Former Madam Running for NY Governor on Pro-Pot Platform
Thu, Mar 04, 2010 6:35 pm
Will New York elect a pro-pot, pro-prostitution governor? Kristin Davis thinks so – and, no, she’s not joking. Davis is best known as the “Manhattan Madam” who made headlines back in 2008 as the owner of the brothel frequented by former governor Eliot Spitzer. This week she announced her intention to run for governor in New York.
Davis, who considers herself a “Libertarian/Republican,” believes that “personal freedom is the key to New York’s economic future.” She supports the legalization, regulation, and taxation of marijuana and prostitution and believes that legalizing has the potential to flood the cash-strapped state with an “estimated $2.5 billion in new revenues.”
"I haven't seen any studies proving marijuana is a gateway drug, and I know many New Yorkers who would happily pay an excise tax on it … We need to increase revenue in the state. All career politicians do is raise taxes and cut services,” Davis said.
A strong supporter of legalizing gay marriage, Davis says she wants “to be a force for reform.” This includes highlighting the inequities of a “criminal justice system which discriminates against women, poor people and minorities.”
Davis will represent the Personal Freedom Party provided that she can collect the necessary signatures to place the party on the ballot.
Her announcement to enter the gubernatorial race coincides with current New York Gov. David Patterson’s decision not seek reelection in the wake of back-to-back scandals. Patterson was originally accused of inappropriate intervention in an assault case involving one of his top aides. Most recently the state ethics commission accused Patterson of accepting an unlawful gift.

Hey I am currently living in FL as well, when is the deadline for signing up for the med marijuana ballot? I bet you could get a whole lot of signatures on the FL university campuses, I would suggest UF, FSU, USF, UCF, Miami, FAMU and all of the smaller colleges around the state. I bet Key West would be good as well. Also, I would imagine the spring break Florida hot spots would be a gold mine as well.

Teens' alcohol, pot use increases

WASHINGTON — Alcohol and marijuana use among teens is rising after a decade-long decline, a study being released today found.
"I'm a little worried that we may be seeing the leading edge of a trend," said Sean Clarkin, director of strategy at the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, which was releasing the study. "Historically, you do see the increase in recreational drugs before you see increases in some of the harder drugs."
The survey found the number of teens in Grades 9 through 12 who reported drinking alcohol in the last month rose 11 percent last year, with 39 percent — about 6.5 million teens — reporting alcohol use. That's up from 35 percent, or about 5.8 million teens, in 2008.
For pot, 25 percent of teens reported smoking marijuana in the last month, up from 19 percent.
Until last year, those measures for pot and alcohol use had been on a steady decline since 1998, when use hovered around 50 percent of teens for alcohol and 27 percent for pot.
