CBS Rejects Marijuana Legalization Ad from NORML

Fri, Feb 05, 2010 7:53 pm

Share |

CBS has rejected an advertisement from the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws intended for a digital billboard – the CBS Super Screen – located in Manhattan’s Times Square. In emails obtained by HIGH TIMES, the marketing firm Neutron Media informed NORML that the network would not approve the ad. A Neutron Media employee told NORML Executive Director Allen St. Pierre, “If CBS changes their morals we will let you know.”

According to Ray Shapira, Neutron Media Vice President of Event and Screen Marketing, it was he and not CBS that made the call to reject the ad because it was “too political.” Shapira says he made the decision based on “the instructions and general guidelines of CBS Outdoor” – the segment of CBS in charge of outdoor advertising.

However, St. Pierre believes the response falls in line with a pattern of rejection from CBS. “The fact is, this is the fourth time in eight years that CBS has stymied NORML.”

CBS did not respond to phone calls and an email message.

The 15-second advertisement in question shows a bare tree that becomes verdant as marijuana leaves with dollar symbols pop up and attach to the branches. The ad then states “Money Can Grow On Trees!” and concludes with the slogan “Legalize Marijuana – Billions in Taxes.” According to St. Pierre, NORML “wanted to make it clear during tough economic times that taxing marijuana makes sense.” HIGH TIMES has obtained a copy of the ad in question (posted above).

CBS has made headlines recently based on the decision to sell airtime during Super Bowl XLIV to Focus on the Family, an evangelical organization known for its socially conservative stances including its strong opposition to abortion. While the precise content of the Super Bowl ad has not been revealed, it will reportedly feature college football star Tim Tebow and his mother, Pam, discussing Mrs. Tebow’s decision to ignore medical advice and give birth to Tebow rather than have an abortion.

The issue is contentious because it is the first advocacy ad to appear during the Super Bowl. In 2008, CBS changed a policy that prevented the network from airing ads from advocacy groups. As this is the first Super Bowl broadcast by CBS since the policy change, advocating opinions on social issues during the NFL’s – and advertising’s – biggest day is now, ostensibly, fair game.

Because of this, St. Pierre feels the notion that CBS doesn’t accept political ads – the reason given for the NORML ad’s rejection – is “patently incorrect.” According to St. Pierre, “both Focus on the Family and NORML are 501(c)(3) organizations, the only difference is in what we advocate.”

Nonetheless, Shapira says he would have prevented any “political ad” from appearing on the billboard regardless of the message – and that includes Focus on the Family.

St. Pierre claims “CBS not allowing a free exchange of ideas is one more reason why prohibition has lasted so long.”

A second NORML ad (the mockup version pictured below), which would have made its way into the CBS Super Screen rotation a few weeks after the original spot, would have examined 2009 police arrests records with an emphasis on racial disparity in marijuana arrests. Its slogan would have been, “If President Obama grew up in NYC, today he might be known as ‘Barry the drug criminal.’”

WTF and Granny You two are the losers. You come in here talking about pot smokers being losers, non workers and good for nothing, when in reality its you who have nothing to offer to any one that has a mind and knows how to think for them selves. Ive smoked all my adult life, and I am now a senior citizen. I have worked all my life to secure myself the right to retire and lay around if I want to do so. I have never in my life seen as many ignorant people as their is about cannabis. I will go as far as saying you that you two probably drink liquor on a daily basis, and your probably drunk right now.So please do yourselves a favor and stop talking about pot smokers and things you know nothing about, have another shot of whiskey and go pass out. To every one else peace brothers and sisters, grow your own, live free and prosper.

