States Must Decide How to Regulate Medical Marijuana

Mon, Oct 26, 2009 5:13 pm

Now that the federal government is no longer prosecuting medical marijuana patients and providers who are in compliance with state law, the regulation of legal pot falls to local government. According to the New York Times, there are two schools of thought on how state and local governments will react to this new role.

First, the glass half full view:

“Some health and legal experts say the Justice Department’s decision will promote the spread of marijuana for medical uses because local and state officials often take leadership cues from federal policy. That … could lead to more liberal rules in states that already have medical marijuana and to more voters and legislators in other states becoming comfortable with the idea of allowing it.”

And half empty:

“Scores of local governments in California, Colorado and other states have gone the other way and imposed bans or moratoriums on distribution even though state law allows it.”

So, we’ll either have a utopia of dispensary-speckled landscapes stretching from coast to coast leading to each state deciding to legalize marijuana outright, or we’ll have excessively restrictive ordinances created by petrified local councils acting in opposition to the will of the voters. Or something in between. …nytimes.com

THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITES STATES HAVE BECOME INSOLVENT AND THE REST OF THE WORLD CANNOT TAKE THE BURDEN AND THE CHINESE COMMUNISTS WILL DUMP THE DOLLAR SOON FOLLOWED IN SUIT BY THE OTHER DOLLAR HOLDING COUNTRIES BY THE TIME WE REALIZE THIS THE TROOPS WILL HAVE BEEN IN PLACE FOR WEEKS.
GROW YOUR OWN AND FREE YOURSELVES FROM THESE SLAVE MASTERS AND DEMIGODS FROM WASHINGTON D.C. !!!!!
THERE ARE NO MORE DOLLARS TO BE SPENT SO RECKLESSLY BY THE GOVERNMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES.
MY LITTLE AREA HAS A POPULATION OF 16,000 PERSONS AND THE POLICE FROM AT LEAST SIX JURISDICTIONS TOOK PART TO APPREHEND 100+ PEOPLE ON DRUG WARRANTS.,THAT'S ALLMOST ONE WHOLE PERCENT OF OUR COMMUNITY THAT ARE NOW FACING JAIL FINES AND BOTH AND A LIFETIME OF JOBLESSNESS MADE WORSE BY THIS DRUG SWEEP THE COPS MADE OVER A FEW MONTHS TIME.,
ONLY THREE OF THESE WHERE FOR MARIJUANA "MANUFACTURING"!!!!!
THE REST WERE FOR PRESCRIPTION PAIN RELIEVERS AND NERVE PILLS AS THE REDNECKS LIKE TO CALL THEM AROUND HERE!!!!!
IT'S TOTALLY INSANE THAT WE AS A COMMUNITY OF 16,000 PERSONS HAD TO PAY FOR THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS OF MAN HOURS AND OTHER POLICE RESOURCES TO CATCH A FEW DRUGGED OUT PILLHEADS WHO WILL EITHER DIE OF AN OVERDOSE OR END UP WITH MEDICAL PROBLEMS WORSE THAN DEATH!!
SO??
WHY ARE WE TREATING THIS LIKE A CRIME WHEN IN FACT IT IS A MEDICAL HEALTH CRISIS?!?!?!?
WE OBVIOUSLY HAVE A BIG TIME PROBLEM WITH PAIN NOT BEING MANAGED PROPERLY AND IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE NEED SOME VALLIUMS AND ZANAX BECAUSE THE POLITICIANS HAVE SPENT OUR COUNTRIES COFFERS DRY AND WE HAVE NO FUCKING JOBS OR HEALTHCARE!!!!!!!DUH!!!!!!

PLAIN & SIMPLE; When marijuana went legal in Amsterdam the CRIME RATE drop by 2/3%, that's why Law enforcement doesn't want it legal.

PLAIN & SIMPLE: If marijuana is legal the drug industry won't be able to keep selling their drugs, the ones that have 4 or 5 different side effects, some effects so dangerous that they can cause death. *There's only one side effect with the use of marijuana, "the munchies".
And the munchies won't kill ya either.

PLAIN & SIMPLE: Their's not one death due to marijuana use on the books. Marijuana is 100% safer than alcohol.

PLAIN & SIMPLE: Alcohol causes 500k deaths a year, that's a national fact. You can look it up.

Like most doctors I've been too say:
THE BENEFITS OUT WEIGHT THE RISK. THAT'S PLAIN & SIMPLE

PLAIN & SIMPLE: Marijuana can't be dangerous and medically beneifical at the same time.

