPS (the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) believe outlawed drugs like MDMA (ecstasy) and psilocybin have a better chance than conventional treatments of successfully managing many conditions.

Credibility established

A similar study involving psilocybin and the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is nearing completion at the University of Arizona.

And an MDMA (ecstasy) trial for the counselling of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) victims is finally underway after a bureaucratic bad-trip with red tape.

"We are re-opening an area that has been shut down for 25 years," said Professor Grob.

"A couple of groups have established credibility through the formal channels. It may take time but it's possible."

Nevertheless, more state-tolerated than state-sponsored, MAPS and their academic friends know that the eyes of the authorities and a wider scientific community are upon them.

The study is funded by the Heffter Research Institute.

A friend who thought they were a potatoe chip? Does he know the dude He thought he was a glass of water, and the dude who thought he was an orange juice? They got spilled when someone touched them. It is funny that people everywhere seem to know these people. I have never ,personally, known anyone who went into a catonic state of thinking they were a food product. And how does anyone know that is what they were thinking? Food products don't talk:) Atleast, I hope they dont'. Bad tripps do come for kids who take the datura. No'ah taka tha datura. Is bad. Unless you like being poisoned, and displaced.

sounds like somebody below has a personal problem. why assume that when a person doesnt necessarily respond to the topic at hand that he or she is automatically uneducated and respond with such criticism and negativity to the hightimes community. i agree that sometimes there is those few who argue about dumb shit in the comment section and it can get a little verbally abusive in nature to each other but who really gives a fuck lol just ignore it and move on. leave a comment that you feel is relevant to the situation and peace, be gone. maybe the next person that comes along and scans the comments will gain something or respond to something you have to say. all im saying is why cant we all just get along rather than feed into the negativity and respond with the same negativity that your making an opinion of yourself. besides sometimes the experiences that are given are quite funny anywho as for the LSD and Shroomz and psycho drugs so to say, we all know, well some of us know lol that these drugs much less any "drug" has its positives and negatives and i do agree its not for everybody but i do believe we should have more consideration from our government because there are too many ailing people who need more than just an FDA approved side effect you know and they have been doing too much damn research to not have considered it already. i think they already know for the most part what is possible from this consideration but have invested so much into the FDA that they dont want make many changes as well as wasted so much money on other BS such as wars and etc. my opinion is all drugs should be considered under guidelines and supervisions and only marijuana should be completely legal. and everything we know thats positive and beneficial should be exposed to everyone especially the critics.

i do aqree that lsd and shrooms arent exactly for everyone, however i am really happy to hear that scientists are at least considering this. i truely belive that it broadens your mind and is the first step to spiritual healing.

i understand that a lot of people post in response to what other people post in unrelated conversations and stuff, but do you think its any wonder that the cannabis movement and the psychedelic movement can't seem to gain traction when we have people in 'our' community posting mindless drivel. i am so tired of scrolling down after i read a story and in the 'comments' section there's always a lot of empty blurbs, profanity, and foolishness. people who post on high times make all cannabis/entheogen users look uneducated and unmotivated. i would've liked to have commented on the story about shrooms and lsd in pyschiatric research, but i was too blown away by the inane rantings of the people who have way too many drugs and no intellect. peace. cannabis and shrooms are not for everyone, timothy leary said it himself.

I have two chronic illnesses and shrooms took away my pain COMPLETELY for the first time in my life. I felt like I was walking on air because my knees didn't hurt at all!

On acid, I felt slight pain, but not as much as usual.

Dude... "trippingsideways" wtf r u talking about? I was just sharing a story to compare perspectives, there are infinite perspectives to be viewed from every angle on every imaginable and unimaginable subject matter and there also isn't...so wtf dude. Books are just another perspective of someone else no matter how one sided or open minded. I only trip mabey once a year on special occasions, and I don't claim to "know" anything I can only share my view, communication is the key to the always elusive peace of mind body and soul..... or not. :]

HDOG, the overall idiotic nature of your comment pretty much destroys the entire point you were trying to make about doing loads of crystal and lsd and not being permanently messed up, because through that one senseless paragraph I was able to deduce that you are pretty messed up.

Good acid is also a strong pain killer, without the harmful side-effects. Mushrooms, well, I am not sure about them, but they sure do make you feel euphoric. I am in total support of this movement. Personally, I don't want to have to have cancer in order to get me some legal psychedelics, so I think I should move to Amsterdam someday. Hopefully before the depression gets into full swing...

I had a gram of crystal about 8 years ago and i litterally dosed about 5days a week for about a year straight! I didn't full out trip every day, but did just enough to get a great energy boost and great attitude.I dont feel that it harmed me in any great way, matter of fact it made me a more productive and inspired person.I'm willing to bet that in that year i did more lsd than probably anyone alive!!Now i'm 41 and still ticking!