The facts of the matter are that our country is run by a superficial front government that uses its influence to shape and mold the country and the people. We stoners have the "bad" habit of free thinking, which tends to cause the control freaks in DC to have a little contempt for us. I can understand the anger and dislike for us, but why is it we have to be the ones not thinking clearly when anyone with there eyes half open can see our government lies to us and controls what information we have access to? i can agree with some of the anti smokers comments. For example THC as with all stimulants, does have a effect on motor functions. The stories of people on here who say they drive consistently high on THC with no problems and calls this evidence of how safe it is,is just wrong. I have an alcoholic uncle who drives drunk all the time and has no problems too, but these are more than likely a snafu of human genetics, and by some grace it doesn't affect your motor skills as greatly. I think its great all of you who emailed your disagreements to CBS and have pride that us stoners are finally standing up for our rights to use mother natures medicines. And before anyone jumps my ass about being a "tree hugger" yes i smoke, and yes i work. Ive even served in iraq in the US marines (Semper Fi!!!). So i am not some under educated pot head who sleeps on his moms couch. One thing always to remember guys is even though people jump in here with conflicting opinions, dont jump there ass for them, after all there just expressing themselves just as we want to do. The way to our freedom is not by reacting to opposing beliefs with hostility but with acceptance. This is the only real way for our cause to be taken seriously. And to all the ultra radical 420 guys, talking about pulling out the guns, and taking are rights back by force. Take it from some one who knows the US military, a violent answer will only bring more suffering and hardship for us peaceful minded people. So just keep your head up, and just remember "Smile" because its hard to hate a man for his beliefs when he only offers kindness. Have a good one guys, and keep up the good work.

Just found this in my inbox and thought it was worth sharing.

VICTORY! CBS Will Accept NORML Marijuana Legalization Ad

I’ve got big news!
You and more than 8000 others sent letters to CBS protesting the company’s decision to reject a marijuana legalization ad produced by NORML for a Times Square billboard, and we just heard that CBS has reversed its decision and will accept the ad!
I got the news yesterday from a senior CBS official and I think this is a great example of how we can take action online and get real-world results. So thank you to everyone who sent a letter and helped spread the word. You can read the update on our blog here: http://criminaljustice.change.org/blog/view/cbs_reverses_decision_agrees_to_run_pro-marijuana_ad
I hope you will consider starting your own petitions here at Change.org as you find issues where you’d like to have an impact. Anyone can start a petition in just couple of minutes and you can learn how here: http://www.change.org/petition
Once again, thank you for taking action and helping to hold CBS accountable.

Where did all of you ignorant anti cannabis people come from. You all act like you know what your talking about, but I will bet that you have never investaged it at all. All you do is listen to all the propaganda the feds put out about the effects of cannabis. If cannabis were legalized, the big drug companies of america would loose billions of dollars every year and thats the reason its illegal, not because it harmful. Alcohol is the worst drug ever put on this planet, and has killed millions of innocent people, because a drunk driver crashed into there vechile and killed every one inside there vechile, but I dont see you knocking the gaint corporations that produce it. But you condem a plant thats been on this earth since the begining of time. Read your damn history of this country, Our first president was a hemp farmer, yes George Washington grow hemp, its fibers can be used to make thousands of earth friendly products. But you know nothing about that do you. You people are why this country of ours is in the shape its in today. So stop acting like you know what your talking about, and leave the people who want to be able to live there lives the way they want alone, as was the reason for the revolution in 1776, a government of the people for the people, not a government of the government for the government.... Get a life, and do some research, then you can speak your mind. and to all the good people who enjoy this wonderful plant, keep spreading the word one day we will all be free of this government persecution we live with today. I was just thinking about different Countries customs. Some countries people kiss each other on both cheeks which seems out of ordinary to me.
In this country it is customary for people to occasionally nod at one another in passing.
But heaven forbid if a person lowers there body too far. The haters would rather send people to war over a custom. It shows the limited intelligence of people here in the states.

Somewhere on this site, someone has posted the same tired reteric about how a person can not perform well under the influence of weed at their workplace or something to that effect.

I just wanted to give my input on the subject. On prescription pain pill bottles it states something like "be carefull when driving or operating machinery untill you know how your body reacts to this drug".

The same thing is for weed. Some people can handle it, and some can not. I have personally found that to be true for me. I know I perform best when I am feeling well. I should also point out that I have never had a accident in a car, or my bicycle. So please stop the nonsense you weed haters out there.

Feb 15 2010, 2:39 pm

I agree.

Common courtesy. That is what is lacking in this nation.

When our President showed common courtesy by bowing to someone in another country, the warmongering haters in this country jumped all over him. The haters would rather our sons and daughters fight and be killed in their hateful battles than to show some common courtesy.

I'd bend down and kiss someones feet if I thought it was custom, and or it could prevent wars where potentially millions could be killed.

Some people. They don't realize that they are part of the problems if they aren't part of the solutions.

