Poll Shows a Majority of Californians Support Legalize Marijuana

Tue, May 05, 2009 12:59 pm

Source: www.examiner.com

For the first time ever in a statewide Field Poll, a majority of state voters expressed support for legalizing and taxing marijuana. A poll released last week showed 56 percent of Californians support legalization.

Earlier this year, Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) introduced legislation that would tax and regulate marijuana in a manner similar to alcohol. The Marijuana Control, Regulation, and Education act (AB 390) would create a regulatory structure similar to that used for beer, wine and liquor, permitting taxed sales to adults while barring sales to or possession by those under 21.

“With the state in the midst of an historic economic crisis, the move toward regulating and taxing marijuana is simply common sense. This legislation would generate up to $1.3 billion in much needed revenue for the state, restrict access to only those over 21, end the environmental damage to our public lands from illicit crops, and improve public safety by redirecting law enforcement efforts to more serious crimes, Ammiano said. "California has the opportunity to be the first state in the nation to enact a smart, responsible public policy for the control and regulation of marijuana.”

The poll bolstered the call for legalized marijuana that has stirred since Ammiano introduced his legislation and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder said the government would no longer raid and prosecute legal marijuana medical dispensaries.

“One of the most respected research firms in the country has confirmed other recent polls and our sense of the groundswell that followed the introduction of AB 390 by Assemblymember Ammiano,” said Stephen Gutwillig, California State Director of the Drug Policy Alliance. “Californians are ready to end decades of failed and wasteful marijuana prohibition. Just as we led the nation in the compassionate adoption of medical marijuana, this state will set the standard for common-sense regulation, generating substantial new revenue for California and enhancing public safety.”

Though Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has said he would not sign legislation legalizing marijuana, the state's ongoing billion-dollar fiscal crisis is making the idea of taxing legal marijuana to raise revenue, while reducing the strains of the grossly overcrowded prisons, more worthy of consideration for other legislators and voters.

“We are seeing a real sea-change in public attitudes; public opinion has reversed itself; this year marks the first time that polls have shown a majority for legalization; the economic crisis is making people question whether it makes sense to spend more money on marijuana prohibition,” said Dale Gieringer of NORML.

Last month a San Francisco supervisor said the time had come for the city to consider legalization as well.

When something is regulated & taxed you can NOT manufacture it at your own home. Is it really that hard to understand? & yes there is a big difference between legalization & decriminalization.

ok, but I'm just sayin nobody, especially a smoker, should have a legitimate reason for us not to vape (burning is out, so that MassCop shouldn't advise on "smoking in the woods")!
And seeds at Home Depot, and you can bring your extra stash to sell at Walgreens (donate 1/2 to the terminally ill), and insurance pays for medical patients - just the commensurate $10 co-pay!
Which in no way takes away from the fact that you guys, cuz I've never seen a plant bigger than me except once (and guess what, Mom found that too) and HT have been keeping the weed alive. But I'm on my way, soon!

dontdoit - please tell me you're not a politician cuz that's the sound of those that want it illegal. Alcohol is poison, grain alcohol can make you blind/retarded/or dead instantly. How can you compare that to pot? It is legal to make you own wine or beer and drink yourself to death. It is your right.

Just as it should be your right to go down to home depot and get some of the best seeds on the planet. Made in the USA - imagine seeing that logo again? Legal is legal, don't know how you confuse legalize and decrminilize - there's no difference.

Naturally there should be some restrictions; for recreational use - no under 18 with a medical card, can't sell shit out of your house to walk-in customers but you can bring your surplus down the local co-op and sell it and pay taxes on it.

It's not wise to leagalize! Once all state's leagalize there will be NO more seed's getting through to the United States. It will be taxed therefore NO ONE can grow in there own homes anymore. Just like you cannot make grain alcohol & grow tobacco in your own home. It's just my opinion, but I believe the government will make sure you pay $10 for a pack of seedy assed joints. Please stick with working on getting marijuana DECRIMINALIZED.

It's about time someone used some common sense about dealing with our 40 year old out dated drug policy. If they would legalize marijuana alot of the problems that alcohol has caused will come to an end. Marijuana is alot safer than alcohol, it's a fact. 500k die from alcohol abuse every year, this number would go down if legalization of marijuana took place. It would create a whole new industry of jobs and put millions of people to work. LET'S TRY IT AND SEE IF IT WILL WORK. We've tried everything else, maybe it's time to try something new.

my feeling is that the percentage is higher than what is being reported if we all get behind it I believe we are closer to seventy percent, I am ready to vote, they should have done this long ago, people could show their id when buying their weed and it could be kept behind the counter.
people should not be allowed to smoke while driving or in public places like schools.
it has been many years since medical cannabis was approved here in cali and it is a fact that people who smoke cannabis have not ended up doing heroin or cocaine like the government wants you to believe when they call it a gateway drug the C.A.T.O. Institute did research in Portugal after cannabis was decriminalized there and there is plenty of evidence that cannabis users did not turn into killers or heroin users, enough with the lies, lets put this huge source of revenue in the hands of the state and let our american farmers grow this crop that could generate a number of other products such as biodiesel, paper, clothes as well as food for people from the hemp seed.

Here's good wishes going to the state of CA. Vote out the Governator and vote in legalization! Hopefully, the rest of the USA will follow once they realize the sky didn't fall in CA and it's making money instead of wasting money on an issue that won't go away.

Silly, conservative republicans whine and moan every day about spending money, but they don't offer any solutions. Here we have a money maker AND money saver for them (and for all of us) and they don't want it to happen. They're doing everything they can to screw up this country left and right.

The marijuana business will always exist. Tax it. Regulate it. Use that money for education or anything else you want.

Americans are done with this stupidity of prohibition already!
