North Shore Republican to Propose Legislation Setting Penalties of Up to 25 Years in Prison for Selling 'Kush'
Mon, Jun 15, 2009 2:41 pm
Source: chicagotribune.com
U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk will call for legislation Monday that would toughen drug-trafficking laws regarding a highly potent form of marijuana, with penalties of up to 25 years in prison for a first-time offense.
The law would target offenders who sell or distribute marijuana that has a THC content exceeding 15 percent, which is between 5 and 10 percentage points higher than average marijuana, according to Kirk's office.
THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the main active ingredient in marijuana.
Drug dealers are increasingly cross-breeding plants to produce high-potency variants of marijuana, which are called "kush" in street slang when they have 20 percent THC, Lake County Sheriff Mark Curransaid.
Police have been turning up more of the high-potency marijuana in Lake County arrests, he said.
"When you amplify the strength of it, you are increasing the harm to the system," said Curran, who supports the legislation, which would amend a federal law. "They are more dangerous behind the wheel of a vehicle. It's not a good idea to have people that messed up."
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration has reported that kush sells for as high as $600 per ounce, creating the same profit potential as crack cocaine, Kirk said.
The Republican North Shore lawmaker said he plans to release more information during a news conference in Chicago on Monday, where he will be joined by representatives from the Lake County Sheriff's Department, the Lake County Metropolitan Enforcement Group and Waukegan Police Department.

sometimes I think countries make this stuff illegal just so a task force can be created and 1000 police and law enforcers can have a job.
lol... they probably sell the confiscated weed to cartels in mary friendly countries for a huge profit!
25 years in jail is the same sentence a murderer gets... go figure?

I think it was a racist guy in 1937 that 'taxed' marijuana which led to it being prohibited.
They legalized alcohol and went hard on the evil peaceful weed smokers. Saying how dare they get therapeutic value from a creature of God, without suffering and paying us for it? Thus we have all this great support for their ignorant, disrespect of the guidance of the earlier presidents of the USA.
It really pisses me off. Neither poppies, coca, peyote or marijuana are evil, yet these people want to eradicate these plants from the face of the earth, for what? Money.
You should take a look at the oxygen you breathe, and ask yourself what gives you the right to steal that breath from a creature that's millions of years older than you.

Congressman Kirk believes that elected officials should hold themselves to a higher standard because they have pledged to defend the Constitution and uphold the laws of the United States. A breach of law by a Member of Congress is a serious offense that should have serious consequences- AND HE WANTS TO LOCK UP HIGH GRADE HERB SUPPLIERS FOR 25 YEARS??- ADULT SMMOKERS WANT MORE OF THESE PEOPLE, IDIOT.
Better Relations with China
Congressman Kirk founded the bi-partisan U.S. China-Working Group in June 2005 with co-chair Rick Larsen (D-WA). Link to this website here. Much of this century's history will be written between Washington and Beijing. To protect American interests and avoid future conflict, The U.S.-China Working Group seeks to build diplomatic relations with China and to make the Congress more aware of U.S.-China issues. The group hosts regular meetings to hear from key business, academic and political leaders about U.S.-China issues ranging from trade and economic policy to space exploration.
Based on the findings from a number of these meetings, Congressman Kirk and Congressman Larsen introduced the U.S. China Engagement Act of 2006, H.R. 5199. This bill would increase the availably of Chinese language training for U.S. students, increase exchange programs between the U.S. and China, and promote U.S. exports to China. - AND HIS PET PROJECT, BACKDOOR $ MOVE & CAUSE OF THE GOODY TWO SHOES SMOKE SCREEN ON THE HOMEFRONT.
LIKE THE TEXAS COP WHO TASERED A 72 YR OLD WOMAN CAUSE SHE GOT LIPPY NEEDS NOT TO BE REMOVED FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT - SO DO THE "DUMB & DIRTY" POLITICIANS THAT USE OUR HERB AS A POLITICAL TOOL OF DECEIT.