Calming people down in Iran is a much better solution than what has been done though in my opinion. Its just common sense. No pun intended:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9cNup5VuP2c
Its called man in a hurry.

What I think is that people in the world make up various scary scenarios in their minds and they think their fears will come true. Why? Why not think up cures for the fears we may produce in our minds. Why not look up at the beautiful stars and think of them as white holes or something like that. Maybe space is the black hole. Maybe we have the ability to star travel. What if the stars we see are where we can visit? What is wrong with dreaming good thoughts? Why must people always for the sake of promoting their products, always use the fear and intimidation cards?
Grow up people. Life is here to enjoy. Throw down your weapons, and love one another.

I like to think the best of folks.

But last nite, I was listening to short wave, listening for messages of encouragement from a church show, and heard messages of hell and damnation, so I changed the reception to am, and came in on the middle of a coast show from art bell, and I have yet to know what was said, only that it was a bout some one named officer x from october 22 1997, but it sounded like another doom and gloom show. The tv was broadcasting something about what would you do if you had the choice to push someone off a bridge and kill that person to save 4 others. More doom and gloom. On another tv show the other day from harvard was a lecture on the same thing. It is though the leaders are trying their hardest to turn its citizens against one another. What a shame. The news on pbs it seems is too often talking about our neighboring countries being some kind of nuclear threat. In fact I have heard the word "nuclear threat so many times, It reminds me of goober on andy griffith on that episode where he kept spouting off "citizens arreyest!" - "citizens arreyest!", only the tv spokes people are yelling "nuclear threyet!" - "nuclear threyet!", which would be funny if it weren't that people die in their wars they create.
If iran or any country is angry at us or their neighboring countries, then why don't our leaders show they do believe in GOD, and go there and make friends with them rather than play the savage card of sanctions and war?

Nope. My lips are sealed. I don't want to be labeled a "nuclear threyet!". It seems these are sad times here at high times.

Love out to those with a heart.

Am I just not getting it? Is everyone running their life on fear of thy neighbors?

What do you all think of the idea of seeking out places where people congregate to close their minds in glorious ignorance and when the building is at capacity bursting in and littering the place with pro-cannabis propaganda then running like hell before anyone could realize what was happening? I mean just blitzkrieg their minds and bail before they can mount a retaliation. It tickled the hell out of me. (I used a church, but would love ideas for other targets :D).

By the way. My state is Tennessee, so if you are a resident and have not yet taken action I recommend getting the lead out. We only have 3 more days to flood lawmakers with our instructions. Go to Norml.org to find a pre-written letter you can email to legislators before they meet on Tuesday Feb. 16th and encourage your friends and family to do the same. This is far too important to let slide.

And I've just discovered (through the NORML website)a petition "targeting the CBS Corporation and demanding the network to reverse their decision", which can be found at http://www.change.org/actions/view/demand_cbs_reverse_decision_declaring_pro-marijuana_ad_too_political.

Isn't it illegal to advertise one thing then sell another? Bait and switch I believe it's called. -good point (my Caucasian arse)-

Square does not have a good point. He has hate-filled babble. The reason cannabis has been illegal for so long is because folks who stand up are pulled out of society and treated like animals (thus making us pick and choose our battles very, very carefully). John Sinclaire-sentenced to ten years in federal prison for possession of two cannabis cigarettes- comes to mind. There are countless others that I won't bother naming because you're too lazy to look it up anyway (after all, it's so much easier to come here once in a while and recite the same old b.s. isn't it?). How many people do you know who are willing to stand alone facing a decade of rape and beatings?

Granny doesn't deserve praise. She deserves ridicule for continuing to spit out tired rhetoric, which is devoid of fact and serves no purpose other than to belittle those who have the intestinal fortitude to think for themselves.

...And for your consideration. After finding out that my state is about to vote on legislation that will legalized cannabis for medicinal use, I spent my day busting my hump on the streets raising awareness. When was the last time you did your civil/patriotic duty? And spewing hatred and fascist propaganda on High Times doesn't count, you Nazi's.

