Cops Get Canned For Supporting Drug Law Reform
Tue, Dec 06, 2011 6:12 pm
The War on Drugs has created an inherent “us against them” mentality in many marijuana smokers. While the vast majority of cannabis consumers are otherwise law-abiding citizens – many of whom appreciate the efforts of law enforcement (when the law being enforced isn’t marijuana-related) – there is still a great deal of distrust involved. The prevailing sense that sides have been chosen and lines cannot be crossed is understandable given this country’s cannabis prohibition. However, it is not terribly helpful in attempting to affect change.
Interestingly, a microcosm of this dynamic can be found within the law enforcement side of the equation alone. An article published in The New York Times late last week highlighted several cases of officers voicing their desire to see marijuana legalized or decriminalized and paying severe consequences.
The optimistic takeaway here is clearly that non-violent, peaceful marijuana smokers benefit when officers with a frontline view of the drug war formulate their own opinions and decide marijuana prohibition is an utter failure. However, it is disappointing to say the least to learn that various law enforcement agencies will not tolerate the thoughts or beliefs of individual officers when they fall outside the government’s anti-pot dogma.
In one such case Bryan Gonzalez, a former Border Patrol agent, mentioned in passing to a fellow agent that legalizing marijuana would likely end drug-related violence in Mexico. Gonzalez also expressed sympathy for illegal immigrants. Not long afterwards he received a letter of termination stating Gonzalez held “personal views that were contrary to core characteristics of Border Patrol Agents, which are patriotism, dedication and sprit de corps.”
Gonzalez was aware of LEAP (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition) at the time of his off the cuff remarks. LEAP is an organization made up of former and active law enforcement officers determined to end America’s War on Drugs.
Unfortunately, many active law enforcement officers who happen to agree with LEAP’s mission are wary of openly throwing their support behind the group. And with good reason. Take for instance Joe Miller, a former probation officer in Arizona. Mr. Miller was fired after simply adding his name to a letter from LEAP calling for marijuana decriminalization. When Miller added his name to the letter, he also included his agency. While this was merely for “identification purposes,” according to Miller’s attorney, Miller’s bosses saw it as a misleading action meant to appear as if he was speaking for the entire probation department.
Miller has since filed suit in Federal District Court and is being aided by the American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona. Gonzalez, the Border Patrol agent who was canned via letter, also filed suit in federal court in Texas.
With such backlash resulting from expressing a dissenting opinion, LEAP has a difficult time garnering the support of active officers. According to LEAP’s executive director Neill Franklin, “No on wants to be fired and have to fight for their job in court … So most officers are reluctant to sign on board. But we do have some brave souls.”
The fear of potential consequences for speaking out is powerful indeed. Franklin noted the case of an officer in Maryland who is sympathetic to LEAP’s mission but won’t join the group until he leaves the force. “He wants to have a good last couple of months, without any hassle.”
Jonathan Wender is one of the lucky officers standing up for drug reform while on the job. Wender was a police sergeant in Washington State who was fired for supporting marijuana decriminalization. However, Wender managed to win a settlement of $815,000 and was even given his old job back. Perhaps disillusioned by the fight that ensued after speaking his mind, Wender instead decided to retire and now teaches a course in “Drugs and Society” at the University of Washington.
LEAP is a unique organization fighting against prohibition. Not only does the group help blur the line between marijuana users and law enforcement but it also acts as a recovery program of sorts (this is the opinion of the author, not the official stance of the organization), providing officers a community of likeminded individuals who have all experienced America’s War on Drugs from the vantage point of enforcement. It is disturbing that open-mindedness regarding marijuana is not tolerated in many law enforcement agencies, yet that makes an organization like LEAP all the more crucial.

Legalize it now, so we can move on to more important issues. Like "terrisum", starvation, over population.
We have more important matters to address than a bunch of people who "WANT" to smoke pot.

i don't see a strong legalization/decrim bill going through money hungry congress this year, if anything surprising happens it would be around the glass steagall act or corporate personhood - but the money doesn't back either of these this year, either
and a congress with balls during an election year? never happens. Look how the dems were such pansies in 2009 when they actually had the majority: house, senate, and exec branch.

Number of Congressmen 100
Number needed to change 75 (3/4 no veto)
As a couple of people like Ron and Rand Paul and Barney Frank are already in the figure is more like 70.
So 70 Assholes are wreaking it for the 100,000,000 Marijuana smokers and are responsible for 1,000,000 annual arrests.
Who votes for these guys? Vote a straight Marijuana ticket and let's get er done. Check out sowhempeverywhere.wordpress.com for our likes and dislikes.
Lamar Smith from Texas must be voted out, he blocks all pro marijuana legislation. In this case one man one vote is one man.

The fire department you speak of is volunteer and charges $75.00 a year for fire protection. That money buys the insurance the firemen get in case they are injured or the truck is damaged. If you didn't buy the coverage you failed to provide them the protection they need to put out the fire.
The people next to the house that burned had coverage and the Fire Dept. stayed and kept their house protected from collateral damage.
THIS PERSON FAILED TO PAY FOR COVERAGE, THEY CHOSE NOT TO BUY INSURANCE.
So don't blame the firemen, nobody wants to buy milk if they can get it through the fence for free. Then the cow goes dry and their house burns down.