The war on terror and the war on drugs are one of the same not a war againt on an Islamic threat. The islamic threat could be better labeled as the Middle East drug trade lead by a very wealthy man named Osama Bin Laden. The war is one drug cartel to another.
The people, all of us, we've been blinded and brainwashed by lies and deceipt brought to us by our wonderful media and government.
When Marijuana becomes leagal, the prices will drop very low. What we'll see is an increase in the amounts of Cocaine and Heroine, courtesy of the USA. It'll need to be increased to make up for revenue lost to marijuana sales.

They are more dangerous behind the wheel of a vehicle? Its not a good idea to have people that messed up?
How can someone who clearly has never taken a hit of weed tell me that I'm more susceptible to being "more messed up". How many people get "messed up" on alcohol everyday and drive drunk? Driving drunk and driving high are two completely different things. I would much rather drive after smoking a joint with "amplified strength" than take a few shots that had "amplified strength".
Its ridiculous to have someone who has no evidence or credibility on the issue to just throw out a quote like "its not safe to have people that messed up (cause of weed)". I mean come on. Its not safe to have a drunk driver on the road but its legal to drink. So therefore his argument, petty as it may be, is irrelevant.
I can stomach some anti- weed arguments but this is just pathetic. Just some republican spewing scary buzz words and spreading propaganda by saying "they're more dangerous behind the wheel."
Personally, I don't think that it safe having people who are so closed minded and ignorant around. They're the ones who are dangerous.

1) MONEY- You Mr. politician will financially gain by discriminating against Adult Herb Smokers because you will gain from?- Prison industry? Federal grants? A slush fund you are eyeballing? Kickbacks anyone, who is sliding you cash for spreading insanity you scum? HOW & WHY, WHATS YOUR ANGLE, LETS FIND OUT, WOULDN’T THAT MAKE YOU HAPPY.
2) SECURITY- Manipulating the Sheep again to get votes to keep your job because beyond politics the only thing you are capable of is scouting the bushman ranch in texas for would be terrorists & acting as a sounding board for gw’s brainstorms? I think not as weed isn’t really an issues w/the sheep as they are more concerned about personal financial issues at the moment, but no telling what’s going thru the melon of an anti-herb political worm. BUT LETS JUST EDUCATE THE SHEEP ANYWAYS, & REMOVE THE POSSIBILITY FOR YOU.
3) PERSONAL- Vendetta against the weed clan? Wife was corn holed by moonbeam & stardust @ a dead concert 30 years ago & has had subsequent anal problems ever since, blaming it all what she smoked? (she was a drunk whore screaming for more) Stoner kids messing up your lawn cause your such a douche bag? So many possibilities for someone such as yourself.
STOP THE INSANITY- ASK HOW CAN YOU & WHY WOULD YOU
REMOVE THE POLITICAL ANGLES BY STOPPING THE LIES & EXPOSING THE LIARS.

Just a SIMPLE question?
Jun 15 2009, 9:15 pm
I sure as hell don't want to here it is inflation!
It never made that much of a difference.
Who else but the DEA and the police, why?
To make it look and sound like a big and profittable business that needs to be controlled, and as was stated a few months back...give them an inch and they take a mile.
I can recall when great Hawaiian was $100 an oz and Gold was 35-45 an oz.
If they went and raided a house that grew say a pound a plant at prices back then, you think it would sound so dramatic to the press...NEWS FLASH...."Police raid a house that was producing $1,000 worth of cannabis!" compared to "Police raid a house that they assume was producing $25,000 worth of cannabis every 3 months!"
I know what headlines would give me more funds to pay for my next house with!
Decrease the price and take away their inflated underground market value and watch them scream.
Or as was a great plan...just use it to trade for different types of smoke and there is no money trading hands..no more profit no more control.

If I had weed that good, I know enough already to titrate my dose(take a hit, wait 10 mins., repeat until stoned to satisfaction) and NEVER, EVER get behind the wheel of a car.
Why doesn't he also increase penalties for posession of Everclear or Bacardi 151? They are stronger drugs compared to beer and wine. Once again, what system is this "kush" supposedly harming anyway?
Kirk is just another government-corporate fascist tool.