Real world wisdom-"snicker"
I'm bored so here goes. Socialogical studies show that many individuals in society will agree with the masses even though they themselves do not agree. Media conglomerates use this to lead society into believing what they feel is the "truth". This is the fault of the viewers for being sheep but it still needs to be acknowledged that presenting yourself as a credible source to inform society of what is going on in society is a serious situation that should warrant some accountability, especially when millions of dollars are devoted every year discovering new ways to manipulate people into taking in their information. A good portion of the taxpayers in this country, smokers and non, want to know the whole truth and not the edited version. It is precicely situations such as the CBS ordeal that prevents public knowledge of the benefits of grass, thus insuring a certain point of view is maintained. As far as lawsuits go, lawsuits are not won with fact and fairness in this justice system. If it were a fair and just system I believe, just an opinion, there would be many more pro marijuana lawsuits but as it stands today, there is no point in filing a lawsuit that is almost guarunteed to lose because of current taboos and opinions rather than the facts at hand. There is some real world wisdom for you.

Mabye organized religion passes it out along with the "morals" being preached. (pause for effect or useless, godless hippie stoner thought). Anyway, CBS should at least post disclaimers stating "news is one sided and we will ot allow conflicting ideology on our station." This would at least allow people the option to make an informed decision whether or not to watch. This brings to light the questions of motive. Why condem this particular drug while allowing advertisment of all others. It is blatently contradictive to the point of a drug free America to allow some drugs and not others. Also, can we agree that no one here knows everyone that smokes grass, drinks, beats their wives or touches their angry children so why all the ridiculous slander. It is pointless banther that veers from the issues.

I have a question for you as well. If CBS was entirely within their rights to deny NORML airtime why did they bother citing the reason for their decision to be because "it was too political"? Why not just say no outright? Could it be that they knew they would need some kind of excuse to hide behind?

Sinistry

Feb 11 2010, 6:02 pm

I asked that very same question in another post (not sure if it was on this specific page, though). I hope NORML does turn to the courts for a ruling on what is an obviously discriminatory act. Time will tell.

Do you hate everyone or just free-thinkers and environmentalists? Does your post reflect your personal opinion or are you just regurgitating what your daddy used to say back in the Nixon years before he got drunk and touched you (then beat you because he could not get erect)? You've shown us all that you feel strongly about the topic, but have not indicated how you came to those conclusions. For your consideration, not all cannabis users are hippies, jobless or even lazy. Regarding the do something about it comment, see my previous post and prepare yourself with for the new world that will be here sooner than you think.

You're completely disregarding the fact that I am a citizen, not a media outlet responsible for informing the masses. If money can buy air time to preach anti-drug and anti-abortion propaganda then it should be able to buy airtime that supports contradicting ideas (that's how capitalism works). If CBS wants to drop it's news segment and stick to simple entertainment I'll have no problem with what they advertise, but as long as they claim to be a source for news they should broadcast the truth about what is happening in our country in regard to cannabis law, not simple air the news they want people to know.

Feb 11 2010, 1:47 pm

I have the feeling I am being baited into posting this, but I feel so strongly about the topic, I feel I should post something.
Superstitions are silly. God which is Love is not. Of course every country has a different name for God, but I think all the countries are basically speaking the same universal language for the most part.

Your post at the bottom at Feb 5 2010, 10:07 pm I agreed with until I got to where you wrote: [...In this day and age people actually believe in the fantasy of a god. Pathetic....]

Why would you write that? Are you just playing? I do hope you don't belittle peoples beliefs in God. Where would you be without love? I believe we are here to comfort one another, not agitate. At least we shouldn't agitate about such an important topic.
I know its fun to needle each other. Its what makes life fun sometimes, but lets try to pull together and not divide each other by poking fun at each other about such an important topic. And its hard for me to believe its cool to needle each other in these forums anyway cause of the war against us. Lets not forget about the other wars around the globe where people are dying. I believe that lack of love for one another is the cause of all wars, and disease. Its just being mean to say that love is pathetic. You surely don't see the connection of God and love.
I believe it is this observation of the love we see and feel around us in our daily lives that is the most beautiful of all of our senses. God which is love is a wonderfully good thing. Why the need for some people to say they are against God? Do you feel somehow superior? Do you feel it makes you stronger?
Of course atheism is a myth. But so what? lol That's a good thing too.
We need love♥ which is the form of God we have the ability to observe. I have heard it said though that people won't realize this until they are ready to. So maybe you aren't ready.

