Two high-profile US snowboarders - one understood to be a Winter Olympics silver medallist - have been arrested and charged with possessing cannabis in Wanaka.
The men had a significant amount of the drug in their possession when police doing a random breath-alcohol check stopped their car on Beaconpoint Rd on Saturday evening, Sergeant Paul Crosswell said yesterday.
One of the men was driving.
No other charges have been laid and the police have declined to publicly identify the snowboarders.
They are scheduled to appear in the Queenstown District Court on Monday.
The men, aged in their 20s, told police they were in New Zealand as tourists.
It is not known whether they intend to compete in the New Zealand Snowboarding Open, which begins in Wanaka on August 11, or the Winter Games NZ starting on August 22.
Attempts to contact US snowboard coach Mike Janowski yesterday were unsuccessful.
The men are not on the list of US entrants received for the snowboard open.
The maximum penalty for a conviction for possession of marijuana is three months' jail and/or a $500 fine.

I spent 15 years out in the streets working 2 or 3 jobs just to survive. Meeting, partying, socializing. But for a purpose, hopefully to talk a few back to the side of justice and reason. Some followed, some got prison, others aren't worth wondering about.
Needless to say, being raised on the streets of America can be daunting. But there are many good citizens, you just need to get to know your neighbors. Twist-up a fatty, and go say hi. I'm the biggest intravert on the planet. But gimme a little pot - and they can't shut me up. But the streets left me a little hardened.
But then I spent 15 years working for a company that loves and protects its employees fiercely. And demands respect and performance in return. Here is what you see, 15 years of the street, and 15 years of wisdom and kindness. But the whole time, knowing my family was behind every move I made.
End the violence, fix the economy, feed the starving.

That I have spent every waking moment of my entire life to remove the laws to free the weed, to protect and serve the police and government, and to fight (and kill if necessary) to protect my family. And not shed one tear. That is the duty, and honour, bestowed on every citizen of a free society. Simple...do or die! My buddy Saebulus Mjulhus taught me that.
Many Gererals, Sages, are merely wise and perceptive. Take away the guns and bongs and you will find brilliant curious and innovative, not igonorant intolerant and greedy. We all possess that ability, it is what you call God. That little voice that alsways tells you right from wrong. You can follow it, BLINDLY, or you can pretend to know better than evolution.
