Scotts Miracle-Gro Targets Medical Pot Growers
Tue, Jun 14, 2011 5:09 pm
Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, which manufactures products for lawn and garden care, is looking for a new industry to help increase sales. So it seems logical that Scotts would like a piece of the medical marijuana industry, which an information data services company claims will reach $1.7 billion in sales this year.
According to Scotts Chief Executive Jim Hagedorn, “I want to target the pot market … There’s no good reason we haven’t.”
Medical marijuana is a thriving industry at the moment and is capable of producing a bump in sales for the lawn care giant.
HIGH TIMES Senior Cultivation Editor Danny Danko believes growers are better off supporting their local grow shops and getting a trustworthy grow medium.
“I’m not a big fan of Miracle-Gro soil products for cannabis cultivation or otherwise,” said Danko. “The mixes typically contain time-release nutrients meant for ornamental flowers more so than consumables such as vegetables and fruits. The nutrients already mixed into the soil can also be too ‘hot’ for young plants, meaning they’re overfertilized and show signs of nutrient burn.
“Their (Miracle-Gro’s) ‘organic’ mix contains composted bark, sphagnum peat moss and pasteurized poultry litter, which isn’t really my preferred way to get nitrogen to my plants. On top of that, some Miracle-Gro products may contain metals such as lead, copper and zinc as well as arsenic. Some growers have reported fungus gnats coming from new bags.”
Danko added that, “it remains to be seen how Miracle-Gro handles a soil mix specifically targeted for medical cannabis growers.”
According to The Wall Street Journal, Scotts Miracle-Gro could end up acquiring pre-existing dirt companies instead of creating its own specifically branded products.

Politics are more like professional sports, who ever can raise the most money wins almost every time.
Each politician should be limited to X amount of money. The amount of money the position payed might be a place to start. Why would it be logical to pay more for a position then it can pay. It is obvious your intentions are no good if you pay to have a job. You must be planning to use the position for other reasons.

You think if citizens of this country wake up to the fact that the government engineered crack and put it into our ghetto's so the poor could be taken advantage of more? You think if we find our that our government recruited all the top Nazi scientists, and top ranking officials to continue there work on the American people making genetically modified organisms and they get caught with Nazi bases in America and around the world we should stay silent and let them continue? You believe that if we the people found out about 9/11 and how it was done by our own government
We should be kicked out of this country for getting mad and wanting to change and burn the Babylon system down

Miracle grow does the math and realizes there is already a huge competitor base in this market with names that are established and they are going to try and get in on it.
What do they know that we do not? THE MARKET WOULD NEED TO BE MUCH BIGGER AND WOULD NEED A BUNCH OF NEW GROWERS FOR THEM TO MAKE MONEY. I don't think current growers would switch from their current products to use a miracle grow product. Old timers are set in their ways and only new growers would use miracle grow.

I kind of wonder though, considering Danny's comments, is if Miracle-Gro/Scott's/Monsatan has an ulterior motive other than grabbing a piece of the market. Perhaps adding poisons to the fertilizer to make cannabis toxic so consumers get sick or die and the prohibitionists can say "I told you so"?

Better to support the local grow shop and get a grow medium you can trust. Home Depot, Walmart and all these other conglomerates and petrochemical interests are part of what's wrong with the world. They don't support us - why do we support them?
