Here are the news stories that caught our attention in safe, easy to use blurbs followed by links:

• An “unknown number” of MMJ dispensaries were raided in San Diego. The situation is nebulous – which is the norm with dispensary raids – and it remains unclear how many shops were busted, how many people arrested or what charges they face. It is clear, however, that the raids involved officers from the San Diego PD and the DEA.

Don Duncan from Americans for Safe Access summed it up: “Not only does the federal government have no place helping to enforce state and local medical marijuana laws, local officials must regulate medical marijuana and enforce those laws with civil actions, not with the barrel of a gun.”

There may be a press conference to provide further information today, so we may have an update… signonsandiego.com

***UPDATE*** (Told you)

Turns out the dispensaries in question were run by “drug dealers” according to the District Attorney’s office. Officers hit 14 dispensaries and made off with unspecified amounts of pot, more than $70,000 cash and several guns. Not a bad haul.

District Attorney Bonnie M. Dumanis would like to be clear from the start: "Let me be clear from the start, this investigation has nothing to do with legitimate medical marijuana patients, or their caregivers.” See? Now that’s a compassionate DA. If only this quote wasn’t from the same article: "'Help me, help me, I am being arrested,' one man said as he was handcuffed in his wheelchair at Hillcrest Compassion Care."…nbcsandiego.com

• The LA Times totally blew up the spot for a bunch of medical marijuana dispensaries by plotting the addresses found on the city clerk’s website. The paper reported that 260 dispensaries fall within 1,000 feet of a school, library or park. 1,000 feet is the proposed buffer zone in a pending City Council ordinance.

The article also drops this nugget: “A Times analysis of pot store names, however, showed that the most frequently occurring word was the socialist-tinged ‘collective,’ appearing in 199 of the names.” It did not specify how many of these “socialist-tinged” businesses were frightening school children, disturbing library circulation or ruining parks… latimes.com

• The Arizona Supreme Court told Daniel Hardesty that the freedom of religion argument won’t help overturn his conviction for pot possession while driving. Hardesty, a member of the Church of Cognizance, pointed to previous rulings that OK’d the religious use of peyote. However, the court saw a difference: “’Members of the Native American Church assert only the religious right to use peyote in limited sacramental rights,' the chief justice wrote. ‘Hardesty asserts the right to use marijuana whenever he pleases, including while driving.’”

It’s been a tough couple of years for the Church of Cognizance. Its founders were busted for possession and conspiracy with intent to distribute in ’08… azstarnet.com

Prohibition or Crime?

Sep 19 2009, 8:34 pm

Our elected legislators have allowed a federal bureaucracy to become so powerful that they could be causing the unnecessary deaths of American citizens.
It is mandated by congress that the ONDCP refuse and refute any clinical or scientific proof of marijuana as a medicine or recommends that marijuana be moved from schedule I. They are required to fight legalization by any means necessary.
The DEA is the main law enforcement in the federal government for interdiction and enforcement of federal drug laws . They are also the agency charged with the final approval of any studies or clinical testing of marijuana.
As of this date, they have routinely refused all applications trying to prove any medical uses of marijuana,in any form, except to the pharmaceutical companies,(Marinol).
The pharmaceutical companies also have several more medicines in various stages of testing, that are either derived from or are synthetically produced because the chemical compounds that are naturally in marijuana have shown to have medicinal properties.
Yet the ONDCP still claims that marijuana has no medicinal uses.
Every medical evaluation that congress has ordered, since 1972,has stated that marijuana is a possible therapeutic medicine and has recommended that it be removed from schedule I ,and they have refused to listen to the doctors and scientists.
Now there are four studies, one paid for by the ONDCP budget ,that has stated that marijuana in it's natural form shows
cancer blocking properties and may prove to be a cure for some cancers.
They are still refusing to reschedule marijuana so scientific testing can be done to find out if we are possibly prohibiting a natural cancer blocker.
Any study that the DEA approves now, with their history of and continued anti-marijuana campaign, and a federal budget in the billions riding on the findings of such a study.would be tainted.
They are required by law, to lie if necessary,to keep protecting America, even if it kills us..
The pharmaceutical companies are trying to synthesize and extract the medical compounds from marijuana,so they can put it in a pill,to sell you,but the plant already has the compounds in it,safely. Big pharmacy's one attempt at synthetic thc, marinol,
has been listed as the cause of death four times, and only been used by a very few patients. Marijuana has been used by millions, with real thc in it,and never been listed as a cause of death. And the same results may occur with the new medicines, derived from or copying compounds from pot.
Every day that goes by that they delay the testing to see if marijuana blocks cancer, may be allowing people too contract cancer that could have been blocked or treated with marijuana
and it is a dangerous game they are playing with peoples lives
just too protect who?

