Alcohol is Far Worse Than Marijuana

A few years ago I asked an Alaska State Trooper, “If you had a choice of either having alcohol or marijuana legal which one would you pick?” Without hesitation he said, “Oh, marijuana! People who drink get drunk, get in their cars, drive fast, go home and beat up their families. People, who smoke marijuana get stoned, get in their cars, drive slowly, go home and eat and play with the kids.”

It’s always amazed me that alcohol and tobacco, two of the most insidious drugs available, are accepted by the government, while a relatively benign drug like marijuana is illegal.

Marijuana does not lead to harder drugs. If a person has an addictive personality, he or she will find something to be addicted to. If anything, it’s alcohol that will take a person closer to hard drugs. Alcohol and cocaine go hand in hand.

Let’s regulate marijuana and give the government another source of revenue.

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and U.S. Drug Abuse Warning Network, in 2003 there was around 20,687 alcohol indused deaths while the use of marijuana has not been known to cause a death. So for anyone dissing Mary J and upping the drinkers you should double check yourself.

Everyone should just mind their own business. Just let everyone choose for their own self. Their are several other things, that each and everyday,can be way more important than a little buzz. There are many little and large choices that can make commonly easy decisions like needing to pee a factor, like location and timing. Lol. You make your choices nearly every minute.There are plenty of activities in this world that are way worse than smoking marijuana. Why can't these other problems we have, be devoted to with such intensity. We could at least the attempt to do the same,or more. (intensity) Worrying about something that may or may have extenuating long term effects is just plainly a waste or time and resources. There are plenty of other major problems to deal with. Tell me that cigarettes, and beer are not worse on people physically or mentally. My dad was an alcoholic for several years and also indulged in many other drugs including marijuana. Each and every thing he did besides the marijuana ,noticeably made a difference in his life. For the worst. The marijuana eased his pain. Not pills. Pills can be the worst drug out there that we are dealing with. My father died two years ago and everyday i wish i could just say high,or even say you suck....Anything......whiskey and beer took his liver.Pot may be a little bad for us...But weigh the benefits. Pot offers a calmness in a world that is so gray and bleak. How many things out there today that we see and do are good for us. How many can you honestly say are what is truly good for us..its trivial. Put the matter where it needs to be,at the bottom of the problem pile we have. We should put starvation and unemployment, health care ahead of marijuana control.infuriate our love for legal drugs and do studies on long term exposure to all drugs. then enforcement on what is killing us. If less officers and business men put their time into global warming, ooh wouldn't that just be so strange. How dare we as the strongest nation in the world did something that needs to be fixed. Quit worshiping your lovely alcohol and cigarettes. Legalized pot would bring in just as much taxable money and individual revenue, as cigarettes, alcohol and gas together. Hell possibly more. Lets just allow people make their own decision. Set your driving and age limits, just like cigarettes and alcohol. Enforce it like it is,normal. Thanks,

Weed is a great thing! it does alot less damage than drinking does. Drinking can make a person very violent... weed can calm you down and make things alot better, you will be positive and see the great in things drinking will make you miserable. this is why i believesmoke and never drink

My opinion is that pot is like many other drugs in that it has side effects. Now I do agree that alcohol is more dangerous because you can overdose from it and is addictive and harmful in it's own way.. However, "down with weed" is correct about the long term side effects that mary jane can cause. But the reality is that eating fried chicken and twinkies are harmful too. How about legal prescription drugs such as antidepressants. They are probably just as harmful but in differents ways. I don't see why marijuana should be classified as a dangerous drug considering that many FDA approved drugs can be just as harmful. But you will notice that I am an ex-pot smoker because I wasn't okay with the side effects mentioned below. Peace and love to all.

Because of the serious physical and psychological effects associated with its use, Despite the fact that it is widely available, and even “accepted” in some families and communities, marijuana remains a legally restricted harmful drug. It’s main ingredient is THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), a mind-altering chemical. Marijuana produced today has a level of THC that is up to 25 times higher than the type sold in the 1960s. And depending on how it is “cut”, it can contain hundreds of other harmful chemicals, many of which are carcinogenic (cancer-causing).
Biologically, marijuana affects the brain, heart, lungs, sexual organs, and depresses the immune system. The effects on the brain include distortion of the senses, confused judgment, and decreased motor skills. Operating machinery and motor vehicles becomes dangerous. Effects on the heart include rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. Respiratory problems include pharyngitis, laryngitis, and bronchitis. Marijuana has been associated with lung, head, and neck cancers. It reduces the T-cells in the immune system that are needed to fight off infections. In pre-teens, marijuana use can retard physical growth and slow down development. High dose marijuana use can cause decreased fertility, breast enlargement in males, and breast milk production.