I'm not pretending to know all the answers, but I do know what works for me, and I am sure that this belief is not a bad one, cause we naturally want to be kind to those who we love, and if everyone would just be kind to one another, well, you get the picture...

While I agree with you Square, its the children and granchildren of the hippies who are the lazy potheads with no jobs.
They all have some type of three-letter behavior disorder and thats likely the result of the chromosome damage their elders suffered from smoking pot.

So what if its 2010, or a new time? Marijuana will always remain illegal for centuries to come. You guys are living a pipe dream if you think pot use will become legal.

Some people, who most likely never smoked pot, seem to think it's an all encompassing lifestyle. Yeah, maybe in college in the 70's. But as employed adult, it's not a lifestyle, just a part of life. Like after work, maybe have a beer or two, a couple tokes, and that seems to do most people my age(58)very well. It's a good little giggle in my back yard. I wish more senior citizens would open up to it. When your physical abilities decline, you can kind of "get over it" with a little daydream. Temporary, yes, but that is what relief is, a temporary crutch 'til you have the urge again. My job keeps me grounded, paying the bills makes my life go 'round. I use my own judgement, that's why I have a brain. We're always hearing about the government taking more control of our personal lives--well they've did that to me since I first puffed one my freshmen year at college. I can only say"join the club", great ain't it? I have many friends in the professions who still do and don't use other illegal substances. It's a matter of choice and responsibility

If they want you to place an anti-weed ad on the side of your house and you refuse ... would you be stifling their PERCIEVED right to inform the public of something they feel stongly about ? The answer to that is a resounding NO .
See how that works ?

I am an American soldier currently deployed overseas fighting for the freedoms out nation provides us. Obviously being as how I am in the military I have not and will not smoke marijuana, because I feel if I'm stoned I might have a slower reaction time to dangerous threats. However, as a previous smoker who chose to quit, I can not for the life of me understand why I can read comments stating that marijuana smokers are uneducated, lazy, and essentially subhuman. Obviously I am able to get a job, serve my country as well. I would like to think that when this is all said and done I will be able to sink into my rocking chair when I'm older thinking about the days when I was young, while lighting up a joint. Yes, I have a college education, yes I have had great jobs, all while being under the influence (I've probably sold you a car at some point). -Real World Wisdom- I agree that CBS is not America. However, they have taken up the responsibility to serve as a venue for Americans to get information, yet they've chosen to censor the information that the masses receive. This is not responsible media. By refusing to allow this ad to be aired they have impeded on NORML's right to inform Americans of the potential benefits cannabis could have on our nation. If CBS refused to run ads that had any political content (such as anti-drug ads, anti-abortion ads, religious propaganda, etc.) then I would have no problem with this decision. However, that isn't the case. CBS wants to be the media when it suits them and a private organization when it doesn't and that is the problem I have with this issue. So while they didn't directly impede on my rights they have chosen to censure the voices of millions and censorship of truth denies us the liberty to make a choice.

This is the article that i wrote to my local newspaper...and they actually printed it...check it out....
September 4th 2007....
Ive done research on the uses of hemp and marijuana. We believe that if we used hemp for oil, paper, clothing, food, fiberboard, diapers, insulation, carpets and many other things, it would be better for the environment.
There are more than 25,000 uses for hemp, and its all natural. If we started using hemp today, for everything, we would stop, or at least slow down, global warming.
We also would cut down fewer trees and wouldnt destroy forests.
One acre of hemp can produce as much usable fiber as four acres of trees and two acres of cotton.
Trees cut down to make paper take 50 to 500 years to grow, while hemp can be cultivated in as little as 100 days and can yeild four times more paper over a 20 year period.
Also, hemp paper is longer-lasting than wood pulp, stronger, and acid and chlorine free. It is estimated that chlorine causes up to 10 percent of all cancers.
We also could use hemp for fuel. If we started using hemp for that purpose, we could stop using corn for fuel.
Hemp can producce 10 times more methanol than corn. Also, hemp fuel burns clean. Petroleum causes acid rain due to sulfar pollution.
Now to cannabis, marijuana:
Its said that no one ever died from marijuana use. However, people die every day as the result of alcohol, caffeine, prescription drugs, over the counter medications like aspirin.
Cannabis research has demonstrated therapeutic value and complete safety in the treatment of many health problems, including asthma, glaucoma, nausea in AIDS and cancer patients, epilepsy, stress, migraines, rheumatism and arthritis, PMS, depression, constipation, and thats just to name a few.
Up until 1933, when the use U.S. government declared marijuana illegal, doctors used it in childbirth, it also helps with morning sickness.
So, the next time you see or hear a commercial criminalizing marijuana, think about the possibilities for a better, cleaner, safer world and that its not harmful. Its actually good for us and our environment.
People shouldnt let the government fool them. Lets decriminalize cannabis for a better future....