Sep 11 2008, 3:52 pm

dude..."adnkc"
your story is pointless..
you may think you know what your talking about...
but you are fooling yourself ..doing acid for years doesn't mean anything or teach you anything . its all science .
depending on the environment and the dosage acid can be the best or the worse no matter who you are and how your body works.
like i said...read a fucking book. you wont learn anything except how the trip feels from dropping acid .. YOU MUST READ STUDY AND RESEARCH AS WELL AS EXPERIMENT FOR YOU TO FULLY KNOW WHAT THE FUCK YOUR TALKING ABOUT

Sep 11 2008, 3:47 pm

LSD wasn't made for no reason people read some fucking books
of course its beneficial if handled properly. Hoffman wasnt an idiot he was a scientific genius, so its only a matter of time before the rest of the world catches on

Sep 11 2008, 2:42 pm

Yea, i like how it began outlining the basic procedure that was being followed when patients were given LSD

"covered eyes with gentle music"

so obviously, its a VERY controlled environment, but what some people arent realizing it seems, is that you can take a small amount and NOT trip, which i do all the time. if you take like one hit, you just feel GREAT, and you dont even need to take that much shit.

but yea i have had many a bad trip, in fact 6 hours bad trip, THATS a schizophrenic breakdown, and for a month straight i was afraid to open my front door because of what could be outside.

but i got over it.

its just a drug, nothing more. but yet, nothing less...

Whats up with all of the stories of people dead after a so called "bad trip" ? I think that it wasn't because of the acid or 'shrooms but the person themselves causing the harm some people are just like that, and they don't have the mental ability to just "go with the flo". Also just like any thing else it is only good in moderation I bet most people that have "bad trips" just took too much, too much. I remember when I had a so called "bad trip" I was 16 im 27 now so when I think back on that intense night it went like this... My buddies and I went to the local friday night chill'n spot to party the night away as usual, what was unusual about the night was one of my buddies has several sheets of dancing condoms blotter paper lsd. Not a big deal we were all experinced. One of my other buddies had a QP of some good skunk buds so we all about 8 of us decided to make a night of it. So we all were smoking blunts and taking hits of cid, except that me and my friend with the skunk were taking alot more cid than everyone else cuz it was only a dollar a hit and he spent 20 bucks which is 10 hits a piece, and thats a fuck load when you only need one! So we poped in a movie to watch called "Belly" and ordered some pizzas from pizza hut. An hour later the pizza arrives and my friend with the cid offers me a piece of pizza which I gladly accept, only one problem, when I try to pick it up I can't so I look over to find my entire arm engulfed in the pizza melted in to it like it was one of the toppings. So I spun my arm around in the pizza until I managed to get me a slice in the meantime everything else in the room transformed in to a colorful psycadelic bevis and butt-head do america style peyote hallucination, and I was out side of my body floating around above myself, watching myself do things I was not in control of like run out side of the house with the blunt we were all smoking cuz I was over dosed with lsd! never went to sleep that night. lol. So just rember to go with the flow and moderation is the key. I have had plenty of good trips since that one that seemed bad at the time but opened my mind up to new ways of thinking about our shared reality. One last thing to address that potato chip story I have heard a lot of similar stories like I thought I was a glass of OJ and I would die if some one spilled me, now that sounds like a bunch of nonsense to me. lol :) also the pizza hut box had darth maul on it. what a trip.

Yeah right!!

when we can't get something safe like marijuana legalized in this country how are we supposed to get mind bending hard core psychedelics legalized? Course Salvia is legal and a 10x extract of salvia is the most powerful hallucinogen drug I have ever tried luckily it ended in about 10 minutes.

mushrooms might be a little too crazy for these people but i do believe that if taken in the right setting LSD can be a good thing for cancer patients

Sep 11 2008, 12:56 pm

if you have never had a bad trip on acid, then you have never done acid as a youth ..
walking the streets
doing normal every day things...

you must have took precautions and been in a safe and sound environment..

a friend of mine died on acid from thinking he was a potato chip, and that if anyone touched him he would break. someone punched his arm and he instantly had a brain aneurysm.
not something to play around with but if done the right way you will have the time of your life!!

Sep 11 2008, 12:29 pm

Now the opposite has happened to me never had a bad Acid trip, but I did have bad trips on Fungus. I even know someone committed suicide on Fungus. Then again the administration of psychedelics in controlled circumstances usually reduces the likelihood of "bad trips".

TymexPyres

Sep 11 2008, 12:19 pm

I have enjoyed both of these. I even cared quite for the salvia, while it was still legal. However, they had better be very precautious experimenting around like this. 100 hundred individuals may experience an emotional and spiritual journey, and then there will be those that have a schkitzophrenic episode and go completely psychotic. It is a very carefull balance, and one that you may not always be able to calculate. The pscilocibin would probably be the better on of the two to mess with, as it was usually a little more mild. I never had a bad trip with mushrooms. Acid on the other hand was another story. But, we would do it again anyways:)