Usually marijuana in inhaled (smoking a “joint”) for it’s psychological effects. Within the first few minutes, it produces a sense of heightened well being and relaxation. Now that sounds good. But with continued use, the mental effects include short-term memory loss, shortened attention span, impaired learning, social withdrawal, and decreased motivation. Anxiety attacks, panic reactions, delirium, and hallucinations can occur. So pediatricians are very concerned about the harmful effects of marijuana and we do not support its use or legalization.

Kate, you are retarded, all you said was that drinking isn't bad, it just depends on whether or not you drink too much, when the same rule can apply to pot.. well hrmm, let's just do one tiny social experiment. we'll look at a pot head that likes to be lazy and eat a lot of food, then we'll look at those good old acoholics that go home and beat the crap out of their family and drive around recklessly. also, yeah weed is bad on the lungs and brain , but alcohol is bad for the liver, brain, and all that good stuff, and if you overdose on acohol you can DIE, not pot. if you can't figure out which of the 2 is worse, i might seriously question whether you actually are retarded or not...

I agree alcohol is more anti-social then weed 100%. Alcohol makes people think they are superman, after a few pints, and get into fights with there mates over who's buying the next pint!
Weed makes people socialise and be in a general good, happy mood. I know alot of people that would rather smoke weed at a weekend or on any other occasion where they would consume alcohol, as its more of a pleasureable experience to them.
Basically... LEGALISE CANNABIS!
Look at Amsterdam as a proved point that cannabis tollerance doesn't make the society psychotic, like you hear every newspaper blab on about.
Why is Alcohol legal and cannabis isn't? Because the world we live in is fucked up!

look, it is a fact, alcohol is an addictive drug which is abused will lead to death. i just read a stat in a book which said that alcohol is responsible for more deaths each year than all the illegal drugs combined. and its true. the only reason cannabis has been illigalized is because of nothing more than yellow journalism by william R. I'm sorry but no. You can NOT say everyone who drinks drives drunk and beats their family. And I honestly doubt someone whose stoned can drive home safely and play with their children. How can any of you people say drugs aren't bad for you..Are you completely insane? Do any of you know what drugs do to you? Why don't you get someone whose smoked pot regularly all their life. You'll most likely notice they aren't completely there. In some way I want drugs legalized. So it can be taxed..I actually bet less people would smoke because of the cost. okay. i agree with you too. when you have been drinking you have no control over your body and when i smoke everything just is better. you get in a better mood. there is no evidence that marijuana is bad for your lungs or gives you lung cancer.. and fuck no it isnt worse than smoking cigeretts. i think that the only reason why the government doesnt legalize pot is because it is such a big profit. yOu can use pot for more than just smoking. DUDE you can use hash oil to run your cars, to run anything with a motor. it has such a high power that i dont think the government is ready for it to be legal. If it was there wouldnt be as much violence and not soo many drunk driving accidents. when do you ever hear on the news about someone getting high and getting in the car and killing someone? you dont, because you have control.

i drink and i smoke and if i had to choose i would say pot, because when i drink i get messed up and sometimes i can't control myself. but i smoke every day i have got more imuned to the drug so it dont get me as stoned it just relieves stress and makes me in a good mood. actually i think i drive better when i'm high.

In 1997 my husband passed away from cancer.He was 42.When we found out,he weighed 235.As the cancer began to take over his body,the meds were not working,he could'nt eat.He had lost 90 lbs.And was getting worse.We had friends that told us if he got high,he would get the "munchies" and eat.This was true,he began to eat again.Pluse,smoking also helped with the pain and he could relax.He was also very angree at times(not his fault),smoking also helped to keep him calm.It helped me too.

Why is it that tobacoo smoking, which kill thousands of americans every day, and alcohol, which impares vision and slows body processes, are both legal while marijuana isnt. If the government and the american old people association dont want people high, than why is alcohol legal? If they think marijuana kills people, why are cigarettes legal? Also, why wouldnt the government want to end all the underground markets of marijuana and other drugs. If legalized, they could tax it and make money while at the same time decreasing the crime rate. In highschool pot is thought to lead to other drugs and knowing from experience, it can. But also knowing from experience, I know that this is only true because illegal drugs are illegal drugs, and the drug dealers that deal illegal weed to their friends also deal the other illegal drugs. By setting a line between marijuana and all the other illegal drugs, I'm confident that the current gateway drug of America, marijuana, will simply become a potent stress reliever and a great party smoke.

my pops smoked weed on a regular,davled with cocaine, and drank more than most. his own abuse with alchohol took him to his grave at 41. when he drank he was very abusive but when he smoked marijuana he was laid back,peaceful,and content at the same time. alchohol litteraly kills you, yet its advertised nationally and promoted as an introduction to full adulthood at 21. swerving drunk drivers have been killing people on a daily basis across the nation for years and still alchohol is o.k. i havent heard of one single person dying from smoking marijuana but if you get caught with 1 gram you could go to jail and if its 28 grams or over the law is ready to take your whole life away. i believe that if they took away marijuana forever, the crime rate would jump higher than anyone could hanle. i say legalize the shit!

