Maine Votes “Yes” on Medical Marijuana Act

Wed, Nov 04, 2009 12:02 pm

Congratulations Mainers. Yesterday the Maine Medical Marijuana Act – Question 5 – passed with an estimated 60% of the vote (all precincts have not yet reported). The act expands Maine’s existing medical marijuana law, which originally passed in 1999.

Basically, the initiative will make it easier for patients to get access to their medicine by creating state licensed, non-profit dispensaries (like legislatures okayed in Rhode Island and New Mexico). Additionally, the Maine Medical Marijuana Act expands the qualifications for medical cannabis to include some pretty basic conditions many MMJ states already acknowledge.

While D.A. and president of Maine’s prosecutors association, Evert Fowle, said “It’s a very poor law … The ultimate goal of the people behind this law is to legalize marijuana,” he did at least recognize who passed the law (and who he works for). “We’ll do our best to make this law work and respect the will of the voters.”

Good for him. I’m sure that wasn’t easy. …upi.com

How come I can get a toxic dose of the pacific yew tree as chemo but you can't get relief from the side effects of the chemo from another non-toxic plant? (okay the tree itself is not toxic the compound that is used to delievr the chemo is actually toxic, but anyhow ....)The side effects from this chemo are almost unbearable, yet there are no side effects from the medicine I use to treat the side effects I get nothing but comfort and relief. How is that wrong? I am so glad we have medical marijuana in Maine although at least 8 of my doctors refused to discuse or prescribe it to me. Finally found a doc who understood medicine ;)

"One has not only a legal, but a moral
responsibility to disobey unjust laws."
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., 1963

It is absurd that it was even made illegal in the first place.........

Evert Fowle, sounds like a cry baby cause he can't make up the rules anymore. We the people wanted it, so now we are getting it. Mr. Evert Fowle just needs to shut the hell up and go with the flow, or go home and drink his whiskey till he passes out, like he does everynight.

WE THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN, let the medical marijuana train keep on come'n down the tracks, so every state has that freedom, NOT just the few. Hopefully it will snowball clear across the country, and we'll all enjoy that ride.

Hey I have a blog about the demonization of marijuana and how it should be made into a legal medication please comment and leave insightful reason behind your thoughts the medical implications of the ganja. Please leave insightful and comprehensive ideas about why you believe marijuana is a safer and better medication for pain etc.... this is a project for a toxicology class and I would like to get the people opinion but I have to remove anything that is not appropriate.

LET'S LEGALIZE IT...... my blog is

If law enforcement wasn't out chasing "POTHEADS" maybe they could chase some real criminals. But that means they'd have to do some real law enforcement work. If marijuana was legal they would have more time to chase the real bad guys. I have cousins that are in the law enforcement business, most of them are a bunch of drunks.
They drink to forget the ugly job they have to do to make a living. And most of them thinks marijuana should be legal, that it's a big waste of tax payers time and money chasing "potheads". AND IT TOOK THEM 40 SUM ODD YEARS TO FIGURE THAT ONE OUT, Slow learners.

Legalize MARIJUANA so law enforcement people can round up all the terrorist and true criminals. And stop wasting tax payers time & money chasing "POTHEADS".

This is how it's finally going to become legal, a chip off the stone block at a time. At some point it will be like the fall of the Berlin wall. Are there grow coaches available in Maine? Finally my Crohns and Hep C pay off!

I live in maine, and I have Crohn's Disease and I am so happy that this great alternative is now legal too. Maine people rule! Let the people speak, law enforcement needs to stop wasting time on us.

People in Maine who have read the law are not celebrating. Many adults prefer to make their personal medical decisions in the privacy of their doctor's office rather than leaving it up to state agencies, politicians and law enforcement. DHS now has more authority than doctors in deciding which patients are valid, which medical conditions are acceptable and how much medicine is sufficient. Here's what medical marijuana really looks like in Maine today: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iqt1Pec7UxY -- but do not despair, Maine Vocals is already circulating a citizens initiative petition to fix this bad law and another to end cannabis prohibition altogether in Maine. The roots go much deeper than the drug czar,he's just on the payroll and as long as he gets that check and sees those high numbers his brain will focus more on what he sees is best for him instead of thinking past the glitter and gold. We can never stop this unless we get off their payroll, our little allowence we get to buy things that the governement has provided for our entertainment. we as a human population are sacrificing to much for the little comforts they give us, mostly fear and then tough love rinse and repeat, imagine getting paid under the table ALL THE TIME like it should be. We need to make our own goods and sell them in our own communtities, keep every cent we work for, start using hemp, deconstruct the things we have built to make the Earth hurt, reinvent transportation and start creating energy that doesnt cause cancer. Please hear the call, they can't do this to us forever, people will see. Babylon will fall!

I live in Maine and I think that this law was a long time coming. Maine already has a pretty light law on getting caugt with weed, but i just think that this will help to get it legal all the way around.