Whether marijuana blocks cancer 62% as claimed in one study,or even 1/2 that amount, wouldn't it be better to block cancer than treat it. And big pharmacy has no cancer blocking medicines, and there are none going through any clinical testing
but they are working on some more cancer treatments, using cannibinoids that are in marijuana.
Pharmaceutical companies are suits and ties, not caregivers or even doctors, they are after the buck, for the buck and of the buck. They don't want cancer blocked,or cured, they make billions treating it.
Someone STOP this INSANITY
PS. The stupid potheads are alredy blocking as much cancer as possible, please don't tell any DEA about this.

Did you expect anything different from this administration. The drug raids are just beginning. If you look back at where they started--big banks, GM, tobacco--they are going after the money. These raids are just pocket change for them and the local cops. It's about the money. They don't want anyone making money without them getting a deep cut. Health care is the proof of my point. They act like its for the uninsured, but; its' about controlling and profiting from it. If they legalized it, which they should, people would make money without them knowing anything about. They know that and they are not going to let that happen. That's why it's not about Dems. or Repub. anymore. It's about who will be best for America. At this point, Ron Paul. Let's just hope we still have a working country by 2012. Wake up America, this crap is deeper than you might think, and it's not flushing right now.

CONCERNING THE RAIDS ON MARIJUANA DISPENSARIES.,
NO MATTER YOUR RELIGION OR DISTANCE FROM CHILDREN OR EVEN YOUR LEGAL STATUS AND ALL THE PAPER WORK IN THE WORLD WILL NOT SAVE YOU FROM YOUR SELVES!!!!
YOU HAVE BEEN SUCKERED BY THE GOVERNMENT!!!
IT'S AS I HAVE FEARED ALL ALONG!!!!

call bonnie dumanis!
here is my letter to her!
stop operation green rx!

Bonnie,
Why have you not addressed the city's unwillingness to issue business license to medical marijuana collectives? Why are we stuck in pending due to lack of "use" in the zoning department? Is not the city forcing these collectives to therefore operate "illegally" due to their pending status? I wish you simply state the facts instead of giving us a bias tainted opinion!
Why won’t you talk to Collective owners and learn about us? Medical Marijuana is a big part of San Diego and it would be a step in the right direction for all of us to communicate.
Bonnie the quote about Starbucks and medical marijuana collectives is what we call a fallacy- in rhetoric they are not comparable. Caffeine is on the top 5 killer list amongst Americans! Just look up the word caffeine in Wikipedia.
Riddle me this Ms. Dumanis, How do I become a “legal” medical marijuana collective? What do I need to do to appease you, San Diego Police Department, and the DEA? Besides total closure (which is against Prop. 215 and SB 420- Safe Access), what do YOU want? How should I operate?
Hoping to find a compassionate solution soon!

Welcome too Tiajuanadam? If the cartels would just up and move to another country, they could reduce the violence and really start making ton's of money for pounds of pot, instead of tons of money for tons of pot that have to be smuggled into the US. With the available "entertainment" and add any kind of drug you desire, the Mexicans are sitting on a gold mine, and they don't have too cross our border or fight the DEA to do it.

Mexico's new drug laws will be used to jump start its flat tourist industry.I urge H.T.to cover any junkets/events with (a now legal)drug tie-in.The "Eightball Junket" has a HUGE potential market. If Mexico gains tourist market share the Caribbean Nations will have to follow. The U.S.will grumble, hemorage a lot of greenbacks' and finally in an attempt to stem the dollar flow, and make our resort areas more competative, announce it is restructuring certain federal statutes, to protect the health and wellfare of the U.S.citizen.POT will be LEGAL.Mexican tourism has the potenial to topple the current federal system.