Unbelievable that a fire fighting team would stand around and watch someones place burn to the ground cause they didn't pay for fire fighting service.
SO we pay, or they don't spray..
Sickening.

I would suggest the gun is only used if the ballot box fails. Like the catholic church which takes on aspects of the religions it replaces as required to survive. Things like Christmas in December to keep the Druids happy to the placement of other traditions and holidays, the actual meanings are changed of course.
The yule log used to represent the end of the old year and was burned as a symbolic out with the old in with the new which was represented by a decorated tree. Sound Familiar? The biggest parts of the holiday were retained. Party with friends, exchange gifts, have a fire and decorate a tree. Only one real change, change the purpose of the celebration. Within a few generations the old meaning is forgotten and Wala! The old holiday becomes the birthday of the son of God instead of the celebration of seasonal change.
This is the same as the democracy does, you get to keep your traditions within the frame work of a new meaning that has a different purpose. You can pretend to understand politics. You can cheer for your favorite candidate. You can attend your favorite rallies. You can step into the Ballot Box and flip your lever. You can pretend you participated in a free election. You can pretend your voice was heard.
In the end the corporations that are against Marijuana for selfish reasons will spend millions on lobbyists and lawyers, who will buy representatives to change the results of the Ballots.
These assassins of justice, use back door men to find ways around the true legal vote of the people. While we discuss Marijuana it could be anything, all types of votes are changed everyday, we just don't pay attention.
The EPA is weakened everyday as corporations lie and sue for "Their rights" as "People" to poison you; as banks lie and sue for their "Rights" "As People" to cheat you out of money. All with the help of "Your Representatives".
As long as we allow it to continue it will. The OWS movement needs to transform into a political party and take control of the government in 2012. Then we can make the changes from Within.
Ron Paul can be their candidate for President as an independent, which he should be anyway.

Father Keller spoke about how certain people in our government want to put out candles rather than light them, further he told of how certain people in government look at us not as human beings but nothing more than chemicals worth $1.89. Those certain people I am being more and more convinced are prohibs.,
What about our unalienable rights?
Aliens indeed. Thats what we are to the hateful heathens that want nothing but trouble for our kind, as they don't believe in the love of God, or God for that matter., all they believe in is their money, tradition and war.

HAve you ever wondered why it is that it isn't very popular to hear of anyone on a church show tell of a positive experience with weed?
That is proof of the lack of freedom of speech, unless there are shows positive, and i just never heard them..
Surely people out there find positive effects on weed in there day to day lives, so why is it that those role models are not heard of on the radio? Are they prevented from speaking on the radio about the benefits of Cannabis in their lives? If not, why not?
Could it be that separation of church and state is in reality separating us from society, thus the silly name calling of ufos, and aliens and silly stupid names like that?
What if it is that a stoner has a positive message for a church?
What of the stoner's rights as a human being?
Who is it responsible for prohibition of speech on the positive, is it tradition of worshiping being mean to others? Repress unto other the norm? After all God and Church are supposed to be about positivity, not dwell on and center all attention on dis-eased mental people as if that is the norm, when that thinking could very well bring about a norm of unhappy schizoids afraid of their shadows.

"IF YOU ARE AGAINST US..,"
SOMETHING ABOUT THE WAR ON TERRORISTS AND BLAH BLAH BLAH..,
IT WAS BUSH NUMBER TWO.
IF YOU REMEMBER THE SPEECH HE GAVE THE NATION AFTER 9/11
DISSENT IS TREASON.
THAT IS ALL YOU NEED TO REMEMBER.,
ANY AMOUNT OF DISSENT IS TREASON TO THESE PEOPLE IN POWER TODAY.
IF YOU SPEAK AGAINST THE ESTABLISHMENT YOU ARE EITHER POLITICALLY DESTROYED OR REMOVED FROM YOUR JOB.
IF YOU ARE DEEMED A DISSENTOR OR A "TERRORIST" WHICH IS JUST ANOTHER WORD FOR A THREAT TO THE GOVERNMENT AND THE CENTRAL BANKERS POWER.
THEY WILL CERTAINLY EVENTUALLY IMPRISON OR KILL YOU OR MAKE WAR ON YOUR COUNTRY.
DISSENT IS TREASON.
THE MILITARY AND THE POLICE ARE THE ONLY THINGS STANDING BETWEEN US AND FREEDOM AND LIBERTY.
THE POWERS THE GOVERNMENT HAS SURROUNDED ITSELF WITH ARE OURS AND WE MUST TAKE THEM TO TASK WITH THE TRUTH AND OUR GREAT NUMBERS WITH MORE OCCUPY LIKE MOVEMENTS AND PROTESTS TO SPREAD THE TRUTH TO THE MEN WITH GUNS.
THE GOVERNMENT IS WHO AND WHAT EVER THE MEN WITH THE MOST GUNS DECIDES IT IS.
