Passing a Medical Marijuana Bill: Good. Lame Michael Phelps Joke: Bad.
Thu, Feb 26, 2009 5:05 pm
After a bill dubbed the “Compassionate Use of Medical Marijuana Act” easily passed in the New Jersey State Senate Monday, Senate President Richard J. Codey tried his hand at some tired pot humor.
Upon declaring the passage of the bill, Senate President Codey picked up a telephone and pretended someone was on the other end speaking. He then hung up, banged his gavel and announced, “Um, excuse me, Senator Scutari [the bill’s sponsor], I just want you to know that was a congratulate, congratulating you, and it was from Michael Phelps.”
The bill, which is yet to be considered by the State Assembly, would give chronically ill patients legal access to marijuana. Nonetheless, Senate President Codey considered it an excellent opportunity for some shtick. It’s difficult to decide which is worse: the material or the delivery. Watch the video here and decide for yourself.

*UPDATE*
Kellogg's Brand Damaged By Dumping Michael Phelps
Dumping Michael Phelps over the now notorious photo of him taking a bong rip is not looking like the best move for Kellogg. Pot activists, who insist they make up a large share of consumers of Kellogg products, organized a boycott of the company. The boycott resonated with Kellogg customers to such a degree that when you called Kellogg, the first audio recording you heard was not about the nation-wide salmonella outbreak that had sickened dozens of people, but was a message for callers who were concerned about the company's relationship with Phelps.
The relationship has actually damaged Kellogg's brand. Silicon Alley Insider reports:
Out of the 5,600 company reputations Vanno monitors, Kellogg ranked ninth before it booted Phelps. Now it's ranked 83. Not even an industry-wide peanut scare inflicted as much damage on the food company's reputation.