PLAIN & SIMPLE: If marijuana was legal we would have a more peaceful nation. And people would have a better way of life due to the medical benefits of it. If marijuana was legal we would save millions of dollars, and it would creat millions of jobs too. PLAIN & SIMPLE

PLAIN & SIMPLE: If marijuana was legal, It would be harder for children to have access to it.

HOW MUCH MORE PLAIN & SIMPLE CAN IT BE, Marijuana is by-far safers than alot of drugs that are legal.

change is right on, how can the government continue to schedule cannabis wrong that is the real topic, prohibition did not work back in the twenties and it is not working now, growing hemp and allowing our american farmers to grow cannabis will create thousands of jobs, in many different sectors of the economy, if you are 21 or older and want to smoke you should not be convicted persecuted or harassed.
In stead of fighting the will of the voters in california in los angeles the legislators should use the tax dollars to keep people in jobs, the city officials know that medical cannabis is legal and legitimate, but they are closing dispensaries in the central valley, when will they listen to the voters?

I've seen first hand the ravages of pain and disease. Modern medicines answer is to treat these afflictions with poison. Pain pills and chemo therapy are both poisons. If you get too much, you'll die. If you take them too long you'll die. Marijuana does have it's side effects, I won't lie. It'll make you VERY hungry. It'll make you sleep soundly. It may even bring back your sense of humor. But you won't see people over dosed on it because it's just not possible. The only problem is that there is not a standardized system in place across the states where mmj is legal. Also, in states where there are drugged driving laws, a patient can be arrested and charged with DUI. Mmj stays in your system for days, so if you last smoked on a monday, get pulled over on a thursday , you'll be charged the same as someone who's driving drunk. It isn't fair to patients and their families, the financial burden of jail and loss of a job is simply too much to bear. Especially when there is not a shred of evidence that says residual cannaboids increases accident risk. The laws need to be rewritten, written so that patients are protected.

The U.S. Gov. needs to get out of the way and the people and the pot market will regulate itself.

Just like it does now albeit at the inflated prices of contraband.

Why not just it go completly legal federally and sell it in coffee shops like they do over in Amsterdam. After it went fully legal there the crime rate went down by 2/3%, and that was over 15 to 20 years ago. The UNITED STATES is behind in the process of legalization. If you want a more peaceful nation, and so all of mankind can enjoy the benefits of MARIJUANA you need to legalize it NATIONALLY.

By legalizing it, the UNITED STATES will cripple the BIG drug cartels and most likely put these people OUT OF BUSINESS, and will also send a crippling blow to the terrorist organizations. And that's only one benefit of legalization.

Legalization will help all of mankind in more ways than anyone can ever imagine. YOU JUST HAVE TO GIVE IT
CHANCE TO WORK.

We're all talking about enforcement here, tho, and enforcement is enforcement. As long as there ARE laws against smoke, they will be used. Medical and outright legalization are the only serious ways forward...don't be distracted.

this is exactly the opposite of what I was talking about this is why we cant be taken seriously come on guys cant we put aside the hate to get MMJ legal? I mean its bad enough your views are ludicrous and unfounded but your hurting everything so many people have worked towards for years and years. So cool it with gthe plutonium and hate talk guys...show we have more sense than that.

Change

Oct 26 2009, 7:19 pm

Until they remove marijuana from schedule 1,there is no real change. How can marijuana be a schedule 1 drug when 13 states already have laws designating it as a medical treatment?
Until the control of studies and clinical testing required by the FDA,are removed from the control of the DEA,there will be no FDA approval for marijuana as a medicine.
The ONDCP will still say smoked marijuana has no medical uses and the DEA will continue to provide contradicting studies too any studies that show medical uses for marijuana as they are required to do as long as it stays schedule 1.

Oct 26 2009, 7:10 pm

as would I phil........ The most important thing behind all of this will be how we go about it. Such as legalizing it completely is too much of a risk. I think we should leave that to california and Mass. and focus on finding ways to keep it from getting out of control like it is in california.I think if we give them (officials) a serious outline of how it could be taken seriously including 3-5 plants up to an ounce and showing the benefits. Also just as important is the need for us to vote, now personally I am not registered but you can bet your ass if by some miracle my state oklahoma ( told you it would be a miracle) were to consider MMJ I would regesiter as it is we just get laughed at by our officials. The fact that more and more states are at least considering it is a great sign so get involved people find out if your state is considering it.
