Should Colorado Tax Medical Marijuana?

Fri, Feb 26, 2010 6:11 pm

Share |

A Colorado state senator wants medical marijuana to be taxed. If lawmakers OK the amendment to the medical marijuana bill that regulates dispensaries, it would be put to a public vote. State Senator Chris Romer believes the tax could generate between $10 and $15 million a year.

Many advocates have asked for marijuana to be taxed and regulated, citing cannabis as an untapped source of billions of dollars in revenue and legalization as a means to boost the struggling economy. However, Romer’s proposal has “received a cautious reception from medical-marijuana advocates.” This could be due to Romer’s assertion that Colorado’s medical marijuana program could lead to an increase in recreational use as well as his desire to use some of the resulting tax revenue for substance abuse treatment centers.

A similar tax was approved in the city of Oakland, California last July. Roughly 80% of Oakland voters were in favor of a medical marijuana tax that officials estimated would generate $1 million a year.

I am on MMJ in Co. but the price is so high I can't afford it.
Co. needs to help control the price. My caregiver can grow 6 plants for me. 6 plants will produce about 9 pounds a year. But no one can smoke that much if they are using it for medical use only. One person can use about 3 to 4 pounds a year. So why do they charge us so much. These dispensaries are making a killing on us. That is not right. I thought that they were there to help us, not put us in the poor house. I pay taxes on everything because our government controls everything so why can't they control the prices on MMJ and make it more affordable. Some of us really do need MMj for our medical problems.
The state governments need to stop the dispensaries from becoming millionaire over night. So I am asking the government in all states that has MMJ laws to step in and HELP MMJ patients.

if they tax it, they open the door for the illegal distribution of the bud all over that state.. keep the prices low or the drug dealers will

Mar 8 2010, 8:33 pm

They HAVE to tax it! Anything sold is subject to tax, as our tax code is written. Our DA (DAN MAY) said today-when prosecuting drug cases, they'll charge them with a tax code violation (felony usually) as well, because even though there was criminal intent and what was sold was illegal, it was still subject to tax. I don't know how successful he is at having the charge stick, but it's interesting-the fucks actually use that against us, and he stood there and said that using the same practice would legitimize mmj even more, and he would advise against it. Ridiculous.

Come on Florida! WE CAN DO IT! Get it on the ballot! Go to www.pufmm.org and lets get medical marijuana legal in Florida. It will never happen unless we all pitch in. We need about 700,000 signatures. Not many people know about this so we need to all pitch in and get on the ball with this. In the event that we can't get all the signatures in time they are good for 4 years so we will still have a chance in 2012. Lets not wait that long lets get this done now!

all legal things are taxed by the federal government. We are in a reccession so we could sure use lose taxes for important funding or i guess the war. Politicians do what they want. But taxation by the federal government is the ultimate realization by the government that weed is a legal product. The feds are considering this sense they already spend billions of dollars to control illegal drugs to begin with. If weed is legalized then growing can be legalized as well. This means when it is legal everything else will become legal like seeds...

Killer Clown

Mar 4 2010, 1:15 am

I don't know. I tend to think making marijuana legal might be worse because then the Fed and state can up the price to whatever they want. Maybe having marijuana decriminalized would be the better way to go so it remains affordable, then again maybe not. I guess if you could grow your own (which I would do) then you could bypass the federal and state taxes.

We should be glad they are going to tax our weed. If the states are able to gain from this, then it will only help out cause.

I would rather pay 65 dollars and have some of it go back into our communities then pay 45 dollars and have all of it go to the mexcian cartels.

But is our big brother ever going to see tax it, produce it like a cash crop. keep the money spent on it here in the U.S.. I could write about this subject til I was blue in the face. But the bible even says that all seed bearin plants and herbs are here for use. I dream that are government will wake up some day. I am a felon because of possession it should not be this way. AND IT REALLY PISSES A LOT OF GOOD GOD FEARING PEOPLE OFF!!!!!

I THINK THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS BEEN OUTED ONE TOO MANY TIMES FOR THIS TO GO ON ANY LONGER.

THE STATES BEING WHAT THEY ARE HAVE LET THE PEOPLE HAVE THEIR WAY., "sort of" AND NOW THE GREEDY POLITICIANS AND THE LAWMAKERS HAVE SMELLED MORE OF "OUR MONEY" AND MORE POWER TO HOLD THE PEOPLE IN A SUBMISSIVE CHECKMATE OF SORTS. IT JUST WILL NOT STAND THE TEST OF LOGIC ANYMORE.
WELL?? THE STATE OF OUR EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM MAY KEEP US IN THE SLAVE WAGE EARNER BRACKET FOR A MUCH LONGER PERIOD THAN PREVIOUSLY THOUGHT POSSIBLE!!!!

IF WE THE PEOPLE DO NOT GET UP OFF OUR COLLECTIVE LAZY STONER ASSES AND DO SOME VERY TOUGH AND UNPLEASNAT THINGS LIKE WORK REALLY HARD ALL DAY ORGANIZING AND BUCKLE DOWN WE ARE SCREWED!!!

HAS ANYONE READ THE BILL?
DO ANY ONE OF YOU HERE IN HIGH TIMES CYBER LAND KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO THE RIGHTS OF PEOPLE TO OBTAIN HERBAL MEDICINES ALONG WITH OUR MARIJUANA?

