News Hit - Iowa Board Ignores Drug Czar, Recommends Medical Pot

Wed, Feb 17, 2010 5:29 pm

Share |

• You may recall that back in November, the drug czar, Gil Kerlikowske, happened to surface in Iowa as the state’s pharmacy board was holding hearings on medical marijuana. Gil didn’t make an official drug czar recommendation to the board, however, he made sure to try and frighten Iowans out of any potential medical marijuana policy by invoking the abject misery in which Californians have lived since legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes.

Fortunately, Gil’s message didn’t register. Today the Iowa pharmacy board unanimously voted to recommend that marijuana be reclassified so that it could be prescribed to patients as medicine. Perhaps just as noteworthy, a recent Des Moines Register poll found that 64 percent of Iowans are in favor of medical cannabis. …More @ desmoinesregister.com

• The University of California’s Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research has been conducting state funded studies of marijuana as medicine for the past decade. Seriously. They’ve been around since 2000. Today, researchers announced the existence of scientific evidence supporting pot as an effective medication for treating conditions associated with HIV and MS. Because of “funding and legal issues” the study did not include the many other conditions that anecdotal evidence suggests marijuana is helpful in treating. …More @ mercurynews.com

• If an officer catches you with pot and it turns out you’re wanted by the sheriff’s department, explaining to cops that you were smoking to celebrate the end of your probation likely isn’t going to help. …More @ sheboyganpress.com

Im not sure what the point is of, bashing qwertybin...I AM BY NO MEANS SIDING With That Stupid Fuck....but the facts remain Obama lied to the American people, qwertybin may have no idea wtf "it" is talking about, more and more people are starting to disengage and stop believing the lies that we have all been fed for the last decade....all im saying is STOP THE FUCKING HATE! on both people and marijuana. I live in IA, we will probably never see the legalization front come to our state....but that does not mean I nor the people of IA r going to quit. All im asking for is a unified group of people who want the same thing, legalized marijuana for those who need it....no not ur thirteen yr old cuzin who is just starting, but for people like me who have and will be battling brain disorders the rest of their lives. The Hate is Driving Everyone Further Apart.....

Ahh, I see that the hag is still around, making trouble.

In case you guys didnt recognize, qwertybin is really Cindybin, a known internet troll, commonly referred to as the "Pot-Headhunter of the World Wide Web". (Do a Google search for 'Cindybin')
She's known for patrolling various pot site forums and blogs, trying to convince users to "correct their evil lifestyles". Her ludicrous, baseless drivel has sparked a ton of anger and flamewars, and shes been banned from many sites because of that.

Disregard everything she says. Shes been pulling this stunt for years. Back in '04 when I was a member of the now-defunct Marihemp.com Politics message board, she came on there and spewed the same garbage shes been doing here. The whole board went apeshit and the Admins banned her ass from there also.

"Olsen said he was pleased that legislators plan to put the issue before a new commission. "But I intend to continue to carry this big stick," he said of the lawsuit.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Iowa, which helped file the lawsuit, said last week that it probably would drop out of the legal fight in light of the pharmacy board's decision."

while Carl carries his big stick, I carry and smoke a joint daily while idol-worshipers blinded by Carl's Holy Smoke & Mirrors can suck his dick, and I DGAF.

Also not being reported, the ACLU lost 25% of their budget, they no longer gave money to pursure this now that the IBOPE have rules.

@ Rev green. Actually Carl issued a sage advisory that speaking openly in public about an individuals cannabis usage could potentially have negative consequences. Never told people not to testify. Some people even testified using face covering, didn't they? Again, why did the Board have to hold hearings in the first place? Please Rev. come lately, refresh us.

Ill be happy to answer your question kerouac420. Im here to set you guys on the proper course. And for that, you should be GLAD that Im here. Who else would be caring enough to talk sense to you and every other drug user here?

You guys may not realize it, but not only youre harming yourselves, but youre harming society with your abuse of drugs. Think about the poor old lady thats getting beaten and robbed for drug money, for every time you take that little illegal puff of that marijuana cigarette. All of the gangsterism and violent crimes tied in with drug abuse trickles all the way down to the casual pot smoker.

Feb 23 2010, 7:59 am

It amazes me just how ignorant people can be when it comes to cannabis.
For the people that are still on the "weed kills" bandwagon, let me ask you this.
What does more harm to society, cannabis or alcohol?
How about cannabis or tobacco?
How about cannabis or porn?
Here's a good one, cannabis or opiate addiction?
Many quote facts and figures from law enforcement as a basis in justifying the continuos persecution of cannabis users. The fact of the matter is, law enforcement and the courts are fighting to keep their cash flow coming in. Every time they bust someone, tickets and fines have to be paid. Cars and homes taken under the guise that they were purchased with drug proceeds.
The police, courts and rehab centers all have one thing in common. They all benefit from the laws being as they are. Once some one is busted they all get their turn to suck the "criminal" dry of all their money. The system is criminal, a system where by once you're in it, it costs thousands to get out.
Now if you want to talk about products that really harm society, we can.
Tobacco kills 1000's of people a year, thats pretty harmful, so lets make that illegal. Alcohol kills 1000's a year, women get raped while drunk, people kill when they drive on it, oh wow thats alot more harmful than cannabis, let's make that one illegal and make being caught with a can of beer punishable by 1 year in jail and a permanent record. It's been told that caffeine causes someone to feel more energetic, well we can't have that, from now on if you get caught with that you'll have to go to rehab and have to go and pee in a cup 2x a week for 3 years. By the way, it costs 45 dollars everytime you pee in a cup and if you have caffeine in your system, you're going back to jail you criminal.
We must let science decide on social harm, not social stigma. We must look past what we've been taught and look at the true facts.

