Stimulus Dollars Fund Local Study on Marijuana

VANCOUVER, Wash. - A Southwest Washington psychology professor has received federal stimulus money to study marijuana and pain management.

WSU Vancouver Professor Michael Morgan qualified to receive $148,438 for his two-year study, which aims to determine whether the use of marijuana along with other anti-pain medications such as morphine provides better pain relief than either drug alone.

The grant from the National Institutes of Health is part of the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the economic stimulus package enacted by Congress and signed by the president in February.

"This research is innovative in the field," Morgan said in a news release. "Currently there are no other projects that are studying this chemical relationship using these parameters."

His project was picked because of "its potential to stimulate the economy and create or retain jobs within the community" as well as its likelihood of making scientific progress in two years, school officials said in a news release.

I CAN TELL YOU FROM MY OWN USE OF BOTH MORPHINE TYPE DRUGS AND MARIJUAANA THAT THE STRONGER DOSES OF OPIATE ARE BETTER TOLERATED WITH MARIJUANA., AS WELL AS THE FACT THAT LESS OPIATE CAN INITIALLY BE USED AND THE DURATION OF THAT DOSES EFFECTIVNESS IS EXTENDED.,THANKFULLY! BECAUSE OPIATE DRUGS ARE VERY STRONG AND DEBILITATING BY THEMSELVES AND EVENTUALLY DAMAGE IS DONE TO THE BODY AT A TIME WHEN HEALING IS SUPPOSED TO BE TAKING PLACE., I HOPE THEY LEARN AS I HAVE AND THEN SOME., I JUST HOPE FOR ONCE THE POLITICIANS LET THE SCIENTISTS HAVE THE LAST WORD NOW.

No. It has to be spent to find some reason to keep it illegal.

Well, in all honesty, I don't know what they're intention for the study really is. Lets all hope the intentions are good this time, but Its hard to believe that the warmongering &^$#@@@#! has any good intentions. But personaly, I am a forgiving person if the intentions are good.

In May, the White House launched what it called an 'unprecedented online process for public engagement in policymaking.' Brainstorming was conducted in an effort to identify ways to 'strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness by making government more transparent, participatory, and collaborative.' So, what were some of the top vote-getters? Currently near the top of the list are Legalize Marijuana And Solve Many Tax Issues / Prison Issues (#2) and Remove Marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (#3). For those who remember Obama's earlier Online Town Hall, it's deja vu all over again."

The marijuana facts that they present to the schools say marijuana causes more cancer then cigarettes and are addictive then them too.

I'm surprised these schools of ours don't have "facts" on how Santa doesn't deliver toys to bad children, or how there's no such thing ad space.

I only pray that the man on these studies don't spend all of the money we've given them just to smoke it all in one week, or WORSE: Lie there asses off about how marijuana causes cancer and makes you crazy.

No more lies please.

I reluctantly will also have to agree with hr210.

The feds have lost all credibility. To think the feds are protecting "us" is a nice thought, but the news of people wrongfully imprisoned tells otherwise.

who are they kidding please be sure to read the part where it says "Federal Money"
all they are doing is paying Mr Morgan to come up with more Bullshit and misinformation and lies about Cannabis, since when has the federal government funded an honest research program on Cannabis, let me guess, this would be the first time, the person doing the research is just being paid off to come up with already established crap the government wants you to believe about Cannabis, wake up every body if the federal government says:
"Hey every body it's raining!" don't get all excited and happy it just means they are taking a big fat piss on your head, if they were serious they would re-schedule Cannabis and decriminalize it, already we have proof and lots of research about the medical benefits and properties of Cannabis, Hey Mr Federal government stop putting non-violent american citizens in prison for smoking herb, how many people's lives do you plan to destroy before you realize that prohibition does'nt work, it did not work in the twenties and it sure as hell is not working now, our streets are turning more violent than ever because this stupid war on drugs, it is asinine to continue the same approach to the same problem and expecting different results. it's not working stop the war on non-violent american citizens for smoking herb.

Anyone who watches politicks knows that when governments say that they are gonna "study" somthing. It just means that they are gonna spend your money to to wear you out, and still do nothing that you are asking them to do.

Its a token jesture to make you think that they care.

Jun 2 2009, 9:03 pm

well maybe they will have like some kind of secondary research that isolates each drug's effectiveness at relieving pain by itself. but i agree with the poster below, what a waste of tax money for that main question to be answered. also, i hope they use more than one method for getting cannabis into the system, ie oral spray, oral consumption(brownie), smoked and vaporized. too many variables for them to truly isolate effectiveness with only $148,000. maybe the gov just wants to try to prove that the morphine derivatives are better than cannabis. couldn't hurt to know either way though.

This is probably the dumbest fucking thing ive heard of course weed and morphine together are going to provided better pain relief than either alone. I could tell you that without wasting my tax money. What they need to do it get someone to prove the medical bennifits of weed alone and show that shit to congress or anyone else who has a say so in the laws of our great country
