Dutch Police in Cannabis Mix-Up

A triumph for Dutch police quickly turned out to be an embarrassing mistake after they destroyed what they thought was a field of cannabis plants.

Police on Wednesday announced they had discovered a plantation of some 47,000 cannabis plants with a street value of 4.4m euros ($6.3m; £3.8m).

They had destroyed much of the crop when they were told the plants belonged to a respected school of agriculture.

They were a type of hemp, being grown as a fibre for use in textiles.

The hemp plants looked like cannabis, but contained only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive substance found in marijuana.

They were being grown in the field near Lelystad, Flevoland province under licence by researchers from Wageningen University who were studying the hemp variety as a potential sustainable source of textiles.

"The street value from a drug point of view is less than zero," the university's Simon Vink told AP news agency.

Under Dutch law, cannabis is a controlled substance, and its large-scale production is illegal.

However a policy of tolerance is applied to individual users.

Why didnt the university talk w the police/gov/local judges at planting time? The cops would know there was something goin on, the task force could watch the progress and KNOW everything was on the up and up and not THINKING something wasnt right. Good thing rabid law dogs are in other places then Ohio and Indiana

A guy I know that is crazy shot a buddy in the back over a grow they were sharing!Shot him in each knee and then emptyed the gun in the Disabled men's back !All over a few dam buds! I say waite till it's Legal to grow it!A-lot of older people Really need this Wounderful Herb to help with pain and other Illnesses and your not helping 1 darn bit saying all this BS ! We need a way for people all over the USA to Vote on this and get it done and over with ! I have been doing work for 40 + years to try and help the movement and your kind is part of the problem ! The way hemp is cropped out in a field varys greatly as opposed to marijuana.

Hemp is bunched together so no side growth can be obtained, packed in so you get more stem for fibre, not buds. Each plant is trying to out grow the other to compete for light, resulting in taller stems.

Marijuana is planted for bud growth, plants are widely separated to achieve maximum coverage of light to entire plant. Plants are much wider with side growth.

I'm sure they all now it now, its sad such a revolutionary crop was destroyed. Hemp is good for some 5,000 some odd textiles, great source of biofuel. Best anti-cancer plant known to man. (Amazing "Hemp oil" project i heard about on You Tube going on in Canada, check that shit out. Hemp Oil cures cancers!) It could save the planet and the people. Its the key to continued human existence, I believe. If the full potentials are not fully obtained and appreciated worldwide it could mean the destruction of the world we know.

The black market street value for cannabis might be larger than the open market for hemp, but im sure its still a big loss for that university and a set back in its research and im sure that the police department didn't take any responsibility for their ignorance and reimburse the school...

It's large scale growing thats illegal... they burned what they thought was pot but it wasn't.. For the cops it's a fuck up but cops are prolly not pieces of shit there like they are here

I THINK THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD LEGALIZE IT.IF THEY DID THEY WOULD GET RID OF ALOT OF PROBLEMS WITH THE POLICE AND OTHER GOVERNMENT OFFICALS.

Whoa, the police fuck up again. No surprise there really. I just hope that they provide compensation, apologize, and don't mess up again. It's unfortunate that people have to deal with the police like this, they are only making things much worse.
