Lincecum, Like Phelps Before Him, Regrets His Actions

Thu, Nov 19, 2009 6:00 pm

Tim Lincecum, the San Francisco Giants’ star pitcher and recently outed stoner, has won the 2009 Cy Young Award. Lincecum was the reigning Cy Young Award winner and has proven to be the most dominant pitcher in the National League over the past two years.

Last month, Lincecum was stopped for speeding and got busted with 3.3 grams of pot and a pipe. The pending plea agreement (which will be presented to a judge December 22) would drop the possession charge and cost the pitcher $372 in fines.

After receiving the prestigious award, the pitcher did not take questions about his marijuana charges. However, according to MercuryNews, the pitcher read the following statement via conference call:

“I made a mistake and regret my actions earlier this month in Washington. I want to apologize to the Giants organization and to the fans. I know that as a professional athlete I have a responsibility to conduct myself appropriately both on and off the field. I certainly have learned a valuable lesson through all of this and I promise to do better in the future. In the meantime, I am focused on preparing for the 2010 season.”

Much like another phenomenally successful athlete, Michael Phelps, Tim Lincecum had an opportunity to address marijuana as a safe and enjoyable substance that in no way infringed on his ability to compete at the highest level. However, much like Phelps, Lincecum refrained from becoming pot’s poster boy.

Of course, the situations are quite different – Phelps was at a party and Lincecum was caught in his car. Still, both instances occurred during periods in which the athletes were in the off-season from competition. Additionally, officers at the scene indicated that Lincecum was not under the influence at the time of the traffic stop.

Here’s a look back at the statement Phelps gave Matt Lauer regarding his run-in with a bong at a college party earlier this year:

“It was an awful judgment. And, really, the people I hurt is my family, clearly, my friends, the close people around me and most importantly, the fans. And I realize that that hurt a lot of people … It was a bad mistake. I mean, we all know what you and I are talking about. It's a stupid mistake. You know, bad judgment. And it's something that I have to, and I want to teach other people not to make that mistake.”

Perhaps someday a successful sports figure will have the courage to stand up for recreational marijuana use. Too bad it couldn’t have been one of the two most dominant athletes in their respective sports.

athletes happen to have contracts that dictate no drug use. if they do drugs, they lose not just money but a job as well. I feel him saying no to marijuana for now (cause he didnt say he wont do it again) is good for the movement. shows people arent attached to it more than their life activities and goals.

Yeah!

There are some things in life more important
than smoking pot.

a college baseball player

in response to gstlab3 post about jocks, i know it was posted awhile ago, but something you might like to know is lincecum is prob one of the smartest ball players you'll come accross. his father was an aerodynamic engineer and studied manny successful pitchers and designed tim's delivery in which he perfects with various workouts. at 5'11" he has the pitching stride of someone 6'5" due to phenominal flexibilty. im not saying youre wrong about most "jocks" on not being too intellectual but in this case i believe you're way off and lincecum can definately "think" for himself.

on another note i dont see why it would matter if an mlb player was a recreational smoker. i mean historically speaking you had guys like mickey mantle who'd perform at a high level completely hung over from a night of drinking. where as marijuana with no hangovers would not affect your performance the day following a night of smoking. also considering lincecum is a pitcher he throws twice a week. as long as its not performance enhancing and not completely detrimentle to performance in a short term sense at least whats the big deal?

Ever since 1937 when the FEDs made Cannabis illegal nationwide , a war not only against the people but against the minds of the masses concerning the evils of the best plant known to man has raged.

For him to have come forward and told the public theres nothing wrong with Cannabis, a media frenzy would've encircled his life. No doubt he would've been kicked out of baseball for life. It would take many athletes at once to all step forward because there is power in numbers. Stepping forward one at a time really wouldn't do anything.

REPENT AND MAY THE LORD GOD HAVE MERCY UPON YOUR RETCHED SOULS.

NO DELUISIONS OF GRANDURE OR WANT OF EARTHLY POSESSIONS HERE., JUST AN OVERWHELMING DESIRE TO SPREAD THE TRUTH AND TO GIVE IT TO MANKIND ONE LAST TIME.

USE YOUR TIME HERE ON EARTH WISELY AND USE YOUR FAITH TO SUSTAIN YOU AND DO UNTO OTHERS AS YOU WOULD HAVE THEM DO UNTO YOU.

