A Legend Passes On: Gatewood Galbraith Dies At 64

-
Kentucky attorney and legendary marijuana and hemp advocate Gatewood Galbraith has passed away from complications due to pneumonia. He was 64. Gatewood was cut from the same cloth as Jack Herer. A fiery, articulate cannabis activist for decades, Gatewood ran five times for governor of Kentucky – three times as a Democrat, once on the Reform ticket and last year as an independent. He finished third in the three-candidate race this past November.

Galbraith was a strong advocate for hemp farming in Kentucky. On his campaign website, he wrote: “My view is that government's role should be to uplift, enlighten, educate and ennoble the citizen, not oppress them with taxation and intrusive laws.”

A colorful personality possessing a sharp wit, Gatewood told the Louisville Courier-Journal just last October, “I want the government to stay out of my life unless I represent a threat to somebody else or their property.”

Galbraith was interviewed by HIGH TIMES in March 1990 and appeared on the cover of the magazine with Willie Nelson in January 1991. Just last year Gatewood visited the HIGH TIMES office to discuss the importance of individual rights – particularly in relation to marijuana.

Very Sad, I bet he was a super cool guy wish I could have met him. I heard he once drove around Kentucky in a car powered completely on hemp oil as he campaigned for Governor. A great loss to our cause, this bong rip is for Ganja Guru Gatewood...............

Just wanted to let everyone know that there will be a memorial to the late Gatewood Galbraith, on Thursday, 1/12/2012. Here are the details:

Time: 4:00 to 8:00 pm (Eastern Time)
Place: Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning
251 West 2nd Street
Lexington, KY

Map: http://tinyurl.com/7xrtqfs

I worked with Gatewood on his 1991 and 1993 campaigns and he was a friend. I will miss him and his enthusiasm for working to make the world more people-friendly for everyone.

He published my research paper, "SHADOW OF THE SWASTIKA: The Real Reason the Government Won't Debate Medical Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Re-legalization," on his website, and his running mate, Jerry Hammond, did the HTML. The paper documents that Cannabis Prohibition was enacted to protect the expected World War II war profits of the top U.S. corporations, and their bankers, which were secretly allied with the Nazis. Any serious investigation into what was going on at the time - behind the scenes of the Prohibition - would bring this treason in time of war, to the public's attention.

Hope to see you there to celebrate this Great American's life and High Times.

Will God have to make a new Gatewood? Everything he had he gave to us earthlings; a Generous Man. How come I feel so poor now?

I remember a couple of years ago, my sister and I were driving in Lexington on a Sunday afternoon. I saw Gatewood jogging on Man 'O War and rolled my window down, beeped my horn, and screamed "Hey Gatewood!", my sister had no idea what I was doing, and when she heard the name Gatewood she told me to leave him alone, he is trying to jog in peace. He waved and smiled, and yelled hey back. She had no idea how friendly and outgoing he was to everyone. He always had time for everyone, and anyone. I hope he is having a wonderful afterlife because everyone knows he has earned it. Thanks for everything, Gatewood.

A shame that, saw him in that documentary with Woody Harelson, "Hempsters - Plant the Seeds" which I posted on my blog. When we lose one, there must be more to carry on the good fight.