I am 18 years old and i love nothing more than smoking dope. It is the best thing out there. You dont get addicted to it like alchohol, you just like it.I have been smoking everyday for the past 3 years. I have only been arrested for pot once,and i didnt even have any on me. What i am trying to say is that i get stoned and drive and i dont crash, speed kill, or any of the stupid things that these congressmen and women are saying to stop people from smoking pot. It opens new doors,and i dont mean new drugs, i mean new friends, new oppertunities, new life and that is why my choice is pot.

When I was in my teens I used to smoke a lot of pot and enjoyed it. After high school and marriage I quit, thought to my self at least
alcohol is legal. After twenty years of drinking beer, I distroyed my stomach lining and almost bled to death in my front yard. If you smoke now, don't stop and think, well I'll just drink alcohol. If I could go back I would Never have quit pot, and Dam sure would have NEVER HAVE HAD A DRINK.

Ill admit to smoking pot along with all my buddies, i also am a baseball player for my high school and last year our number one pitcher was one of the biggest pot heads you would ever meet. He used to smoke befor ever game even when he did pitch, befor one game he pitched he smoked up and that game he pitched a perfect game and in the last inning he was still throwing 91 mphs. legalization would solve so many problems in this world, and come on whats wrong with smoking a few bowls, having a few good laughs, eating a few twinkies, and taking a nice nap.

the truth is that maybe society would be better off if marijuana were legalized;
but honestly I believe the majority of the people are already cannabis smokers you can't stop what you don't control. I hope for our sake that it isn't legalized - marijuana is the only product to escape inflation if the government got there hands on this underground industry they would probably tax it throug the roof.
We already have and do it leave good alone.

i think alcohol is great and so is weed man! we should organize all the smokers in the country to start guerilla farming and is we can get enough ppl growing all at once say maybe, 5 million ppl growing 5 plants a peice at a time then it's possible that the gov't would have to give in! they can't arrest everyone the prisons are already crowded enough! either that or we can all do as the one guy mentioned earlier and every smoker in the country send $10 to NORML and that would generate a ton of money to gain support like the tobacco and alcohol companies.

First of all I would like to say that until we unite we will never get anywhere with legalizing pot.
We will always be unorganized grabastic pieces of shit to the state. Everyone says Ah shit let the next guy handle it.
well guess what. You and I are the next guy. If we don't speak out or don't get active
in an organization like NORML then who are we to blame? Ourselves. Even if the federal Government does leagleize pot
it would be still criminal by the state. (each state reserves the right to pass its own laws and regulate itself).
So getting it legalized by the federal government means very little. Especially when the state cops come pounding at the door at 3 a.m.
Secondly put aside your predgudices for whatever. Gay marriage bans etc. Hey they smoke too! We can use there help.
It is wrong to deny them there civil rights based on sexual preference just as it is to deny someone based on color or religion.

Contact you local pot advocate chapter and find out how you can help.
We must take it to the state level. State by state. Get the issues on the state ballots.
Can you find 5000 or so signatures to get it on your states ballots? Are you willing to help???

then if it is that important to you HELP! Do something before its too late. STOP waiting on the next stoner.

I agree that alcohol is far more dangerous than pot and some people drive better when they are high. As for legalizing pot and letting the government tax it like they do cigarettes,screw that! They make enough damn money off of U.S. citizens!

I agree with everyone, Y is it that we have to put up with the gov, we are suppost to vote on stuff, and if "WE THE PEOPLE" Vote on something then it should be so.
And I dont thank it should or shouldent be regalated, I thank that you should be able to grow it yourself like in your garden with your cabbage and corn, or buy it from the store like cig's and alco.

Amen! I asked a doctor one time if he were a patient and they told him the surgeon had to be either stoned or drunk to do the operation what would he choose. Hands down stoned for the same reason's as the trooper. Keep fighting for de-criminilization. Peace

Yes, I was born on April 20th, but that's besides the point.

I have been using marijuana since I was a teenager in 1973.

I do not have a criminal record.

I have been tested with an IQ of 140.

I graduated from high school a full year early, by taking additional classes during every summer. I had an A average.

I was an honor graduate of the technical school I attended when in the US military.