DID YOU KNOW THAT THE MAJORITY RULES HAVE ALL BUT BEEN SUSPENDED AND THE BILL IS LIKELY TO PASS ANYWAYS!!!

THEY CALL IT RECONCILIATION!!!!!

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT THEY THINK THEY ARE RECONCILING TO BEGIN WITH!!!!

I BET IT HAS TO DO WITH HOW LITTLE THE LAW MAKERS WILL HAVE TO PAY FOR THEIR FREE RIDES INTO RETIREMENT.,THAT IS ALL IT IS ABOUT.
HOW DO WE KEEP THE PEOPLE SUBMISSIVE AND COMPLIANT WHILE "DOING IT" TO THEM.,/"stripping freedoms and liberties and rights from the people" AGAIN?

WHEN DOES IT END?

HYPER INFLATION AND UNPAID PENSIONS AND STATE PAYROLLS AND WORKERS STRIKES ARE COMING TO A NEIGHBORHOOD NEAR YOU SOON!

All this uproar, over something that will be a non-issue, within 3 months of marijuana legalization. When it is legalized, you will have to hunt hard to find a "medical marijuana" dispensary. Who would pay that much for marijuana when the "commercial" marijuana, although it might take two joints instead of one, will do the job,at a much more reasonable price.

is it really so bad to tax medical marijuana? I say no, we should just be thankful it's legal at all. The state of Colorado is simply taking an oppurtunity to earn revenue on a new frontier. I say it's the least we could do is to pay a tax. Will it really kill us? And who knows, it might bring in some positive light on a society generally frowned upon, even with today's new laws. I would have no problem paying the Medical Marijuana if i chose to live in Colorado. (i would think of it as a "thank you" if you will)

I guess its okay when the goverment deals the drugs. Stay out of my stash unclesam, I dont support your terrorism.

what

Mar 1 2010, 2:28 am

what the hell is the gov waiting for it would pull this economy back together ,, if 10% of the country is out of work i bet this would get people back to work ! think advertising, marketing,,, how many jobs are in alchohl and tobacco world wide? if the gov would let us do our thing we could all profit , all the money generated would top off the economy bothered

Mar 1 2010, 1:53 am
as soon as it is legal it would be mass produced like tabacco and everyone in the US could become pot farmers,, all of the world for that matter ,it would create millions and millions of jobs overnight bothered

Mar 1 2010, 1:45 am
every pot head could apply and be hired, you know it would make your resume look better to me bothered

Mar 1 2010, 1:40 am
by the way if and when its legal it would create more jobs than it takes away just remember all the pot heads in prison and when they get out they'll need jobs too ,, it would be a hell of a way to save social security! bothered

Mar 1 2010, 1:29 am
its a DEA form 222 that makes controlled drugs legal to dispense ,, this is a federal loop hole bothered

Mar 1 2010, 1:19 am
you cant make my rx illegal from one state to another bothered

Mar 1 2010, 1:14 am
if i have an rx for weed i should be able to light up and toke it up in any designated smoking area anywhere and if im arrested for it my civil rights have just been violated i should also be able to transport my rx anywhere i see fit!otherwise i would be confined to the states where it is legal, this a form of incarceration jay

Mar 1 2010, 1:06 am
that isnt fucked up. its only legal in certain states...its not like medical marijuana is legalized through a federal law bothered

Feb 28 2010, 11:30 pm
if i took my percacet rx and my weed rx from cali to georgia on and airplaine i could be busted in the atlanta airport for weed how fucked up is that

I agree with most that we claim that we want to help the state by letting them tax our meds just like ciggs and beer.
We need to tread lightly here because if we let them control our medicine we will be right back where we started. I don't want the FEDS growing and distributing my meds! They already allow enough FDA approved poisons to kill us 10 times over. If we want to maintain quality meds, we can't let the Government control that aspect of this. I can guarantee when it is all said and done, everything we will be made synthetic. Any medication that is synthetically derived is nothing but poison to our systems.

YES, should. why would u say no? people at the clubs in California and Colorado should control the prices better, its way to much money for the average hard working toker. it cant be supply and demand. people on the streets are giveng way better prices. its gitting out of control, they use to say the prices are just as high or higher(then street value) so people dont resale. cannabis is getting more legal and prices are going higher, when, it should go the other way.BULL SHIT ... clones should be way cheaper also, as well as seeds... put a plant in every yard, so no one will need to steal... STOP STEALING PEOPLES WEED..(thats to you thieves. why the fuck people cant grow hemp? thats fucking stupid, plant been a mane crop for our founding fathers and here in 2010 were in this shit? wtf? the people need to take back this shit! if your a DEA, say "NO,i will not break down this door, because grandma and grampa are toking and growing!" and if your co-worker will go do it? beat his ass! stand up to your boss! you know in your hart cannabis dose not and will not harm anybody, in fact, it makes people harmless! wake up! stand up!

I don't think we can hipocritical of the issue. We claim marijuana can create all this money for the states, and we base this claim to try to get more legalization bills pushed through. Lets put our money where our mouth is and back up our claims. If we make these medical marijuana states alot of money, people will see a larger benifit in full legalization. Full legalization should be the main goal.

I'm not a medical patient or a Colorado resident. But as an outsider, I'd consider it a good thing any time a government decides to make money off of marijuana sales or production. There are few better ways to entrench an industry than turning it into a source of government revenue.
