Top Anti-Drug Researcher Changes His Mind, Says Legalize Marijuana

For 30 years, Donald Tashkin has studied the effects of marijuana on lung function. His work has been funded by the vehemently anti-marijuana National Institute on Drug Abuse, which has long sought to demonstrate that marijuana causes lung cancer. After 3 decades of anti-drug research, here's what Tashkin has to say about marijuana laws:
"Early on, when our research appeared as if there would be a negative impact on lung health, I was opposed to legalization because I thought it would lead to increased use and that would lead to increased health effects," Tashkin says. "But at this point, I'd be in favor of legalization. I wouldn't encourage anybody to smoke any substances. But I don't think it should be stigmatized as an illegal substance. Tobacco smoking causes far more harm. And in terms of an intoxicant, alcohol causes far more harm." [McClatchy]
We've been told a thousand times that marijuana destroys your lungs, that it's 5 times worse than cigarettes, and on and on. Yet here is Donald Tashkin, literally the top expert in the world when it comes to marijuana and lung health, telling us it's time to legalize marijuana. His views are shaped not by ideology, but rather by the 30 years he spent studying the issue. He didn't expect the science to come out in favor of marijuana, but that's what happened and he's willing to admit it.
Here's the study that really turned things around:
UCLA's Tashkin studied heavy marijuana smokers to determine whether the use led to increased risk of lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD. He hypothesized that there would be a definitive link between cancer and marijuana smoking, but the results proved otherwise.
"What we found instead was no association and even a suggestion of some protective effect," says Tashkin, whose research was the largest case-control study ever conducted.
Prejudice against marijuana and smoking in general runs so deep for many people that it just seems inconceivable that marijuana could actually reduce the risk of lung cancer. But that's what the data shows and it not only demolishes a major tenet of popular anti-pot propaganda, but also points towards a potentially groundbreaking opportunity to develop cancer cures through marijuana research.
Over and over again, all the bad things we've been told about marijuana are revealed to be not only false, but often the precise opposite of the truth. So the next time someone tells you that marijuana is worse for your lungs than cigarettes, you might want to mention that the world's leading expert on that subject happens to be a supporter of legalization.

What I've also noticed is that too many of the comments from the haters are wrong. I mean, everything about it is wrong. Maybe if you haters could spell things right, or somehow become enlightened and gain the capability of determing the difference between the words "your" and "you're", I'd actually read your whole lamebrain comment. You haters say that marijuana makes us potheads and stoners dumb, when you yourself cannot even spell correctly. And I am 14. Whoa! See that? You just got "pwned", as they say, by a 14-year-old stoner.
You can kiss my ass, losers. You think I'm a loser? Well I have maintained a 4.0 GPA the whole time that I have been a smoker. I have been a volunteer of many organizations for the community.
Please, before you put that "lazy, dumb, stupid" label on every person that smokes pot, why don't you grow a brain cell and learn how to type right. Do a favor to the world. Thanks.

Hence my frustration to get this done, may be gone in a year, maybe 5, statistically 10 may be a stretch.

It's a basic guide written for Earth Friendly citizens of this planet, who want society to rule not Gov't. Sometimes it a necessary evil, but when they abuse that power, then they threaten all inhabitants of this planet. The guide also forewarns of that too.
Based on my analysis of our behavior for 200 years, he would not be very happy, and most certainly would have revolted before 1/2 of all the mammals were wiped out, 1/2 of all plants and insects gone, 1/2 of all the rain forests gone.
Change is coming. We have half of the legislation needed. 1/3 of the states. Another 1/3, and you have a national reefer-endum.
Glad you weren't charged as an adult, I plead guilty to a misdemeanor @ 18, sacrificing my fortune for the planet and pot. But, the Catholics call me a sociopath for not abiding by these Draconian laws, and politically the call me a Socialist.
I have tried to live my life by that man's examples. He is the only American I have complete and utter respect for evey single opinion he had.
No politicical affiliation, detests Organized Religion, advocated for the elderly, and less-fortunate, and detested slavery. But, after designing the means to unite this nation, create our government and society - we kicked him out(the anti-organized religion was his downfall). Typical American response. Intolerant mother-fuckers.
So, I'd say, your doing fine. Stay-the-course, you're right on target! We'll get this done very soon.
p.s. When he published Common Sense - it was like us sending a text to 500,000 and getting them all to vote 'yes' on getting a bunch of farmers to fight the most powerful military force on the planet.
You may also like The Age of Reason - when published he reached the equivalent of how many of us view the Super Bowl (30,000,000?). Tell your friend to stop scratchin.

I started laughing at a comment I made, and one of my friends roomates, who is on parole for statutory rape, as well as working at taco bell, for minimum wage, who I had just met for the first time said, "What, are you stoned or something?" in a very condescending tone.
I replied "Yeah, I'm always high.", as whenever I have free time, and/or are in social situations, I prefer to be high than not. I'm a stoner, I'm not ashamed of it.
He said "What a great way to live life... not."
I replied with "Well, I go to work every day." and then he said "High?!?" all rude, and I said "No" because it's the truth.
He then questioned me on where I work, and in what town, as if he didn't believe me. I'm a line chef in a high class restaurant, working full time, and making way more than minimum wage.
I always show up on time, sober, and do my job without any issue. I'm a successful musician as well. I'm also a certified genius, and I'm sure I could be making millions doing something else, but that's not the point.
The point is, I live my life, I am no detriment to society, I'm a working and tax paying citizen, as well as a very talented musician, and am a very skilled in Cannabis Cultivation.
The only "crime" I commit is the bullshit "crime" of possessing and being under the influence of Cannabis on a daily basis. Other than that, I'm extremely polite, and will go out of my way to help others.
It just pissed me off, being looked down on by some piece of shit sex offender, just because of the fact that I chose to have Cannabis be a large part of my life. I love the plant. There is nothing wrong with that. Some peoples passion is animals, and they work in zoos, and have many pets. Others like cars, etc... There is nothing wrong with the fact that my passion is Cannabis.
It's time that other responsible users like myself stop being treated like shit, and thought of as losers.

As to the police poser ...err... poster...
I spent 5 years working inside a municipal police department. Not one of the officers I ever worked with would agree with your preference for dealing with alcohol over cannabis. When was the last time you wrestled an abusive, out-of-control violent subject into submission who was under the influence of cannabis ONLY? Are you pulling out the notebooks from many years past to find such an incident?
When was the last time you tackled some drunk? Are you checking your watch? Between 80-85 percent of our calls for service were "alcohol related." We didn't even HAVE a column for "cannabis related" incidents. There weren't enough of them to justify keeping track.
The legal use of cannabis by responsible adults is long overdue. Now the Federal potmaster admits he could not sustain the "official manure spreading" any longer. Huzzah. Hope he doesn't lose his job for being honest.
When will the madness end?

This article is proof of the snowballing legalization movement that looks almost unstoppable now. The sooner the better I say, it's time the world woke up to the fact that this herb HAS NEVER KILLED ANYONE AND NEVER WILL, that this herb is HARMLESS, and that this herb has medical potential of unparalleled proportions.
PS: To the COP: Get a life mate, stop making yourself look like an uneducated ape and go and do some research on this supposed dangerous drug. I think you will find your world turned upside down.