this is bullshit. people need to stop being so fucking stupid. half the people that fight against marijuana havent even expierenced it. besides the fact that its a fucking plant, just like tabacco, it has absoloutly NO DOCUMENTED DEATHS (unlike tabacco). How many people die, lose family (physically or mentally) to alcohol each day? Drinking and driving? Its bacteria that people are pumping into thier body to get messed up beyond recognition. The legal system makes no sense now a days. And no one(with the legal power) is open minded enough to think otherwise. and like people below me have said about many prison inmates are there simply on a marijuana charge?!?!?! smoking weed is no reason to be subjected to charlie manson wannabees all day

anonymous

Feb 9 2010, 12:28 pm

If they legalize marijuana it will decrease the profits they make off of DOC offenders throughout the US. Medicinal is 12 states right. The federal government gives so much funding for inmates on drug convictions. I've been to prison and so many people are there for pot it's crazy. I think if they felt they could profit more by legalization then it would have already happened. Just my opinion but I'm open to hear any other theories. RIGHT ON...

Granny. The sad fact is that the reason many stoners don't have jobs is because of the the current oppressive tyranny we live in. Even the most low level, mundane job out there typically has a pre-employment drug screen that must be passed before we can even go to work. Pay close attention to that. PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG SCREEN! This means that how well we can do the job is irrelevant because prejudice trumps effort, every time. What should make you sick is that good, honest people are suffering because people like you think you know what's better for them than they do. If you don't like marijuana, then don't use it. Stick with your alcohol and tobacco and see who has the last laugh.

My 2 favorite quotes regarding Prohibition:

Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Party Minister of Propaganda

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”
---------------

Abraham Lincoln:

“Prohibition goes beyond the bounds of reason in that it attempts to control a man's appetite by legislation and makes crimes out of things that are not crimes.”

Dear Granny

Im a state certified EMT-Basic. As I am in this position, I am in no position to smoke because I have to take care of patients such as your self. Marijuana is completely safe and your missing the point. Legalization for taxes, health, and safe recreation for responsible adults. I know several nurses and doctors that advocate the use in marijuana in both medical and recreational use. I may not smoke now, but after retirement I may as well do so because I will have earned and worked for it. 'Pot heads' like myself are not sitting on our asses but doing something prob. more significant and meaningful and help to society and our Mother Earth.

To Granny,
I have been smoking pot since 1972. I am educated, employed and have been paying taxes my whole life. The government has been brain washing people like you for years. It is nothing but a waste of our money to keep cannabis illegal. I spend more on pot than most people do for their cars. If I did not spend this money on the black market it would go to our economy, multiply this by millions of people.....
By the way, back then in the 70's before they had all the lables for ADD etc, they had me on perscription meds, with all the side effects. SO I STARTED SMOKING POT! WORKS GREAT
SMOKE POT
GO SAINTS GO WIN THE SUPERBOWL

the people own the airwaves
the people should be represented by those who use our airwaves in a fair and equal fashion
the media has a repsonsibility to tell the truth to the American people and we do have laws that prohibit government laced propaganda.

People who own their homes are limited in what they can and cant put on it.

They say cannabis is too political? Why is asking for the truth to be told too political? lmao. so is war. so is healthcare. so is election time. so are the stories that make people fear one another on a daily basis.

If our media denies us the truth and the right to be heard, and only allows those priveledges to those in power, what shall our recourse be? I think this is where our rights to bear arms comes in and allows us to use them against all enemies, foreign and domestic.
Political terrorism and using propaganda to promote political terrorism, is still terrorism.

I know this, i'm less afraid of " terrorist" than i am of fat cats and greed.