Square actually has it right.
All of you law-breaking pot smokers who want proof as to the negative effects of pot use, go read the studies by ONDCP, and NIDA and see for yourself. Also, look at the statistics. For example, the statistics show that pot users earn less than 30% than non-users. The stats also show an alarmingly high workplace absenteeism rate among pot users. Decreased productivity? You bet.

The statistics also show a high workplace accident rate among pot users as well. And because of this and many other reasons, workplace drug testing has been implemented, which is one of the greatest concepts to ever occur in modern times. People on the job who live clean, correct lives have a right to a safe work enviorment and shouldnt have to worry about a bunch of drugged up fools who cause accidents and being absent, which makes other workers have to shoulder that load for them.

As I said, read the studies and check out the statistics and see it for yourselves. But then again you wont do it, courtesy of the Amotivational Syndrome thats brought on by pot use.

Pot having medical value? Who the hell are you kidding?

Its been established that pot has no medical usefulness. Its a dangerous drug that leads to more dangerous drug use, and destroys lives and minds. "Medical marijuana" is just a big excuse for the burned-out zombies to attempt to extend their drug habit legally.

I find it appalling that Iowa is trying to legalize pot. What the hell these guys are thinking? You can expect huge increases in health care costs due to the influx of addiction-related illnesses. Productivity will certainly plummet, since most potheads are too lazy and smoked-out to get up off the couch and go to work.

Hpoefully, pot will never get legalized there and if for some idiotic reason it does, I hope the Feds will cutoff all state funding until the state is forced to repeal.

I have lived in Iowa all of my life (and still do) and it's good to finally hear the terrific news. All of my friends smoke pot and so do I. Parents need to get over the fact that their kid's smoke pot. They did it when they were younger anyway. Unfortunately Iowa is a fairly conservative state and I don't think it will ever be legalized. The fight for legalization of marijuana EVERYWHERE in the United States needs to not just go to the small time governors and mayors of states and towns. It needs to go to senators and people of higher ranking in the government to actually even make a dent. I honestly don't think people realize how much legalizing marijuana could do for this country. Not only can I smoke my weed freely without everyone's buttholes getting tight; it would also create more jobs, help get this country out of debt, and help people with serious illnesses get better. If people opposing marijuana think it's so bad, why don't they just smoke one single joint then the next day ask them if it was terrible smoking that joint. I'm pretty sure they'd love it. Anyway, I love weed. You love weed. Everyone loves weed. Fuckin' legalize it already. It's not hurting anyone...like alcohol.

It is an amazing step forward. Why is OUR government so hell-bent on keeping this medicine illegal? Many reasons. Old stigmas, racist ones i might add. The fact that pharmaceutical corporations will loose trillions of dollars, these corporations pay our gov officials to keep it illegal. Drug Recognition Experts is going to be an entire new law enforcement department and all cops would love to get the promotion to be able to have the power to go after anyone just because all of the sudden they are "Experts"
this issue must be acknowledged by the community at large.
The new cops with two weeks of training can now detain you and draw your blood and you don't have to be guilty of anything, this is wrong.

D.R.E.

Feb 18 2010, 7:34 pm

Drug Recognition Experts are regular cops wearing lab coats masquerading as scientists, and this is the latest against your civil rights and your human rights, after receiving two weeks of training these guys can spot a person under the influence, without any evidence and they can draw your blood against your will, that is right now the police is going to certify their own experts, to go after people they know have medical cannabis recommendations.
soon they will have that guy from the tv show "Lie to Me"
certifying them to spot a liar among the crowd.

I have a story, a story about medicinal marijuana. My journey with Parkinson's began about 7 years ago. It started with little things, a twitching finger, tingling electric pulses all over. As time went on the symptoms increased and the standard pills they give you began to take their toll. Then we had a vote in the state where I live, a vote that changed my life. My state legalized marijuana by an overwhelming majority. I breathed a breath of relief when the final vote tally was in. For once in many years I had hope.
It was tough finding a doctor who was sympathetic, a doctor who could get past the social stigma and do whats right for the patient. By gods grace I was able to find one. Not just a doctor that I would just see one time but a doctor who was concerned with my well being.
Sure, I still have symptoms but they are far less intense now. I no longer have to pop a pill every four hours. I am sleeping regular for the first time in years. All of my blood work lately has been excellent, with no signs of kidney or liver trouble.
I come from a christian family, that is very anti drug. My family has seen the difference in my activity level. They've noticed the positive effect medical marijuana has had on my life and those around me. They now support my desire for a normal life through the use of my medicine.
I feel joy in knowing that soon patients in Iowa will no longer have to suffer. That soon there will be another option.