I worked full time and at the same time put myself through college, graduating with a degree in Computer Science - Magna Cum Laude (GPA of 3.875)

I am a hard and dedicated worker, considered one of the best in the industry in my area of technical expertise, and for many years have had a six-figure salary.

I am a loving father, and do not condone nor encourage marijuana use by minors.

I grew up in an era when I was taught that marijuana was a dangerous drug. Unfortunately for the establishment, I was too intelligent to buy the lie - I could easily see that those in authority were not telling me the truth about marijuana.

Most of those in power would like to silence persons like myself - they don't want the truth about marijuana to be widely known.

Research, Learn, seek the REAL truth about marijuana - and then make an intelligent and informed decision for yourself. Please don't be an idiot and simply mimick the "party line" for either side (pro or con) - use your mind to make an informed and intelligent decision on the issue.

And now my opinion:

Take the same arguments used against marijuana and apply them to alcohol use - then ask yourself why we must fight to legalize marijuana, instead of fighting to make alcohol illegal? It seems to me that the powers that be have this whole issue turned completely upside down. Why?

My friend right now is going through alcohol withdrawl. He has an inlarged liver and signs of Hepapatitis. When he lived here all we did was smoke pot. We never got sick from smoking pot. If alcohol is legal then pot should be too. I hope my friend turns back to the bong and not the bottle. I love you Brian.

Wow...what a site I found much like the officer. I have found many interesting things here that have got me reading for long periods of time. I agree with some your comments. Alcohol has more severely corrupted people than marijuana and yet it is legal. As far as the driving thing, it may be easier to do it high but I have pulled over some people who looked just as bad from behind the car as an intoxicated person. I guess it depends on how much you smoke. Do I recommend it? No. Much like some of the Officer's comments I agree that we have bigger fish to fry. If it one day becomes legal, then fine I have nothing against it. Until then I am just doing my job as any other law enforcement officer would.

I love to drink beer, but smokin' ganja is much better. When drunk, driving is a dumb thing. Your most likly to speed, cant drive straight, run intersections, or even fall asleep. Also drunk people do like to get rowdy. If the keg runs dry, people get pissed and start to fight. A stoned driver drives the speed limit or under, is always safe, and really all they want is a burger or some gummi worms. A stoner doesn't get pissed off if he runs out of weed, only because all you want is some food at that piont...

sometimes when yr driven, ahi guy will drive right into you, thats why they should have medical mari available to them You could hire me to tend a crop for speculative purposes of regulation. That way.. who knows what they smoked. Some of them get hooked on the wrong stuff and never come off it because they don't have a choice..

As an avid smoker and also a heavy drinker (Why Not) I Can conclude that when I am high I drive SLOW (On Accident) 40 on the highway, But when I am drunk I fly (not on highways who wants a ticket but on back roads I live in the country) about 70 in a 45. Also I dont like to fight but it seems more likely when im drunk because as said before when im high im just chillin, I have also Talked to officers that are cool and most of the time they say they cant wait for retirement (so they can smoke) so yes alcohol is alot worse than pot, As i have gotten older i also smoke way better product which has a WAY better effect, but no it doesnt give me a hang over in fact smoking in the Morning with a hang over Takes that nasty feeling right away, So no i wouldnt say ban alcohol but yes legalize a inferior intoxicant like Marijuana

I at least agree with this posts' effects that alcohol vs. marijuana has on a person. Most people JUST high on pot are not violent. However, don't be driving while your high. Thats not any safer than if you were drunk.

I'll answer your first response now. No, I have never smoked so I don't know exactly how it feels to be high. But, I have seen people drive high, and I have talked to friends who have smoked and drove. They even admitted that they shouldn't have been driving.

The reason why marijuana was originally made a controlled substance in the US was because of the cotton industry. Hemp, which comes from the same plant family as Cannabis could put the cotton industry out of business. Of course, a lobby government and propaganda can always pass such a bill through, when both of the plants are distant relatives if you look at the family.

Kerry is as much as a stupid middle age white man running for president as Bush is. They are both for "the war on terror" and for the "war on drugs" anyone in the Vietnam war smoked up, and if they didn't, they drank a lot c'mon people.

The only way the US government will ever legalize weed is if they can regulate it. If all so called "drugs" were legal and regulated the taxes off it alone could probably fund a universal health care system. The prison system makes money off inmates but the people controlled by the prison system would disappear by 70%, and law enforcement could spend their time on real criminals.

Why doesn't it work that way? Big bussiness, outdated morality and a lobby government. But any forseeable universal legalization of marijuana would be regulated by the government. Besides, doctors are mostly pushers for GOVERNMENT funded drug companies.
