A new study conducted by researchers at the University of New Hampshire says that life circumstances – such as economic hardships, stress and unemployment – are a more likely “gateway” to harder drugs than marijuana.

The findings are based on data collected from 1,286 young adults from Florida public schools.

According to lead researcher Dr. Karen Van Gundy, “There seems to be this idea that we can prevent later drug problems by making sure kids never smoke pot … But whether marijuana smokers go on to use other illicit drugs depends more on social factors … not so much whether they smoked a joint in the eight grade.”

Pot is defiantly not a gateway drug. I agree it depends on social and financial status. But well numerous people blame pot for being a gate way drug, no one asks what the gateway to pot was. Most everyone I know who smokes pot also smokes cigarettes and and did so before smoking pot. In fact even the ones who no longer smoke cigarettes, did smoke them before they found pot. So even if pot did lead to trying other things, which I don't believe, technically, cigarettes led you to pot. So what is the real gateway drug. Yet cigarettes while proven time and time again are very hazardous to your health, they are legal. There has never been a case of cancer caused by pot that I know of. But there are people getting cancer from cigarettes daily. I say legalize pot and ban cigarettes. The world would be a better place!

The "gateway theory" is so silly. Of course marijuana is one of a series of steps that can lead to hard drug use. beginning with simple behaviors of disobedience as a toddler, to dealing with authority at school, cigarettes, booze, etc... But there is nothing in MJ that causes anyone to seek harder drugs except when it's found to be totally safe. then someone might think that other drugs are ok too.
There in "lies" the problem. Marijuana is not a drug. It is an herb with tremendous medicinal and recreational value. Now if the Pharmaceutical Company start fucking with our beautiful plant then it will become a drug with side effects and all.