BTW, not all people here are as dumb as some people here would like us to believe they are.
Shit, i dare say none of us are any smarter than our deepest ignorance.

Can’t wait for marijuana to be legal so we can smoke and forget the many uses of cannabis that would ensure an anarchist state…. big business and big government will ONLY legalize it once they can find a way to keep it under control.
A practically free source of food, fiber, fuel, constructon material AND medicine??? Power would become so decentralized that really anybody with some small scale equipment, land and the know how could be COMPLETELY autonomous from the society in which we find ourselves, but then nobody will be able to tell anyone else what to do….. of course anybody with any real say in this country would soon be out of a job and powerless, and why would they want that?

why are these people so stuck in the dark ages?!?!?!?!!
looking back to prohibition seems archaic and makes government really, really seem obsolete and desperate.

we are trying to end a literal WAR on the citizens of the united states here and cbs wants the hellfire and injustice to just keep going and going and going. its like a "flower war" that the aztecs had where they were always at war with a state they were in charge of just because they had to keep the blood sacrifices rolling into the capital city. this is the same exact thing. i'm done with it. im at my wits end. we have all grown up in this environment and it is not healthy and is not a sustainable infrastructure for the growth and vitality of our country. if we are to survive we have to make a change to our environment and how we view our fellow americans. we expect everyone to be responsible for a ton of shit nowadays and yet we arent responsible to take some cannabis or a religious sacrament for God's sake? i resent being viewed as a child and as a criminal by the federal government. if they expect to stay in power like they have for the past 100years then they better figure out when they have to make adjustments, especially when you are talking about the single largest domestic cash crop in the country and it is illegal.
this country is going broke and we can grow our way out of it. if we pull our heads out of our collective asses and get our act together we can be living in a sustainable country within our life times.

when this is all over, we have to push to get an amendment on the Constitution to make sure we never denigrate or bastardize mother nature again. our world is so fucked up right now because we have gotten so far away from a spiritual "connection" with the planet in the last 100 years. entheogens, it seems, are meant to keep the harmony between man and nature to help ensure our continued biological success as a race. I know it's cheesy but Avatar is right on.

I am encouraged to see so many positive comments on this issue. I am from Michigan, yes we now have legalized medical marijuana, voted by the PEOPLE (individuals like you and me). Yet some politicians, lawyers, doctors and others question its validity (we just didnt know what we where voting on) It is so true that BIG BUSINESS AND POLITICIANS BELIEVE THEY CONTROLL THIS COUNTRY AND "OUR LIVES" they would rather you take drugs like "MARINOL" please take the time to look it up, I think from the price ($370.00 for 28 pills) thats only 14 days and low dosage. Lets see hmmmm who is in who's pocket. Back to CBS whom I will never watch again ever. I reference a statement made by the president recently. WE (meaning us the people) spend to much time watching CABLE NEWS, we should be watching NBC CBS ABC, three more pockets to fill. I plan on making the upcomming elections (federal state and local) a priority. One Idea I am researching and hope to utilize, is to organize other like minded individuals, join forces, and purchace billboard space. I have contacted my local, state and federal officials to get a statement of position. It's time "WE THE PEOPLE" take controll and make our voices heard. We can think and speak for ourselves not told what we need or mean. Its time to be positive, active and make our voices heard, we are the people and can make a change.

Send those letters to your local CBS Radio/TV stations' contacts as well. (Yes, I know, it takes like 3 minutes of Google work but...) Many TV commercials are from local businesses. An established branch of CBS with its own local clients might care more about any potential boycott than the Big Guys. And the Big Guys will probably be persuaded more by a money making local station than a bunch of angry stoners. Also, it's less likely someone won't just delete the email.

I saw an ad on TV for the DVD of the movie The Hangover. The ad said to purchase the movie to watch on "national hangover day" (Jan. 1). So, it's ok to advertise that getting so drunk you get a hangover is normal... but not ok to advocate for more sensable drug laws. Weird.
Regarding the smoking and driving comments, marijuana affects your reaction time. You should not smoke and drive. You shouldn't take any drug (alocohol, precription, etc.) and drive. Wait til you get home to fire up the hooter or martini or beer or whatever.