DO NOT LET YOUR POLITICIANS AND LEADERS SWAY YOU FROM THE TRUTH FOR THEY SEEK THE EARTHLY TREASURE AND KNOW NOTHING ELSE OF THE DIVINE NATURE OF THE POWER OF THIS SPIRITUAL REALM.
THE EARTH CANNOT BE POSSESED AND CANNOT BE OWNED BY ANY MAN OR GROUP OF MEN.,NOR CAN IT BE RULED OVER IN SPITE OF THE COMMANDMENTS AND THE DIVINE NATURAL LAWS THAT HAVE BEEN PROVIDED AS USEFULL TOOLS AND NOTHING ELSE CAN BE SAID OR DONE TO TEACH YOU ANYMORE OF THEM.

THE KNOWLEDGE OF FREEDOM AND LIBERTY ITSELF IS IN PERIL!!!!!!

WE MUST STAND AS A NEW CREATION OF PEACE AND LOVE AND STAND UP FOR TRUTH AND KNOWLEDGE.,OR LOOSE OUR HUMANITY TO THE ENSLAVERS THAT HAVE DONE EVERYTHING TO STRIP US OF OUR FREEDOM AND HAVE TRIED TO REPLACE OUR GOD WITH THEIR GOVERNMENTS!!!!!!

Nov 23 2009, 8:06 pm

Im sure Tim and Michael arent the only high lvl athletes that smoke pot. Ricky Williams ring a bell? LeBron James of the Clevland Cacs has tried it, Calvin Johnson and Percy Harvin have done it. And when they are confronted about it, they are treated like criminals. I dont understand why Marijuana is a banned substance in professional sports other than it is illegal in the country to possess..

Nov 23 2009, 2:40 pm

To Isreal shut the fuck up. No one wants to hear u talk shit bout Obama. Get a fuckin life. He is the President now and yea he's black. If he was white there wouldn't be a problem. But we have had a lot of white presidents and the US is still fucked up. So until ur punk ass wins the election and start making changes do everybody a favor and shut the fuck up already. So we can get back to talking bout how weed doesn't effect athletes cause Phelps is a pot head and a olympic gold medalist. And our 2 time Cy Young winner gets blowed too.

First off baseball is boring.. feel free to disagree, I just dont want to watch a bunch of guys chewing tobacco waiting for 1 guy to try to hit a ball with a stick.
And if someone chooses to be a pro. athlete AND smoke pot, that person CAN'T get caught.. That's when he gets fined, put on FOX news, have a high times article about him, etc. Anyways, I do feel bad for the guy because nobody deserves a bad rep. from burnin' some ganj.

WE ARE TALKING ABOUT JOCKS LET US NOT FORGET THAT POINT.
THESE ARE THE SAME KIDS IN SCHOOL FOR WHAT REASON STILL EVADES ME BUT THESE ARE THE ONES THAT EITHER GET INTO THE PRO SPORTS ARENA OR THEY END UP AS COPS OR MILITARY CHUM FOR THE ELITISTS TO WASTE ON THE BATTLE FIELDS OF WAR.
THE REASON I BRING THIS UP IS BECAUSE FROM MY EXPIERIANCE "JOCKS" ARE NOT THE ONES USUALLY CARRYING GPA OF 4.0 AND GRADUATING EARLY TO START A CAREER IN PHYSICS OR MEDICAL SCIENCE WICH REQUIRES SOME GOOD MEMORY SKILLS AND PARROTING ABILITIES WHEN TESTS AND EXAMES ARE GIVEN.
THESE POOR CHAPS DO NOT KNOW HOW TO THINK VERY INDEPENDANTLY WHEN IT COMES TO THINGS SUCH AS POLITICS OR HUMAN RIGHTS THE CONSTITUTION etc..,
THUS THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN "TEAM" SPORTS AND THE LIKELYHOOD OF JOINING THE RANKS OF THE MILLITARY FORCES OR WORSE THE POLICE FORCE!!!
YEAH WHEN THE PRO SPORTS CAREER DOES'NT WORK OUT THIS IS WHERE THESE GUYS END UP.,IT'S JUST A BASIC OBSERVATION THAT I HAVE MADE.
SO DO'NT LOOK FOR PHELPS OR ANY OTHER SPORTS HERO TO ACTUALLY "THINK" TO STAND UP ON THEIR OWN WITHOUT TEAM BACKING AND THE BIG MONEY AND PREEMINANCE THAT COULD BRING TO THE CAUSE OF LEGALIZATION.
DO NOT FAULT THE JOCKS., THAT IS JUST THE WAY IT IS.,
SOME OF US ARE BUILT DIFFERANTLY AND THAT IS WHAT MAKES HUMAN BEINGS SO INTERESTING AND PROBLEMATIC AT THE SAME TIME.,
OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THE GROUP THINK AND THE MOB RULE WE HAVE LET OUR COUNTRY SUBCOME TO.,
WE ARE IN WAY MORE TROUBLE THAN THESE LITTLE ISSUES BRING.,IT IS OUR BASIC FREEDOMS AND LIBERTIES THAT ARE BEING STOLEN FROM US WITH THE GUISE OF BEING FOR OUR OWN GOOD AND DO'NT FORGET THIS ONE EVER "IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN."
ANYTIME YOU HEAR THE GOVERNMENT TELL YOU IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN START QUESTIONING THEM INTENSIVELY!!!
JUST SAY "no" TO GOVERNMENT TELLING YOU WHAT TO DO AND WHAT NOT TO DO.,AND TO STAY THE FUCK AWAY FROM OUR BODIES AND OUR MINDS!!!!
GROW YOUR OWN, FREE YOUR MIND, AND FREE THE PLANET!!!!!!!!!