I have friends that were speeding (racing) got in an accident and died (all the while...not high). I am sorry to hear for your loss. BUT, those that are familiar with MJ and THC know that you can drive just fine while high. Do not blame someones irrisponsibility behind the wheel on MJ. I have smoked for years...also while driving, working, actually pretty much while i do everything. Never been in an accident, never harmed anyone. Open your eyes. Some people just cant drive.

I know someone personally who lost his parents due to two drivers racing down a highway high on marijuana one of the drivers had her 2 year old in the back seat. The other driver hit my friends parents head on and killed them. In no way do I mean it should not be leagal, but to sit here and read post after post on how marijuana does no have an adverse effects on people is simply not true. Your under the influence of thc when you use it.

Oh here we go, another attempt made by mass media control to limit and cease the hope of any truth reaching an uneducated audience. Somehow, someway, some day maybe... but in the media today, proving fact over fiction I guess isn't profitable enough. And besides, who wants to take interest in something that can help others? Lets continue to "lullaby" the nation into the pockets of those with the big bucks! LOL!!!!

Hey Guys,
Just some quick suggestions for those in need.
The emails sent are great, it's great when people take a stand. For those considering writing.
Try to be concise and polite. I know that is hard under the circumstances but otherwise they label us a fringe.
Try to avoid name calling and hyperbole. Perhaps if you are from New Jersey you can reference the recent changes and if you are from a medical state you could mention that! You could mention that as an avid but soon to be ex-CBS viewer, you do not find the ad too political and even mention that in light of what California is considering, it seems a timely ad. And considering the state of the deficit it is something that just makes common sense.
The thing is, that most important, you are disappointed in their decision and you respectfully request that they reconsider. And if they refuse to reconsider you will be forced to take a stand and not only change your viewing habits (AKA Boycott CBS) but you will also boycott their biggest sponsors and advise them as to why.
Obviously this is something that you would express in your own words but run it through a spell check and also do a grammar check.
It does make a difference!
Stay Safe all. Jah Bless.
P.S. Thanks to those who researched the emails! Peace

TO: Paul Lagoon, you are so RIGHT, bro. And the sad thing about it is alcohol is killing our youth at a rate of 500k a year, all because politicians have got tons of money invested in that industry.

What we need to do is boycott CBS and let them know we are boycotting them in public, so everyone who agrees with "NORMAL", will actually have their voices heard.
We need to make this issue a national concern, and the only way to do that is to play "HARDBALL", with companies like CBS. Who the hell do they think they are, God?

We've been NICE for over 40 years, now it's time to get tough, now it's time to drive our point home with some good old fashion "BOYCOTTS". History has shown that boycotts do work and it's a very strong weapon, it's a proven fact, check the history books.

Paul Lagoon, I'm impressed with your ideals, we need more people like you on our team.

this was sent to both emails:
The decision to not approve the NORML ad's is utterly ridiculous!! I'm sure you have no problem excepting ad's for beer or tobacco, both of which KILL hundreds and thousands of people each year! It is a disgrace to this country that we are being restrained from promoting such a harmless and money producing crop. Marijuana has NEVER taken a single life, but it is considered the anti-christ.Oh and did i mention it NATURALLY grows in the ground?! You foolish people need to grow up and start actually listening to the facts and stop controlling the media so no messages can get across to all the brain washed fools. Go drink your beer and smoke your cigarettes, and get your cancer and liver disease, and while your at it kill some innocent motorist while you're driving drunk.. YOU AND THIS COUNTRY HAVE SOME SERIOUS ISSUES AND NEED TO GET YOUR PRIORITIES STRAIGHT!! HOLDING BACK THE TRUTH IS NOT DOING YOU ANY GOOD. I GUESS ADVERTISING SOMETHING THAT HAS KILLED MILLIONS OF PEOPLE IS BETTER TO YOU THAN ADVERTISING SOMETHING THAT HAS NOT KILLED A SINGLE PERSON.......EVER!!!!!!!!! GROW UP!!!

Kudo's to High Times for breaking this story! I think Matthew has a good idea and EVERYBODY who is appalled by this should write their own letter. If you currently watch CBS programming (even if it's just the local news) include that in your boycott as well.
I also think High Times should run with this and perhaps with Norml hold a protest in front of CBS.
I have noticed some changes for the positive recently from High Times and this is another positive step!