think-ahead

Nov 20 2009, 6:36 pm

Jesus Timmy,
When you see the red lights flashing, slow down, open all of the windows and continue to drive until you find a safe place to stop. Put the pipe back in a plastic bag, pop a mint and talk to the cop. By the time he gets to you - the smoke will have cleared and it becomes a non-issue. Don't stop smoking though - it's what makes you throw the "high" ball no one can hit. Congrads on the 2nd Cy Young award - smokers rejoice!

Nov 20 2009, 4:25 pm

i agree with the person who said this is a thinly veiled "fuck you i'm gonna keep smoking" response. think about if from his perspective...he's a star athlete with money coming in from all over the place. i'm sure he just wants this issue to go away. i wish he or phelps or super bowl MVP santonio holmes actually made a point about the ridiculousness of prohibition and the misguided notion that cannabis (not calling it "marijuana" anymore because whitey want's the drug to sound "dirty and mexican") impairs athletic performance. the fact that lincecum even got busted in the first place is proof enough that things are out of whack. don't hate on the kid for trying to live his life.

various scenariose

Nov 20 2009, 3:58 pm

I think what he meant to write was:

Of the various scenariose-
“Prohibition of my constitutional rights is an awful state of affairs. And, really, the people I the federal government hurt is my not only myself, and my family, but clearly, my friends, the close people around me and everyone, including my fans. And I realize that that hurt a lot of people … It was a bad mistake to take our freedom away from us to take part in the all healing herb which is the "safest substance known to man". I mean, we all know what you and I are talking about. The federal government made a stupid mistake. You know, bad judgment. And it's something that I have to, and I want to teach other people not to make that mistake.” Leson learned. Don't live in the usa if you want freedom.

Solomon Funt

Nov 20 2009, 1:29 pm

Lincecum's statement is about as "I ain't gonna stop smoking, pal" as a guy in the spotlight can reasonably get.

He *should* regret having it in his glove compartment.

Nov 20 2009, 12:57 pm

They are both hypocrites! Just a couple more people afraid to stand up for their rights and what they believe in! But unfortunately the possibility of losing a few dollars makes some people tuck their tails between their legs and run and hide! Fake ass people!

Ganja Kid

Nov 19 2009, 10:33 pm

i know a lot of retards dont know this but nothing would change even if he came out and defended marijuana. Do any of you honestly think that if phelps took a stand or lincecum for that matter and said "hey guys its not so bad i smoke and it doesnt affect my athletic performance that all politicians are gonna go hey wait a minute phelps says its alright? well im changing the law! it doesnt work that way. Politicians defend what they think voters want them to defend (keeping weed as an illegal "drug"). phelps and lincecum are not defenders of weed its not their job there not out there trying to defend pot because its not their place
